Two New Species Of Digenea From The Spot, Leiostomus Xanthurus Lacépède, From The Gulf Of Mexico, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Two new species of Digenea are described from the euryhaline fish, Leiostomus xanthurus, from near Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The first, Apocreadium manteri, is most like A. uroproctoferum Sogandares-Bernal, 1959, from which it differs by having multispined scales and larger eggs and not possessing a uroproct. The second, Lecithaster leiostomi, is most like L. gibbosus (Rudolphi, 1802) from which it differs primarily by having a more elongated seminal vesicle and stockier vitelline lobes. Lecithaster musteli Srivastava, 1966, is considered a synonym of L. confusus Odhner, 1905.

Increase In Size Of Eimeria Separata Oocysts During Patency, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Examinations of 18 consecutive fecal samples collected at 6-hr intervals from infected rats showed that oocysts increased in length and width by approximately 40% from the beginning to the end of the patent period. Unsporulated oocysts were first observed in the 3rd fecal collection, 84 to 90 hr post-inoculation (PI) and 100 of these measured 9.9 to 14.3 by 8.8 to 12.1 μ (mean 11.7 by 10.1). Patency ended with the 15th fecal collection, 156 to 162 hr PI, and 100 unsporulated oocysts from this sample measured 14.3 to 17.6 by 13.2 to 15.4 μ (mean 16.3 by 14.2). Despite …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

The monorchiid trematode Lasiotocus trachinoti sp. n. is described from the intestine and the pyloric ceca of young Trachinotus carolinus. It is most like L. mulliof Bartoli and Prévot, 1966, but differs from it primarily by being smaller and having cirrus spines more evenly dispersed.

The Effect Of The Parasite Hymenolepis Diminuta On Iodine Economy In The Rat, David Gourdon Holmes Aug 1970

The Effect Of The Parasite Hymenolepis Diminuta On Iodine Economy In The Rat, David Gourdon Holmes

Theses and Dissertations

A balance of iodine within the rats is important for the maintenance of normal thyroid function. Because of Hymenolepis d[imi]nuta's affinity for certain nutrients, it may upset norma[l] iodine balance in the rat. To determine this, tapeworm-infected and non-infected rats were given 125Iodide orally and the percent uptake of iodide by the thyroid and the amount of radioac[tiv]ity in the tapeworms was determined. The percent distribution of the radio-iodinated compounds in the thyroid, tapeworms and feces was also determined. These procedures were repeated except 125Thyroxine was administered orally. There was a decrease in percent iod[id]e uptake by thyroids of tapeworm-infected …

A Syncoeliid (Hemiuroidea Faust, 1929) Metacercaria On A Copepod From The Atlantic Equatorial Current, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

The complete life cycle for a species of Syncoeliidae Odhner, 1927, is unknown. Adults are known from the branchial cavity and mouth of marine fishes which are usually found offshore, and second intermediate hosts have been reported. Sars (1885, Challenger Rept. Zool. 13: 228 p.) described the metacercaria of Syncoelium filiferum from the perivisceral cavity of the euphausiids Nematoscelis megalops Sars, 1883, and Thysanoessa gregaria Sars, 1883, in the South Atlantic. DoIlfus (1966, Bull. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat. Ser. 2 38: 195-200) described Metacercaria (Gen. ?) theomonodi from some poorly preserved material amidst a collection of "copepods and chaetognaths" collected …

Infectivity And Development Of Trichinella Spiralis In Germ-Free, Monocontaminated And Conventional Mice, Daulat Sitanggang Aug 1970

Infectivity And Development Of Trichinella Spiralis In Germ-Free, Monocontaminated And Conventional Mice, Daulat Sitanggang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of the experiment was to compare the development of Trichinella spiralis in germ-free, Lactobacillus casei monocontaminated, Escherichia coli monocontaminated and conventional mice. The criteria used in the experiments were the recovery of adults and larvae of T. spiralis after 72 hours and one month post-infection, respectively. which gave an indication of the effects of no bacteria or only a certain, single species of bacterium on the development of this nematode in mice.

Germ-free T. spiralis larvae were obtained by washing them several times with sterile normal saline, and treatment with antibiotics. The gavaging procedure was done without anesthetization …

Bibliography Of Diseases And Parasites Of Marine Fish And Shellfish (With Emphasis On Commercially Important Species), Carl J. Sindermann Jun 1970

Bibliography Of Diseases And Parasites Of Marine Fish And Shellfish (With Emphasis On Commercially Important Species), Carl J. Sindermann

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

The literature on diseases and parasites of marine animals has been accumulating at an accelerating rate in recent decades, and at a seemingly geometrical rate in the past few years. Reviews of selected aspects of the subject have appeared (Cheng, 1967; Sindermann, 1966; Sindermann and Rosenfield, 1967). References listed in these papers include a significant, but still a small part, of the available literature. With the proliferation of journals in many languages throughout the world, a complete bibliography, even in a narrow area of research, is almost an impossibility. Then too, the daily appearance of new published information represents an …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xlv. Schistotaenia Srivastavai N. Sp. (Cestoda: Amabiliidae) From The Red-Necked Grebe, Podiceps Grisegena (Boddaert), Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

The genus Schistotaenia Cohn, 1900, at present includes six species, all parasites of grebes (Podicipediformes). Among helminths found in a red-necked grebe, Podiceps grisegena (Boddaert), on October 18, 1966, at Anchorage, Alaska, were cestodes representing two species of Schistotaenia, of which one is described here as new. The host was an adult bird which evidently had been injured during migration.

This cestode is named in honor of Dr. H. D. Srivastava, in recognition of his significant contributions to helminthological research.

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites And Coccidia Of Cattle And Sheep In Utah Valley, Joseph Carl Fox May 1970

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites And Coccidia Of Cattle And Sheep In Utah Valley, Joseph Carl Fox

Theses and Dissertations

A survey of gastro-intestinal parasites in cattle and sheep in Utah Valley was conducted. Cattle in the valley were not seriously parasitized by helminths, whereas sheep usually had heavy helminth infections. Ten genera of helminths and 8 species of coccidia were identified in cattle in the valley, and 14 genera of helminths and 8 species of coccidia were identified in sheep. In conjunction with the survey, meteorologic studies were conducted May through September, 1909, to ascertain the effects which irrigation had upon micro-environments on grass pastures in relation to the development of free-Iiving stages of gastro-intestinal nematodes of ruminants. The …

In the female, the maximum length is 7 mm, the esophagus is approximately 27% of the body length, and approximately 38% of the body length is posterior to the vulva. The species most closely resembles S. carolini Holl, 1928, from which it differs by having 10 to 16 rather than 25 to 35 cuticular …

Dogs, Tapeworms, Cysts : And Soiled Sheep, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1970

Dogs, Tapeworms, Cysts : And Soiled Sheep, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

To protect our export markets it is necessary to meet the required standards and to eliminate as far as possible any sources of cysts, contamination, blemished carcasses or other defects in meat.

Some of these things are beyond the control of the individual farmer, but there are some things he can do to help ensure that the sheep he sends to abattoirs are free of defects which threaten export markets.

Feeding And Care Of The Farm Dog, J B. White Jan 1970

Feeding And Care Of The Farm Dog, J B. White

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Most farmers acknowledge the value of a well trained dog when handling sheep, but few appreciate that without correct care and feeding such a dog may reduce their profits and constitute a hazard to the health of themselves and their families.

Hydatid Disease In Western Australia, G C De Chaneet Jan 1970

Hydatid Disease In Western Australia, G C De Chaneet

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

BECAUSE hydatid disease is a disease of humans as well as animals, every dog owner should be aware of the conditions that perpetuate hydatids and the methods of control.

The incidence of hydatids in Western Australia in the past has not been high.

However, the increase in sheep numbers over recent years, together with the intensification of farming methods, may lead to a rise in incidence unless stock owners, particularly sheep farmers, take steps to control the disease.

Cysticercus Ovis : Sheep Measles, G C De Chaneet Jan 1970

Cysticercus Ovis : Sheep Measles, G C De Chaneet

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

CYSTICERCUS OVIS, commonly known as sheep "measles", has come into prominence in the last few years because of the rejection of affected carcasses by overseas markets. Recently it was one of the causes of a complete ban on imports of Australian mutton by-the.iJnited States and Canada.

CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS, or "cheesy gland" as it is usually known in Australia, is a common disease of sheep which is very important in the economics of the lamb and mutton industry.

System Analysis And Nematode Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti Jan 1970

System Analysis And Nematode Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

The purpose here is to suggest a method which will permit understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of contemporary representatives of the phylum Nematoda without fossils. It is not my intent to again offer a phylogeny for the Nematoda. To say that no real benefit or knowledge of phylogeny or evolution is possible without fossils is succumbing to apathy. One cannot deny or ignore that all systems, morphological, biological and chemical manifested in modern forms developed by evolutionary sequence. It is true that with a complete fossil record the rates of evolution and developmental pressures could be accurately evaluated. However, in …

The Incidence And Intensity Of Haematozoa In The Common Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos) Of Western Washington, Ronald E. Scarvie Jan 1970

The Incidence And Intensity Of Haematozoa In The Common Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos) Of Western Washington, Ronald E. Scarvie

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and intensity of blood parasites in the common crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos). The following observations on the protozoan genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium and Trypanosoma with observations on the nematode group microfilaria, are based entirely on materials collected at Auburn, Washington during the spring of 1970.

Despite the numerous studies on prevalence of blood parasites in various birds, there have been few attempts to study the relative incidence and intensity of haematozoa in blood and tissue smears taken from the common crow. So far as the author has been able to ascertain, …

The Effect Of Gamma Irradiation On Growth Of Seven Strains Of Trypanosoma Avium, Roy Wesley Leid Jr. Jan 1970

The Effect Of Gamma Irradiation On Growth Of Seven Strains Of Trypanosoma Avium, Roy Wesley Leid Jr.

All Master's Theses

The prime motivating factor in the present study was the desire to show significant differences in radio-sensitivities within six strains of Trypanosoma avium. A seventh strain was later added for the last two irradiation treatments. Gross morphology and differences in growth curves associated with varying temperatures suggested that the strains being cultured were not the same. With these differences in mind, the strains were subjected to different dosage levels of gamma irradiation.

The Terminology And Occurrence Of Certain Structures Of Digenetic Trematodes, With Special Reference To The Hemiuroidea, Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

A number of terms applied to structures of digenetic trematodes are defined. The hermaphroditic sac of haploporids is distinguished from the sinus sac of hemiurids. The term sinus organ is applied to a cirrus-like organ in the sinus sac of several genera of Dinurinae.

Glomericirrus septemlobus Teixeira de Freitas and Kohn, 1965 is a synonym of Lecithochirium microstomum Chandler, 1935.

Erilepturus africanus Fischthal and Kuntz, 1963 is a synonym of Dinurus gizae Fischthal and Kuntz, 1963.

A New Genus Of Trematode (Digenea: Gorgoderidae) From The Ureter Of Tuna Fish (Thunnus Thynnus Maccoyii) In Australia, Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory: Library Materials

A large, digenetic trematode is described from the ureter of the tuna Thunnus thynnus moccoyii from southern Australian waters. It represents a new genus and species, Cetiotrema crassum (subfamily Gorgoderinae) distinguished by the size and shape of the body, the caeca being distant from the sides of the body, the uterus being intercaecal, the vitellaria arising as three claviform lobes on each side and the seminal vesicle at least partly anterior to the genital pore.

The genus is close to Phyllodistomum Braun; P. carangi Manter, 1947, is considered to belong to Cetiotrema; P. lancea Mamaev, 1968 is very similar …

Conclusions

1. Under experimental conditions wild boars are sensitive to toxoplasmosis to a significant degree. In all 6 of the infected animals the disease ended lethally. The characteristic clinical symptom was involvement of the eyes.

2. Spontaneous Toxoplasma antibodies were observed in 36 (34.3%) of 105 boars studied with CFRs.

3. Toxoplasma was found microscopically in smears of kidney, spleen, and brain from 3 boars; the bioprobe method revealed it in the lymph nodes of 10 animals; in these cases the strain isolated was avirulent.
