This update utilizes height-age pairs measured from 1982 - 1998. As a result, the number of observations available for analysis is 1,814 loblolly and 788 slash. It is anticipated that the equations in this Fall 1998 update may quantify the productivity of East Texas loblolly and slash pine plantations in a more accurate and reliable manner than the seven previous sets of equations.

As part of a continuing cooperative research between the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility (MwRSF); the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL); and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), several crashworthy wood bridge railings and approach railing transitions have been adapted for use on concrete bridge decks. These railings meet testing and evaluation criteria outlined in National Cooperative Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350, Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features, and include a glued-laminated timber (glulam) rail, with and without a curb, at Test Level- 2 (TL-2), a glulam rail with curb at TL-4, and a glulam …

The plans for crashworthy bridge railings for low-volume roads were developed through a cooperative research program involving the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL); the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (MwRSF); and the Forest Service, National Forest System, Engineering. Three railings were developed and successfully tested in accordance with National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350 Test Level-1 requirements. The fourth system was developed for a lower test level based on criteria developed by the Forest Service for single-lane bridges on very low-volume roads. Individual plot data from the East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project were available for analysis in this study. Each plot consists of two subplots. Each subplot is considered an observation. The analysis was limited to individual observations ages 24 years and older. All observations are unthinned.

For each observation, cubic feet total stem wood and bark per acre was calculated.

Based on these values, MAI (mean annual increment) was calculated.

The values (plus observed trees per acre) are depicted in graphs on the next 28 pages.

Currently, sampling or hazard rating insects at military installations is limited. The use of aerial videography is a relatively new technology and is currently used for aerial surveys and is being developed for hazard rating for southern pine beetle. The purpose of this study was to apply existing sampling methods for various insects and disease at the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant in Karnak, Texas and to test the effectiveness of aerial videography for hazard rating pine stands for southern pine beetle. Pine plantations on Typic Quartzipsamments in East Texas are difficult to establish. Forest management options following clearcutting are limited. An 8-year regeneration study of the growth and survival of loblolly, Pinus taeda, L. shortleaf, P. echinata Mill., slash, P. elliotii Engelm and longleaf pines P. palustris Mill. was conducted to determine optimum tree species and treatments for reforestation, and to recommend practical alternative land uses and management strategies for Typic Quartzipsamments. Successful regeneration provides new opportunities for insects and pathogens. This volume is based on an international conference, “Natural Resource Use Relations in the Trinational Sangha River Region of the Northwest Congo Basin,” held at Yale University in September 1997.
