Upland aspen (Populus spp.) forests contribute significantly to biodiversity in their circumboreal role as keystone species. As aspen ecosystems flourish or diminish, myriad dependent species follow suit. The 43-hectare Pando aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clone in Utah, USA, is thought to be the largest living organism on earth, but is faltering due to chronic herbivory. Long-term resilience in aspen communities, including Pando, rests on successful recruitment of vegetative suckers that are nutritiously desirable to browsing ungulates. Here, I evaluate aspen reproduction alongside numerous vital indicators of Pando's status in the first trend assessment of this embattled iconic forest. …

The Forest Service proposes to reduce the risk of wildfire, to protect, restore, and enhance forest ecosystem components (i.e., streams, meadows, aspen areas) in the vicinity of Gibsonville, California. A combination of hazard tree removal, forest health, and fuels reduction treatments are proposed on 1,200 acres of Forest Service system lands. These actions are proposed to be implemented on the Feather River Ranger District of the Plumas National Forest.

We assessed the effects of fire on the quality of herbaceous and browse forage for elk (Gervus e/aphus) and domestic sheep in the aspen (Populus tremu/oides) forest type. Selected forage species were sampled on burned and adjacent unburned areas during the summers of the first and second years after autumn prescribed burning of three sites in southeastern Idaho. These samples were analyzed for in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), crude protein, calcium, and phosphorus. This aspen type has a highly nutritious understory irrespective of burning. We found additional improvement in forage quality as a result of prescribed burning. In the …

Numbers of breeding birds were estimated for various sizes and ages of clearcuts, for edge habitat created by the clearcuts, leave strips between clearcuts, and uncut aspen forest (controls). Total numbers of birds were not different among three size classes or five age classes of clearcuts. Total were lower on clearcuts than on edges but not different from controls or leave strips.

Breeding birds on an aspen forest in southwestern Colorado increased in species diversity after 25% of the timber sale area forest was clearcut in patches of 3 to 20 acres. Bird population density on the forest with clearcuts was not significantly different from that on an uncut forest. Of the 20 species evaluated, six were more and one was less abundant than on the uncut forest.

Aspen forests provide important habitat for many species of wildlife (Gullion 1977b), especially in the West (see the appendix to this chapter). In the coniferous forests of the interior West, aspen groves may be the only source of abundant forage; in the grasslands they may be the sole source of cover. A primary value of the aspen ecosystem in the West during the past century has been production of forage for both wildlife and domestic livestock (see the FORAGE chapter).

Ruffed grouse habitat requirements and management opportunities have been defined by Bump et al. (1947), Grange (1948), Dorney (1959), Gullion at al. (1962), Moulton (1968), and Gullion (1972), among others. It is generally agreed that interspersion of cover types and age classes is one of the keys to better grouse populations.

Productivity of ecosystems depends to a large extent on the quantity of available nutrients. In natural ecosystems, much of the nutrient stock is unavailable because it is bound in live and dead organic matter. Additions to the pool of available nutrients come from several sources, but the largest and most important one is dead organic matter. Therefore, the productivity of ecosystems is often said to be related to the rate of nutrient release from, or the mineralization of, organic litter (Ghilarov 1971, Satchell 1974).

At Wawa, in northern Ontario, vegetation has been damaged severely by sulphur dioxide pollution from an iron-sintering plant. Damage is mainly restricted to a narrow strip northeast from the sinter plant, since southwest winds are strongly predominant. It is traceable from the air for at least 20 mile in this direction and is estimated as severe within 11 miles and very severe within 5 miles. Within about 10 miles NE, from the sinter plant ground flora variety declines markedly, from about 20-40 species per 40 square meter quadrat beyond this distance to 0-1 species within 2 miles of the pollution …

This report is a summary of all studies carried out by the Saskatchewan Forestry Branch in hardwood stands. Aspen, the principal component of the hardwood stands, is the most abundant tree species by both volume and area in Saskatchewan and is most difficult to analyze. This report presents conclusions from which further studies can be conducted. It is hoped that in the future closer correlation with site-types may be made as it is difficult and probably not desirable to make further generalization on a province-wide basis.
