Use Of Small-Scale Disturbances To Establish Native Plants In An Abandoned Agricultural Field, Janine Roubik, James Reinartz, Gretchen Meyer

Field Station Bulletins

Small-scale disturbances in plant communities create open patches that may allow new species to invade or suppressed species to become more abundant. We evaluated whether small-scale disturbances in an abandoned agricultural field dominated by exotic grasses could be used to increase abundance and diversity of native plants. Coverboards made of plywood (2 X 122 X 81cm) were laid out on a 15 meter by 15 meter grid in the South Hayfield at the Field Station in 2008 for a study of the Butler’s garter snake. The boards were kept in place until March 2010, creating many small-scale disturbances after removal …

Effects Of Management And Site History On Plant Succession And Seedbank Composition In Old-Fields At The Uwm Field Station, Beth A. Krause, Diane De Steven Apr 1996

Effects Of Management And Site History On Plant Succession And Seedbank Composition In Old-Fields At The Uwm Field Station, Beth A. Krause, Diane De Steven

Field Station Bulletins

Vegetation succession and seedbank composition were studied in eleven oldfields with differing crop histories. All the fields had been abandoned from agriculture in the mid-1960's, and some fields are currently receiving periodic management in the form of burning, mowing, and/or removal of exotic species. Oldfield plant composition was found to be most strongly influenced by management history since abandonment. Recently-managed fields had a greater abundance of certain early-successional nonnative species in the herbaceous layer, whereas unmanaged fields contained greater abundances of many later-successional, native perennial herb species. Woody plants showed the most significant response to management. Woody plant densities and …

Patterns Of Seedling Establishment In An Old Field, Patrick O'Donnell, Forest Stearns Oct 1981

Patterns Of Seedling Establishment In An Old Field, Patrick O'Donnell, Forest Stearns

Field Station Bulletins

Within 100 years after settlement began (ca. 1830), most forest land in the Milwaukee area had been influenced by agriculture. When the land was cleared for cultivation, trees were occasionally left along property boundaries, on steep slopes or in depressions. These trees served to shade the farmer and his livestock and break the wind. Beginning in the 1930's, urbanization and other changes in land use have resulted in abandonment of cultivated fields and pastures and their regrowth to forest or conversion to other uses. The isolated trees provided a continuing source of tree seed. The presence of an isolated tree …
