This research was carried out to determine the pollen quality (pollen viability and germination), quantity (pollen production) and the role of cross pollination on the fruit set in Hicaz and 33 N 26 pomegranate cultivars under Adana ecological conditions in 1997. Pollen viability levels with TTC and FDA, pollen germination level with agar in the petri method, and pollen production capacity with the hemacytometric method of these cultivars were determined in both male (A type-unfertile) and bisexual (B type-fertile) flowers. In addition to these experiments, the changes in the fruit set and fruit quality in open-, self- and cross-pollination (with …

The kinetic parameters determined under the best conditions were a Km of 4.198 mM and a Vmax of 0.84 mM/min. The enzyme was heat labile, and most activity was …

Withdrawal Strength Of Dowels In Plywood And Oriented Strand Board, Yusuf Zi̇ya Erdi̇l, Carl A. Eckelman Jan 2001

Withdrawal Strength Of Dowels In Plywood And Oriented Strand Board, Yusuf Zi̇ya Erdi̇l, Carl A. Eckelman

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) are being used increasingly in the construction of upholstered furniture frames. Yet there is little information available concerning the holding strength of various fasteners, and, in particular, dowels in these materials. A study was conducted accordingly, to obtain basic information about the holding strength of dowels in both plywood and oriented strand board. Results of the tests were incorporated into predictive expressions that allow designers to estimate withdrawal strength as a function of the diameter of the dowels, their depth of embedment and the density of the composite material. Given the variability of the …

Deep percolation losses were were 6 and 0 mm, respectively, in the first and second year of the experiment. The evapotranspirations of cotton under full irrigation condition were 496 and 629 mm for the energy balance and water budget …

An Evapotranspiration Model For Nursery Plants Grown In A Lysimeter Under Field Conditions, Hali̇l Kirnak, Ted Henry Short Jan 2001

An Evapotranspiration Model For Nursery Plants Grown In A Lysimeter Under Field Conditions, Hali̇l Kirnak, Ted Henry Short

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

A modified combination model that used ambient temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, air velocity and leaf area index (LAI) as inputs was developed for nursery plants, and its prediction was compared to the measured ET of the plant. A nursery plant of red maple (Acer rubrum) grown in a lysimeter under field conditions was used to test it. This modified combination model was shown to accurately estimate the evapotranspiration (ET) of a potted red maple (R^2=0.79). The most significant driving parameters for ET were solar radiation level and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). An exponential relationship between stomatal resistance and solar radiation for red …

The Effect Of Wood Specimen Length On The Proportional Saturation Of Preservative Fluid In Sitka Spruce (Picea Sitchensis (Bong.)Carr.) And Corsican Pine (Pinus Nigravar.Mantima), İlker Usta, Ari̇f Güray

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, the proportional saturation and the fluid uptake of preservative liquid (that was) applied under the same pressure was investigated comparatively on the various longitudinal length of wood specimens in the two softwood species. Wood specimens of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.)Carr.) and Corsican pine (Pinus nigra var.mantima) representative of two different permeability classifications, cut into five different lengths were treated with tanalith-C using the full-cell process under the same conditions. It appeared that longitudinal fluid flow decreased with increased specimen lengths. The shorter lengths were saturated effectively due to the shorter flow paths, and their retentions were higher …

SA completely inhibited the mycelial development of Fol in vitro at concentrations from 0.6 mM to 1.0 mM and ED50 value was found as 0.51 mM. GE could increase dry weight of plant, length of shoot and root growth irrespective whether Fol infected the tomato plants. The root colonization …

Search For O-Type Plants In Sugar Beet, Mustafa Erdal

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This research was started in 1995 in order to find O-types, which are important basic materials in breeding monogerm hybrid sugar beets, and to develop their male sterile parallels in six monogerm families previously bred in the Plant Breeding Department of the Sugar Institute. For this purpose, a total of 600 (100 from each family) O-type candidate fertile plants were crossed with testers which were known to be cytoplasmic male steriles (CMS) by mating one fertile and one male sterile plant in a cage insulated with cotton cloth. In crossing male sterile and fertile plants, a sufficient amount of seed …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study the possibility of using pheromone traps against California Red Scale (C.R.S.), Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) (Hom.: Diaspididae), the main pest of citrus fruits, was examined. In 1995 and 1996 the male flight periods and four peak points were determined. There was a significant correlation between trapped males and leave-fruit C.R.S. populations. By the use of pheromone traps the unobserved C.R.S. population can be determined in the orchard. The most suitable application time could be determined properly from the IPM point of view. Also mass trapping for C.R.S. was not found to be a promising method according to effectiveness …

Forest productions are very difficult, expensive and time consuming. In the Black Sea Region, forests cover generally high and steep slopes of mountainous areas. Therefore, the problems of forestry production studies are gaining in importance. In forestry production studies, the absence of mechanization level and its application causes qualitative and quantitative losses. In this study, the time required for felling and skidding operations in winter were determined and factors affecting logging were observed and recorded. The data obtained were later analyzed. According to this study, productivity at winter harvesting for felling operations is 1,948 m^3/h, for skidding with human power …

The Chemistry Of Fresh Tomato Flavor, Emi̇n Yilmaz Jan 2001

The Chemistry Of Fresh Tomato Flavor, Emi̇n Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Tomato flavor results from taste components, aromatic volatiles and a complex interaction between them. Lack of characteristic flavor in supermarket tomatoes is a common consumer complaint. Sugars, organic acids, free amino acids, and salts are the main taste components. With over 400 volatile compounds identified, only thirty are present in concentrations over one ppb and of these, only 16 contribute significantly to the perceptible flavor. Radiolabeled substrate and enzyme denaturation studies have indicated involvement of some pathway enzymes in the biosynthesis of tomato aroma compounds. Studies of fresh tomato flavor are important for the efforts at improving fruit quality through …
