Effects Of Different Soil Salinity Levels On Germination And Seedling Growth Of Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius L.), Mehmet Demi̇r Kaya, Ari̇f İpek, Ahmet Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is rated as moderately salt tolerant and it can produce profitable crops on saline soils. It is slightly more tolerant of salinity than barley but is more tolerant than wheat. Because salinity reduces germination and delays emergence, safflower stands tend to be irregular and crop yield is depressed. However, some varieties are less affected by salinity than others. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of soil salinity levels (0.8, 2.5, 5.1, 8.7, 13.0, 15.2 and 23.0 dS m^{-1}) on germination and seedling growth of three safflower varieties, one of which is spiny (5-154 …

Estimation Of The Effect Of Soil Salinity On Crop Yield Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information System, Mehmet Ali̇ Çullu Jan 2003

Estimation Of The Effect Of Soil Salinity On Crop Yield Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information System, Mehmet Ali̇ Çullu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was conducted to estimate the effect of salinity on crop yield by employing a geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing technologies. The saline soils of Arıcan village, located in the southeastern part of Harran Plain, were studied. Surface soil samples representing each soil series in the study area were collected and analyzed to generate an electrical conductivity (EC) map of the study area soils. Using ground truth information, satellite images were classified and land use classes were determined in the study area. The EC map, land use map, soil map and parcel map were combined and analyzed …

Determination Of The Salt Tolerance Of Some Barley Genotypes And The Characteristics Affecting Tolerance, Seydi̇ Ahmet Bağci, Hasan Eki̇z, Ahmet Yilmaz Jan 2003

Determination Of The Salt Tolerance Of Some Barley Genotypes And The Characteristics Affecting Tolerance, Seydi̇ Ahmet Bağci, Hasan Eki̇z, Ahmet Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The salt (NaCl) tolerance of 8 barley genotypes was investigated. Plants were grown hyroponically in Hoagland solution at 5 different NaCl concentrations. Germination percentage, shoot and root length, shoot and root dry weight, salt tolerance percentage, and K and Na concentrations in the shoots and roots were evaluated. Salt tolerance percentage, which is calculated from the germination percentage and dry weight production, was the most reliable criterion. On the other hand, with some exceptions, high K concentration and K/Na ratios were other potential criteria. Erginel-90 and WBELT-10 showed high levels of tolerance; and Obruk-86, Anadolu-86, Kıral-97 and Karatay-94 showed medium …
