Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) is a plant of the family Lamiaceae. The present study aimed to determine the chemical composition of the lemon balm essential oil grown in Northeastern Bulgaria, to perform a comparative analysis of its antimicrobial activity with that of citral, and to determine its surface tension properties. The main compounds of the essential oil (concentration above 3%) were: ß-caryophyllene (20.45%), geranial (19.74%), neral (15.81%), germacrene D (11.50%), (R)-(+)-citronellal (3.07%), and geranyl acetate (3.04%). The antibacterial activity of the essential oil was weak against the tested gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Exceptions were observed for Listeria monocytogenes …

Yield And Oil Composition Of Peppermint Cultivars Grown In The Isparta Climate Of Turkey, Kemal Yilmaz, İsa Telci̇

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Peppermint, Mentha piperita L. belonging to the Lamiaceae family, contains a valuable essential oil known for its high menthol and menthone content. During the vegetation seasons of 2016 and 2017, field studies were conducted in Turkey?s Isparta climate by using randomized blocks to examine the yield and oil composition of the new peppermint cultivars. In these studies, Multimentha produced the highest herb yield even though the quality of its essential oil is relatively poor due to its low menthol content. Yield levels of other cultivars were similar to each other with the same statistical group. In the study, Citaro, Tokat …

The chemical composition, antioxidant properties and antibacterial activities of different extracts (water, ethanol, acetate ethyl and hexane) and essential oil from Platycladus orientalis leaves were analysed in this study. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation, and its chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major components of the essential oil were α-pinene (40.2%), β-phellandrene (9.3), α-cedrol (9.2%) and β-caryophyllene (6.3%). Phytochemical analysis of crude extracts and essential oil revealed the richness of ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts in total phenolic content (62.69 and 61.44 mg GAE/g DW, respectively). The antioxidant activities of all …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The pine processionary moth, Taumetopoea pityocampa (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae), is an important pest of coniferous trees in the forests of Turkey and throughout the world. In order to control this pest, different methods such as mechanical, biological, and chemical control have been used. However, this pest is still a major problem in Turkey, as well as globally. The study aimed to investigate the larvicidal effect of essential oil obtained from Achillea biebersteinii Afan. (Asteraceae) in different doses (10, 15, and 20 μL Petri-1) over time (12, 24, 36, and 48 h) against T. pityocampa larvae in laboratory …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Essential oil vapors obtained by the hydrodistillation of Prangos ferulacea (Umbelliferae) were tested on the different stages of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and egg parasitoid Trichogramma embryophagum Hartig (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Extracts of the volatile fractions from P. ferulacea were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major compound of the essential oil was detected as 2,3,6-trimethyl benzaldehyde (66.59%) and the minor compound was heneicosane (0.02%). The third instar larvae of E. kuehniella (LC_{50}: 379.662 µL L^{-1} air and LC_{99}: 538.755 µL L^{-1} air) and the pupal stage of T. embryophagum (LC_{50}: 5.947 µL L^{-1} air and LC_{99}: 19.568 µL …

Seed Priming With Iron And Boron Enhances Germination And Yield Of Dill (Anethum Graveolens), Bahram Mirshekari

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

To study the effects of seed priming with solutions of Fe and B, each at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%, and 1.5% Fe + 1% B, on the germination and yield of dill (Anethum graveolens), 2 separate laboratory and field experiments were conducted. The results of the laboratory experiments indicated that the effect of the studied treatments on the final germination percentage was significant. The seedling vigor index of dill was restricted when the Fe and B concentrations increased beyond 1.5% and 1%, respectively. The highest seed yield was recorded for the concentration of 1.5% Fe + 1% …

Influence Of Nutrient Concentrations And Nacl Salinity On The Growth, Photosynthesis, And Essential Oil Content Of Peppermint And Lemon Verbena, S. J. Tabatabaie, J. Nazari

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Growth and essential oil content of peppermint (Menhta piperita var. officinalis) and lemon verbena (Lipia citriodora var. Verbena) were evaluated in response to salinity and nutrient solution concentrations, measured as electrical conductivity (EC 0.7, 1.4, 2.8, 5.6, and 5.6_{Na} dS m^{-1}). In peppermint, the highest fresh weight and dry weight were observed in the 1.4 dS m^{-1} treatment. The increased EC with either NaCl or all nutrients at 5.6 dS m^{-1} reduced the fresh weight of lemon verbena. The maximum fresh weight and dry weight in lemon verbena were obtained in both 1.4 and 2.8 dS m^{-1} treatments. Increasing EC …

Yield Characteristics And Essential Oil Composition Of Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis L.) Grown In The Aegean Region Of Turkey, Ali̇ Osman Sari, Ayhan Ceylan

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Eleven lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) populations originating from different sources in Turkey and European countries were investigated in two ecologically different locations, Menemen and Bozdağ, in the Aegean region of Turkey over three years to determine the populations having high quality and yield. There were significant variations between locations, years and populations in terms of yield and quality characters. The ecology was highly suitable in Menemen for growing lemon balm successfully and almost all yield and quality characters in Menemen were significantly higher than those in Bozdağ. The plant height, green herb yield, drug leaves yield and essential oil …
