Turkey is an important bread wheat producer. The objective of this study was to dissect the diversity of genetic, agronomic, and quality characteristics of bread wheat cultivars grown on 25% of the total wheat area in Turkey. A total of 24 wheat cultivars and 5 wild progenitors of wheat were examined using 24 simple sequence repeat (SSR) primers with a known physical locus on the A, B, and D genomes of hexaploid wheat. A total of 72 bands produced 939 alleles on the wheat cultivars and wild progenitors. Markers were efficient in discriminating the species and the highest genetic diversity …

The Fertile Crescent is a primary center of wheat domestication and diversity. Despite its importance for bread wheat breeding, few efforts have been made to fully understand the genetic structure of the Anatolian bread wheat. A lack of information regarding the genetic structure of the bread wheat from this region is evident. Therefore, this study aimed to provide new insights into the genetic structure of bread wheat from Anatolia. A genetic linkage map was constructed based on recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between the Turkish cultivar Gerek-79 and the Moroccan cultivar Arrehane, by using DArT markers anchored with …

Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum durum (Desf.) Husn.) is produced on a large scale in Turkey, northern Syria, Kazakhstan, Iran, southern Europe, and North America, and is widely used for making spaghetti, noodles, couscous, and flatbreads. Uptake of Cd by durum wheat species is well known. The objectives of this study were to determine the cadmium (Cd) level of the soils and durum and bread wheat grown on Harran Plain, southeast Turkey, and evaluate it in terms of food safety. Soil samples were taken from 16 selected grains, leaves, and roots of durum and bread wheats for analyses. The total Cd …

Bread Wheat Responds Salt Stress Better Than Einkorn Wheat Does During Germination, Di̇dem Aslan, Nusret Zenci̇rci̇, Murat Etöz, Bülent Ordu, Sara Bataw

Salt stress during germination degenerates crop establishment and declines yield in wheat (Triticum subsp.). Against salt (NaCl) stress, we investigated 12 bread (Triticum aestivum L.) and 10 einkorn wheat (T. monococcum subsp. monococcum) entries for germination rate, germinating power, coleoptile length, shoot length, root length, shoot/root length ratio, root fresh weight, root dry weight, and root fresh/dry weigh ratio. An effective blocking in variance analysis improved statistical significance and differentiation between germination stages and wheat entries. Salt total and salt ranking tolerance indices grouped the wheat entries into tolerant (Bayraktar 2000, Gerek 79, İkizce 96, Gün 91, Demir 2000, and …
