This research was carried out to determine the pollen quality (pollen viability and germination), quantity (pollen production) and the role of cross pollination on the fruit set in Hicaz and 33 N 26 pomegranate cultivars under Adana ecological conditions in 1997. In this study, it was intended to determine the usage possibilites of some alpine plant species having high potential value as ornamental plants for landscape planning in Erzurum and environs. The investigation was conducted in 15 locations of 1750-3176 m altitudes between May 1997 and September 1998. In the study, direct plant observation methods were employed as well as floristic plant analysis. The results showed that 166 alpine plant species were found belonging 32 families and useful for landscape planning. This trial was conducted on the experimental fields of the Agricultural Faculty at Atatürk University in 1987-92 and five-year results were evaluated except for the first year. The effects of different row spacings (20, 30 and 40 cm), cutting stubble heights (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 cm) and stubble burning on seed yield and yield components of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum) were studied. In this study the possibility of using pheromone traps against California Red Scale (C.R.S.), Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) (Hom.: Diaspididae), the main pest of citrus fruits, was examined. In 1995 and 1996 the male flight periods and four peak points were determined. There was a significant correlation between trapped males and leave-fruit C.R.S. populations. By the use of pheromone traps the unobserved C.R.S. population can be determined in the orchard. The most suitable application time could be determined properly from the IPM point of view. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of water-use efficiency and changes in the yield-response factor of cotton irrigated with an irrigation drip system. The amount of water applied was based on free surface evaporation from a screened Class-A Pan. Axi 1 is the only characterized auxin independent gene in tobacco plants. In this study, the effect of axi 1 gene on cortical cell division during different stages of nitrogen fixation and on the role of polar auxin transport were investigated. Crude tomato lipoxygenase (LOX) from ripe Florida47 tomatoes was used in this study. Extracted crude LOX was assayed spectrophotometrically. The effects of different buffers and pHs, substrate preparations, temperature and tissue location on LOX activity were evaluated. The enzyme was most active with MES buffer at a pH of 6.0 and a temperature of 25ºC. The best substrate was the first preparation with linoleic acid/Tween 20 at a ratio of 1:1.5. The kinetic parameters determined under the best conditions were a Km of 4.198 mM and a Vmax of 0.84 mM/min. The enzyme was heat labile, and most activity was …

Yet there is little information available concerning the holding strength of various fasteners, and, in particular, dowels in these materials. This study aimed at comparing actual water consumption of cotton obtained by the water balance method under full and limited irrigation conditions, with that estimated by a micrometeorological method (energy balance), which is being widely used nowadays. Results indicated that in the first year the total irrigation water applied was 438 mm, whereas in the second year it was 199 mm. Deep percolation losses were were 6 and 0 mm, respectively, in the first and second year of the experiment. The effect of salicylic acid (SA)and Glomus etunicatum (GE)on plant development of tomatoes and infection potential of wilt disease Fusarium oxysporum f.sp lycopersici (Fol)were studied. The effects of different SA concentrations on mycelial development of Fol were tested in vitro and two concentrations of SA and GE were included in pot experiment. SA completely inhibited the mycelial development of Fol in vitro at concentrations from 0.6 mM to 1.0 mM and ED50 value was found as 0.51 mM. 2,4-D amine and 2,4-D isooctylester were sprayed repeatedly in the spring of 5 consecutive years on spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.cv.Kırik)in Erzurum during the years 1990-1994. The herbicide efficacy against all broad-leaved weeds and against the most common weed species was determined by comparing the number of weeds in untreated and treated plots. The most abundant weed species were Polygonum aviculare, Amaranthus retroflexus and Chenopodium albumin spring wheat. The effect of 2,4-D amine decreased after 3 or 4 years in A.retroflexus, C.album,Convolvulus arvensis, Acroptilon repens, Lactuca serriola, P.aviculare, Cirsium arvense and other broad-leaved weeds. In this study, variability in pathogenicity among Fusarium graminearum isolates from different locations in Ohio was determined. The most virulent isolates from these locations were chosen and used in segregation studies to evaluate the resistance of some resistant by resistant winter wheat crosses to Fusarium head scab. Differences in pathogenicity levels were significant among isolates even from the same location. Several generalizations can be made about the segregating generations in this study. Both an \alpha-amylase gene of Bacillus subtilis RSKK246 and a gene encoding \beta-glucanase from B.subtilis RSKK243 were cloned and expressed in both E.coli XL1-Blue MRF and B.subtilis YB886 by using the vectors pUC18 and pUB110 respectively. These genes were also cloned into the E.coli-yeast shuttle vectors pRS406 and pRS416 for transfer into the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.These constructs carrying \alpha -amylase and \alpha -glucanase,genes which were cloned into the pRS406 vector,were expressed by integration into the yeast chromosome.These genes were also expressed in the yeast by autonomous replication of the ARS/CEN plasmid pRS416.This work demonstrates that genes belonging to B.subtilis can …

A modified combination model that used ambient temperature,relative humidity,solar radiation,air velocity and leaf area index (LAI) as inputs was developed for nursery plants, and its prediction was compared to the measured ET of the plant. A nursery plant of red maple (Acer rubrum) grown in a lysimeter under field conditions was used to test it. This modified combination model was shown to accurately estimate the evapotranspiration (ET) of a potted red maple (R^2=0.79). This study was conducted under Tokat ecological conditions during 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1995/96. Fifteen narbonne vetch (Vicia narbonensis L.) lines obtained from ICARDA were used. The results of variance analyses showed that there were statistically significant differences among lines for some characters. The highest seed yield (217.2 kg/da) was produced by the line 2466 and the lowest (144.9 kg/da) by the line 2380. 1000-seed weight ranged between 158.7 and 301.2 g, whereas biological yield ranged between 547.4 and 848.1 kg/da. Tomato flavor results from taste components, aromatic volatiles and a complex interaction between them. Lack of characteristic flavor in supermarket tomatoes is a common consumer complaint. Sugars, organic acids, free amino acids, and salts are the main taste components. With over 400 volatile compounds identified, only thirty are present in concentrations over one ppb and of these, only 16 contribute significantly to the perceptible flavor. The serving size and gender effects on product acceptance and ideal attribute (lemonade flavor, sourness and sweetness) ratings of lemonade were investigated using a 15-point hedonic scale and a 5-point just-right scale, respectively. Females (67) and males (68) consumed a 4 oz (118 ml) sample ad libitum, or a full 8 oz (236 ml) serving. Ad libitum male consumption was not different (p>0.05) from female consumption. A low correlation (R^2=0.011) was observed between the amount of lemonade consumed and product acceptability or just-right attribute ratings. In the present study, the oil contents and some oil quality properties of seeds taken from 18 grape cultivars were examined. The results showed that the oil concentration of seeds ranged from 11.6 to 19.6%. Grape seeds were rich in oleic and linoleic acids, ranging from 17.8 to 26.5% and 60.1 to 70.1%, respectively. The degree of unsaturation in the grape seed oil was over 86%, and the average concentration of total tocopherol in oil was around 454 mg/kg. In this research, partial nucleotide sequences of the axi 1 gene, which is related to auxin perception and transduction, isolated from Vicia sativa using cDNA library screening were investigated. Four V. sativa cDNA clones representing homologous of the tobacco axi 1 (auxin independent) cDNA clone were isolated and characterized. With sequence analysis two different clones were observed, called 10/3a and 16/3b. Sequences about 500 bp from the 5' end and 450 bp from the 3' end were determined from the 10/3a clone. In this study, the effects of different sucrose, BAP and Kinetin concentrations in MS medium on plantlet formation, bud formation on the plantlets and development of embryos isolated from the seeds of Tilia platyphyllos under in vitro conditions were investigated. In addition, the effects of different culture times on the development of embryos and plantlet formation were studied. The results indicated that the cultured embryos on the media supplemented with sucrose (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 g/l) developed plantlets with epicotyls and roots. Dynamic Behavior Of The Onion Price In Turkey, Hali̇l Fi̇dan, Ali̇ Koç

This study analyzes the onion market and the dynamic behavior of real onion prices in Turkey. The price responsiveness of the supply, demand and export of dry onions was determined. The equilibrium price for producers was derived using the market closing condition of the partial equilibrium model. Price flexibility was also estimated using wholesale market data. The results verified the existence of cyclical behavior of onion prices in the market. The elasticities evaluated at the sample mean were 0.26, -1.02, and -0.24 for supply, export demand and flexibility respectively. This study was performed to determine the effects of exposure to outdoor condition and of the bleaching process after exposure outdoor conditions after the bleaching process on hardness, both parallel and perpendicular to the fibre axis, on Scotchs pine (Pinus Sylvestris Lipsky) wood. For this purpose, samples were exposed to outdoor conditions for 12 months, and afterwards they were bleached with solution groups of 18% NaOH+H_2O_2, NaSiO_3+H_2O_2 and Ca(OH)_2+H_2O_2.
