Investigation On The Behavior Of Rigid Polyvinylchloride Pipes Subjected To Uniaxial Compression Loads, Alhamati Abdullah Ali Nasser, Ghazali Abdul Halim, Norzaie Jamalodin

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The objective of this research was to investigate the capability of rigid Polyvinylchloride (PVC-U) pipes to sustain axial loads. The behavior of PVC-U pipes specimens subjected to short-term uniaxial compression loads were experimentally investigated. Results of the load-displacement tests on pipes of different wall thickness, diameter, and specimen heights were recorded. The experimental test results show that the PVC-U pipes are capable of supporting loads greater than the required design load (3.4 kN). Increasing the pipe specimen height decreases the pipe strength for supporting the axial loads. Euler buckling was observed in the pipe specimens with small diameter and long …

Improving The Baculovirus Expression Vector System With Vankyrin-Enhanced Technology, Kendra H. Steele, Barbara J. Stone, Kathleen M. Franklin, Angelika Fath-Goodin, Xiufeng Zhang, Haobo Jiang, Bruce A. Webb, Christoph Geisler

Entomology Faculty Publications

The baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) is a widely used platform for the production of recombinant eukaryotic proteins. However, the BEVS has limitations in comparison to other higher eukaryotic expression systems. First, the insect cell lines used in the BEVS cannot produce glycoproteins with complex‐type N‐glycosylation patterns. Second, protein production is limited as cells die and lyse in response to baculovirus infection. To delay cell death and lysis, we transformed several insect cell lines with an expression plasmid harboring a vankyrin gene (P‐vank‐1), which encodes an anti‐apoptotic protein. Specifically, we transformed Sf9 cells, Trichoplusia ni High Five …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Rationale: Cardiac lipotoxicity, characterized by increased uptake, oxidation and accumulation of lipid intermediates, contributes to cardiac dysfunction in obesity and diabetes. However, mechanisms linking lipid overload and mitochondrial dysfunction are incompletely understood.

Objective: To elucidate the mechanisms for mitochondrial adaptations to lipid overload in postnatal hearts in vivo.

Methods and Results: Using a transgenic mouse model of cardiac lipotoxicity overexpressing long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase 1 in cardiomyocytes, we show that modestly increased myocardial fatty acid uptake leads to mitochondrial structural remodeling with significant reduction in minimum diameter. This is associated with increased palmitoyl-carnitine oxidation and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The semiconductor industry needs low dielectric constant (low k-value) materials to more advance microprocessor and chips by reducing the size of the device features. In fabricate this context, a new material with lower k value than conventional silica ( k = 3.9 - 4.2 ) is needed in order to improve the circuit performance. As per the recent International Semiconductor Technology plan, a low-k material with a k = 1.6 will be needed by 2010. The choice of the inorganic zeolite membrane is an attractive option for low k material and suitable for microprocess application. In the present study, a …

The Safety Of Building Structures Subject To Unusual Natural And Man-Made Disasters, Pho Nguyen Van Nov 2017

The Safety Of Building Structures Subject To Unusual Natural And Man-Made Disasters, Pho Nguyen Van

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Previously, we often use the statistical data on natural disasters and mathematical tools such as probabilistic theory, mathematical statistics and random processes to express and analyze natural disasters' phenomena when dealing with the safety problem of building structures subject to natural disasters. However, due to unusual change of the global climate, natural disasters have changed essentially the intensity, frequency and the appearing time so we cannot rely on the statistical data on natural disasters in the past to do that. Therefore, renovation of the thought on selection of plans, calculation, design, and evaluation of safety of building structures to accommodate …

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications

We have developed a novel method that enables global subtelomere and haplotype-resolved analysis of telomere lengths at the single-molecule level. An in vitro CRISPR/Cas9 RNA-directed nickase system directs the specific labeling of human (TTAGGG) n DNA tracts in genomes that have also been barcoded using a separate nickase enzyme that recognizes a 7bp motif genome-wide. High-throughput imaging and analysis of large DNA single molecules from genomes labeled in this fashion using a nanochannel array system permits mapping through subtelomere repeat element (SRE) regions to unique chromosomal DNA while simultaneously measuring the (TTAGGG) n tract length at the end of each …

Characteristics Of Solid-State Calcium Ion Sensors Based On Photocurable And Selfplasticising Polyacrylate Matrices, Heng Lee Yook, Hall Elizabeth A.H.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

New membrane materials based on cross-linked poly(n-butyl acrylate) (nBA), have been used successfully as calcium ion-selective membranes. These membrane materials possess selfplasticising property and hence do not require plasticisers. The photocurability and good adhesion characteristics of these polymer matrices enable workable solid-state calcium ion sensors to be fabricated by simple photocure procedures employing the calcium ionophore ETH5234 and a lipophilic additive as ion sensing components. The calcium ion-selectivity of the sensors can be controlled by varying the chemical composition of the photocured membrane. An optimum amount of the cross-linker 2,2-hexanedioldiacrylate (HDDA) and the incorporation of n-heptyl acrylate (nHA) led to …

The evaluation and assessment of the performance of photovoltaic (PV) cells in terms of measurable parameters requires the measurement of the current as a function of voltage, temperature, intensity, wind speed and spectrum. Mo st noticeable of all these parameters is the PV conversion efficiency η, defined as the maximum electrical power Pmax produced by the PV cell divided by the incident photon power P in which is measured with respect to standard test conditions (STC). These conditions refer to the spectrum (AM 1.5), solar radiation intensity (1000 Wm-2), cell temperature (25 ±2oC) and wind speed (2 mph). Tests under …

Effect Of The Reciprocating Mass Of Slider-Crank Mechanism On Torsional Vibrations Of Diesel Engine Systems, Pasricha M.S. Pasricha, Hashim F.M. Oct 2017

Effect Of The Reciprocating Mass Of Slider-Crank Mechanism On Torsional Vibrations Of Diesel Engine Systems, Pasricha M.S. Pasricha, Hashim F.M.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The torsional vibration phenomenon in the running gear of reciprocating engine systems isusually dealt with by considering a series of constant inertias connected by sections of massless shafting. However in reality, a slider crank mechanism is a vibrating system with varying inertia because the effective inertia of the total oscillating mass of each crank assembly varies twice per revolution of the crankshaft. Large variations in inertia torques can give rise to the phenomenonof secondary resonance in torsional vibration of modern marine diesel engines which can not be explained by conventional theory incorporating only the mean values of the varying inertias. …

Hedge Algebras: An Algebraic Approach To Domains Of Linguistic Variables And Their Applicability, N.C. Ho N.C. Oct 2017

Hedge Algebras: An Algebraic Approach To Domains Of Linguistic Variables And Their Applicability, N.C. Ho N.C.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The paper is an overview on an algebraic approach to domains of linguistic variables and somefirst applications to show the applicability of this new approach. In this approach, each linguistic domain can be considered as a hedge algebra (HA for short) and based on the structure of HAs,a notion of fuzziness measure of linguistic hedges and terms can be defined. In order to apply hedge algebras to those problems, the results of which are needed, a notion of semantically quantifying mappings (SQMs) will be introduced. It shown that there is a closed connection between SQMs and fuzziness measure of hedge …
