Synthesis, Kinetic And Photocatalytic Studies Of Porphyrin-Ruthenium-Oxo Complexes, Yan Huang
Synthesis, Kinetic And Photocatalytic Studies Of Porphyrin-Ruthenium-Oxo Complexes, Yan Huang
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Macrocyclic ligand-complexed transition metal-oxo intermediates are the active oxidizing species in a variety of important biological and catalytic oxidation reactions. Many transition metal catalysts have been designed to mimic the predominant oxidation catalysts in Nature, namely the cytochrome P450 enzymes. Ruthenium porphyrin complexes have been the center of the research and have successfully been utilized, as catalysts, in major oxidation reactions such as the hydroxylation of alkanes. This study focuses on kinetic and photocatalytic studies of oxidation reactions with wellcharacterized high-valent ruthenium-oxo porphyrin complexes.
The trans-dioxoruthenium(VI) porphyrins have been among the best characterized metal-oxo intermediates and their involvement as …

Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Librarians from Utah State University explain recent efforts to encourage subject librarians to take a more holistic view of their roles. We are shifting from a traditional emphasis primarily on collection development and refocusing on natural connections between collections, instruction, liaison, and reference service. The poster provides background about Utah State University’s situation and explains our approach to analyzing local needs and culture to inform development of a new organizational structure. We describe our vision of subject librarianship, the process by which we assessed librarians’ ideas and goals for performing as subject librarians, and the actions we are taking to …
Synthesis, Characterization And Biological Activities Of Three Indole Schiff Bases And Their Copper And Nickel Complexes., Nazzatush Shimar Jamaludin
Synthesis, Characterization And Biological Activities Of Three Indole Schiff Bases And Their Copper And Nickel Complexes., Nazzatush Shimar Jamaludin
Student Works (2010-2019)
Three derivatives of indole-3-carboxaldehyde with indole-3-acetic hydrazide and their copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes were synthesized. The Schiff base compounds were varied on the substituent where each compound holds a hydrogen, chlorine and bromine atom on the 5th position of indole-3-carboxaldehyde. The structures of the ligands and their complexes were elucidated by various characterization methods. All compounds were screened for their biological effects on neuroprotective screening (in vitro), acute toxicity test (in vivo), ethanol-induced gastric ulcer (anti-ulcer) and glucose tolerance test (antidiabetic). All compounds except bromine-containing compounds were not dose dependent while compounds with bromine displayed significant results, acting as inhibitory …

Adsorption Of Lead (Ii) By A Non-Living Algal Biomass., Mudher A. Hussein
Student Works (2010-2019)
Conventional techniques for removing dissolved heavy metals are only practical and cost-effective when applied to high strength wastes with heavy metal ion concentrations greater than 100 ppm. The possibility of using a non-living algal biomass to solve this problem was studied. Lead(II) was used in this study because it has been reported to cause several disorders in human. The non-living algal biomass was obtained from the filamentous green alga Spirogyra neglecta. The effects of initial concentration and contact time, pH, and temperature on the adsorption of lead(II) by the non-living algal biomass were studied. The equilibrium isotherms and kinetics were …
Potential Role Of Micro-Algae On Global Energy Supply, Sage Callaway-Keeley, Stephanie Huynh
Potential Role Of Micro-Algae On Global Energy Supply, Sage Callaway-Keeley, Stephanie Huynh
Student Research Posters
The most effective ways to reduce CO2 emissions are to improve the energy efficiency of each economic sector and to reduce the cutting of tropical and temperate forests around the world. These options, however, may not fully reach their technical and economic potential due to various political and socioeconomic. The most practical of these is to increase CO2 sinks through photosynthesis in both standing tree biomass and in ocean primary producers. The use of marine algae as CO2 sinks is for large-scale CO2 mitigation: the use of phytoplankton through Fe fertilization and macro algal (kelp) farms, which can be used …

The global energy economy is huge and thoughts of replacing large amounts of petroleum based fuels by massive levels of fermentation of grains are not realistic. On an energy basis what global agriculture produces for food will almost cover the energy demands if all of it is redirected to the production of fuels—either as alcohols for gasoline or as fat derivatives for diesel fuel. This means that chemical processes need to be developed that allow inclusion of non-food based agricultural and urban wastes as well as forest debris into the energy economy. These represent opportunities to capture new sources of …

Identification Of Guanylate Cyclases And Related Signaling Proteins In Sperm Tail From Sea Stars By Mass Spectrometry, Mia Nakachi, Midori Matsumoto, Philip M. Terry, Ronald L. Cerny, Hideaki Moriyama
Hideaki Moriyama Publications
Marine invertebrates employ external fertilization to take the advantages of sexual reproduction as one of excellent survival strategies. To prevent mismatching, successful fertilization can be made only after going though strictly defined steps in the fertilization. In sea stars, the fertilization process starts with the chemotaxis of sperm followed by hyperactivation of sperm upon arriving onto the egg coat, and then sperm penetrate to the egg coat before achieving the fusion. To investigate whether the initiation of chemotaxis and the following signaling has species specificity, we conducted comparative studies in the protein level among sea stars, Asterias amurensis, A. forbesi …

This study addresses how humic substance (HS) chemical composition and photoreactivity affect bacterial growth, respiration, and growth efficiency (BGE) in lake water. Aqueous solutions of HSs from diverse aquatic environments representing different dissolved organic matter sources (autochthonous and allochthonous) were exposed to artificial solar UV radiation. These solutions were added to lake water passed through a 0.7-μm pore-size filter (containing grazer-free lake bacteria) followed by dark incubation for 5, 43, and 65 h. For the 5-h incubation, several irradiated HSs inhibited bacterial carbon production (BCP) and this inhibition was highly correlated with H2O2 photoproduction. The H2 …
Auditing And Biological Treatment Of Oleochemical Industry Waste, Fauziah Shahul Hamid
Auditing And Biological Treatment Of Oleochemical Industry Waste, Fauziah Shahul Hamid
Student Works (2000-2009)
The utilization of renewable resources particularly from plant-based industries, such as, in the oleochemical sector makes it possible for further expansion of down-stream process products. However, to remain competitive the pollution generated from this industry should not be taken lightly. Implementation of cleaner technology into the oleochemical process will increase the efficiency of resource utilization of the industry, concurrently reducing quantity of waste generated. Waste audit conducted at Cognis Oleochemical (M) (COM) Sdn. Bhd. indicated that the major process-wastes generated by the facility were glycerol residue (GR) from Cognis Rika (M) Sdn. Bhd. (CRM) and wastewater sludge (WWS) from COM …
Gas Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Captopril And Its Application In Pharmacokinetic Studies In Healthy Subjects, Zamri Chik
Student Works (2000-2009)
Captopril is a highly specific competitive inhibitor of the angiotensin-convening enzyme (ACE). This enzyme converts angiotensin I, a relatively inactive decapeptide, to angiotensin II , a potent endogenous vasoconstrictor substance. Captopril is widely used for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. This drug, which contains a sulphydryl group binds readily to albumin and to other plasma proteins. Captopril is unstable in blood and plasma ex vivo because of the reactivity of sulphydryl group which results in oxidation and rapid formation of disulphides. Therefore a fixative or a stabiliser must be added to each blood sample immediately following collection. …
Sds Non-Acrylamide Polymeric Gel-Filled Capillary Electrophoresis For Molecular Size Separation Of Protein, Devon Andres
Sds Non-Acrylamide Polymeric Gel-Filled Capillary Electrophoresis For Molecular Size Separation Of Protein, Devon Andres
Honors Theses
Sodium dodecyl sulfide (SDS) non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns are a new technology being used for analysis and separation of biotechnology-derived proteins. This research was to compare this new technology to the current methods of SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC). The molecular mass of four different recombinant proteins were determined by two commercialized SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns, SDS-PAGE, and HPSEC. The data obtained showed that the SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns were compatible with the SDS-PAGE technique for molecular mass determination. HPSEC was shown to be unreliable for molecular weight determination. SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary …
