Does Tcdd Exposure Alter Β7-Integrin Expression On Mouse B Cells?, Sebastian Ramos May 2019

Does Tcdd Exposure Alter Β7-Integrin Expression On Mouse B Cells?, Sebastian Ramos

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Activated aryl hydrocarbon receptor with ligand 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) alters immune responses, including immunoglobulin A (IgA). Manipulation of antibody production via this ligand-activated receptor may provide a novel approach to enhance vaccination in the intestines. The present study aimed to explain the mechanism responsible for increased levels of fecal IgA in TCDD-treated mice. We hypothesized that TCDD enhances migration of B cells from non-intestinal tissue to the intestines. Here we predicted that β7-integrin, an essential protein for B cell migration into the intestines, would be upregulated by TCDD exposure on B cells. Female C57BL/6 mice were treated with a single dose …

Trefoil Factor 1 (Tff1) Expression In E3 And Ewd8 Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Jazmyn Mosqueda-Banuelos May 2019

Trefoil Factor 1 (Tff1) Expression In E3 And Ewd8 Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Jazmyn Mosqueda-Banuelos

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The ability to identify and treat cancer early can drastically improve patient survival outcomes. While much effort is placed on anti-cancer therapeutics, a developing area of interest is the identification of cancer biomarkers for the early detection of different types of cancer. Trefoil factors (TFFs) are a family of proteins whose known functions suggest that they may be major contributors to cancer; however, these proteins are understudied in a disease state like cancer. In this work, we identify expression of TFF1 among varying cancer types. We then investigate the correlation between varying levels of TFF1 expression and the aggressiveness of …

Investigating The Antidiabetic Effect Of Metformin On Pyruvate Carboxylase, Guadalupe A. Solis May 2019

Investigating The Antidiabetic Effect Of Metformin On Pyruvate Carboxylase, Guadalupe A. Solis

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Metformin is the most commonly prescribed treatment for type II diabetes. While the clinical effects of this generic drug are established, exact targets of metformin action remain unclear. The hypothesis of the present study was that metformin lowers blood glucose through inhibition of pyruvate carboxylase (PC), an enzyme catalyzing the first committed step of gluconeogenesis. Because metformin is relatively low cost, it is widely accessible to communities worldwide; currently, 150 million individuals depend on metformin for treatment. Thorough investigation of all targets involved in action of metformin becomes crucial, as it further explains the adverse effects of the drug. The …

Differential Prey Delivery Rates In Male And Female Rock Wrens As An Indicator Of Parental Effort, Ryan Worley Apr 2019

Differential Prey Delivery Rates In Male And Female Rock Wrens As An Indicator Of Parental Effort, Ryan Worley

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The Rock Wren (Salpinctes obsoletus) is a small songbird native to Colorado and many Western states in arid climates. Scientific understanding of these birds is limited, and most knowledge about their behaviors is based on anecdotal evidence. In this study, we aimed to investigate the variability in parental effort between males and females with regards to food delivery to hatchlings. We placed motion-activated field cameras at the entrance of several Rock Wren nest sites to examine parental prey delivery effort. As the birds came and went from their nests, the camera captured time-stamped images that showed exactly which food the …

Chemotaxis In Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells: Characterizing The Interaction Between Tff2 And Cxcr4, Michael Berger Apr 2019

Chemotaxis In Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells: Characterizing The Interaction Between Tff2 And Cxcr4, Michael Berger

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are a heterogenous population of immature myeloid cells. However, unlike the mature immune cells of the same lineage, MDSC have demonstrated the capacity to suppress the immune system. In previous studies, it has been demonstrated that MDSC accumulate in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of cancer patients. This makes MDSC a potent therapeutic target. A protein that aids in the protection of gastrointestinal mucosa called trefoil factor two (TFF2) activates signal cascades, although only recently has the link between TFF2 and the chemokine receptor CXCR4 been studied. The aim of this project was to characterize this signal-receptor …

Growing On A Scar: Population Genetics Of A Colorado Wildflower, Ace Spitzer Apr 2019

Growing On A Scar: Population Genetics Of A Colorado Wildflower, Ace Spitzer

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Speciation is a natural process in organisms caused by geographic isolation and adaptation to novel conditions. Human activities are a source for environmental changes in the air, soil, and waterways of an ecosystem. Organisms living around agricultural or industrial developments must adapt at a much faster rate than organisms subjected to natural selection pressures. Molecular biology technologies allow us to study genetic variation changes in populations subjected to human disturbances, with preliminary studies on plants showing greater genetic diversity in the genome, contrary to how organisms are expected to respond to anthropogenic pressures. Leaf tissue from the yarrow plant, Achillea …

Factors Influencing Swallow Bug (O. Vicarius) Populations Within Cliff Swallows Nests, Paul Mcphail Dec 2016

Factors Influencing Swallow Bug (O. Vicarius) Populations Within Cliff Swallows Nests, Paul Mcphail

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Hematophagous ectoparasites such as swallow bugs (Oeciacus vicarius) have been shown to have a profound negative impact on infested bird chicks, and one study shows that O. vicarius populations are positively correlated with large colonies. In this study, we investigated the abundance of O. vicarius and other arthropods within Cliff Swallow nests, and performed statistical analysis of the results to find any variables that correlated with O. vicarius population size. We expected the number of O. vicarius would be positively influenced by urban surroundings and large Cliff Swallow colony size, and that samples collected in the fall would be larger …

Joint Action Effects Of Emamectin Benzoate And Cypermethrin On The Marine Copepod Tigriopus Californicus, Lindsay Schultz, Michael Kelly Aug 2016

Joint Action Effects Of Emamectin Benzoate And Cypermethrin On The Marine Copepod Tigriopus Californicus, Lindsay Schultz, Michael Kelly

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This project examined the effect of two pesticides on the marine copepod Tigriopus californicus. The pesticides are emamectin benzoate and cypermethrin, which are commonly used in salmon aquaculture to treat the salmon for sea lice, a type of parasitic copepod. The results of this study indicate that these pesticides are toxic to the free-living T. californicus at very low dosage levels when used individually. When the pesticides are used in combination, the mortality rate is similar to when they are used individually, but there is an additional paralytic effect on the animals. All animals exposed to any of the pesticide …

Dominance Hierarchies In Horses: Comparing And Contrasting Different Methods For Assessing Hierarchies, Devyn Bailey Aug 2016

Dominance Hierarchies In Horses: Comparing And Contrasting Different Methods For Assessing Hierarchies, Devyn Bailey

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Understanding animal social structures is imperative when it comes to the care, housing and handling of large herd animals. Knowing how hierarchies are structured, along with environmental and physiological aspects that may affect them, will allow owners and breeders to house and care for their animals. The aim of my study was to better understand two methods used to assess dominance hierarchies in horses, Equus caballus, and to predict which method would be more useful for owners housing domestic horses. I designed an experiment where I compared a structured method, the paired feeding test, with behavioral observations from the …
