West Indian Manatee (Trichechus Manatus) Habitat Characterization Using Side-Scan Sonar, Mindy J. Mclarty Jan 2017

West Indian Manatee (Trichechus Manatus) Habitat Characterization Using Side-Scan Sonar, Mindy J. Mclarty

Master's Theses

In this study, the reliability of low cost side-scan sonar to accurately identify soft substrates such as grass and mud was tested. Benthic substrates can be hard to classify from the surface, necessitating an alternative survey approach. A total area of 11.5 km2 was surveyed with the sonar in a large, brackish mangrove lagoon system. Individual points were ground-truthed for comparison with the sonar recordings to provide a measure of accuracy. Five substrate types were identified: Dense seagrass, sparse seagrass, mangrove soil, mangrove soil with rock, and silt. A zoned benthic substrate map was created from the sonar recordings. …

Home Range And Habitat Use Of Santa Rosa Island Foxes (Urocyon Littoralis Santarosae), Elizabeth Marie Drake Mar 2013

Home Range And Habitat Use Of Santa Rosa Island Foxes (Urocyon Littoralis Santarosae), Elizabeth Marie Drake

Master's Theses

Island foxes (Urocyon littoralis) are currently listed as federally endangered on four of the six Channel Islands to which they are endemic. The Santa Rosa Island (SRI) population declined by 99% during the 1990’s due to non-native golden eagle (Aguila chrysaetos) predation and is currently the lowest fox population (~280) and density (0.86 foxes/km2) of any of the Channel Islands. The goals of this study were to assess new miniaturized GPS technology and to quantify home range and habitat use of the SRI population. This is only the second use of Global Positioning System (GPS) …

Breeding Habitat Structure And Use By Kansas-Occurring Black Rail, Stephanie A. Kane May 2011

Breeding Habitat Structure And Use By Kansas-Occurring Black Rail, Stephanie A. Kane

Master's Theses

Two subspecies of Black Rail Laterallus jamaicenis occur in the United States, and neither has been studied extensively. Of the two, the Eastern subspecies L. j. jamaicenis has a larger range, but has been studied to a lesser degree than the California subspecies (L. j. coturniculus Eastern Black Rail are known to breed at several locations in Kansas, but as in other inland populations, precisely where these individuals overwinter is unknown. Additionally, little information is available on characteristics of breeding habitat for inland Eastern Black Rail populations, and few studies have investigated the effect of habitat management techniques on these …

Growth And Food Habits Of Micropterus Salmoides In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, Charles H. Rawls Jr. Aug 1979

Growth And Food Habits Of Micropterus Salmoides In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, Charles H. Rawls Jr.

Master's Theses

Age, growth, and food habits of the population of Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass) in Westhampton Lake were studied from September to November 1978. Two year classes (0 and I) were identified by determining numbers of annuli on the scales of the fish. Growth data indicated that the bass attain a size of 254 mm (10 in.) near the end of their second summer. The length-weight relationship was log W = -4.6829 + 2.9153 log TL. The Fulton condition factor for the population was 1.40. Food habits were described by numerical and frequency of occurrence methods. Young of the year sunfish …
