The following recreational fisheries management package is a result of an extensive public consultation process. The package has been carefully developed to deliver the required reduction in catches. It is important to understand that each management measure contributes to the reduction in catches necessary to give these stocks a chance to rebuild and that no measure on its own will deliver the required reduction in catch.

This document details my proposed decisions regarding the new management arrangements for the West Coast and Gascoyne commercial “wetline” fisheries. Before finalising my position on the new management arrangements for these fisheries I invite any final comments on the proposed arrangements set out in this document. At its meeting of 7 April 1993 the Southern Demersal Gillnet and Demersal Longline Fishery Management Advisory Committee (hereafter called "the Committee) was advised of the Western Australian Fisheries Department's Research Division's concern over the status of shark stocks. All the data available indicate that whiskery sharks are severely over-exploited with stock levels declining by around 10% to 30% of original levels. Current levels of fishing effort are expected to cause the stock to decline further. Gummy sharks have high risk of over exploitation (stock has declined to 40% -50% of original levels.
