Investigations On The Vampire Moth Genus Calyptra Ochsenheimer, Incorporating Taxonomy, Life History, And Bioinformatics (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Calpinae), Julia L. Snyder

Open Access Theses

The seventeen species and two subspecies described in the genus Calyptra are known to be obligate fruit piercers, with some species being of economic importance. Males within the genus have not only been observed piercing their fruit hosts, but have also been documented to occasionally feed on mammalian blood. The genetic and ecological mechanisms contributing to host preference for either plant or vertebrate hosts in this lineage are unknown. Thus, the focus of this study was to investigate the chemosensory systems between and among Calyptra species exhibiting differential feeding strategies. Before investigating the chemosensory systems within Calyptra, the taxonomy …

Prediction Of The Protein Complex Assembly Pathway Using Multiple Docking Algorithm, Yoichiro Togawa Apr 2014

Prediction Of The Protein Complex Assembly Pathway Using Multiple Docking Algorithm, Yoichiro Togawa

Open Access Theses

Proteins often function as a complex of multiple subunits, and the quaternary structure is important for proper function. An ordered assembly pathway is one of the strategies nature has developed to obtain the correct conformation: studies have shown a relationship between the assembly pathway and evolution of protein complexes. Identification of the assembly pathway and the intermediate structures helps drug development as well. Therefore, elucidation of the assembly pathway of protein complexes is important for understanding biochemical processes central to cellular function. Recent studies have demonstrated the assembly pathway of a protein complex can be predicted from its crystal structure …

Lipidomic Analysis Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Soo Jung Ha Apr 2014

Lipidomic Analysis Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Soo Jung Ha

Open Access Theses

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is the most common and malignant form of the primary brain tumor. Due to its highly invasive nature, current treatment options have not been able to improve the survival rate in past 20 years. In order to discover GBM therapeutic targets, omics technologies have been widely used to identify potential biomarkers. ^ This research study focused on investigating lipid biomarkers of human GBM orthotopic mouse models employing mass spectrometry. Human tumor cell lines GBM10 and GBM43 were injected in the right cerebral hemisphere and flank sites in NOD/SCID mice (n = 10 mice per group). Left cerebral …
