Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the association of serum AMH and Renalase with the risk of preeclampsia thereby assessing them as screening tools, reducing the risk of gravid consequences of preeclampsia.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited n = 95 pregnant women between 14 and 32 gestational weeks. They were categorized as a) women with gestational hypertension (n = 45); b) women with pre-eclampsia (n = 20) and c) normotensive pregnant women (n = 30) according to the ACOG criteria. Anthropometrics data and blood and urine samples were collected. AMH and Renalase levels were measured …

Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury: Apoptotic, Inflammatory And Oxidative Stress Role Of Galectin-3, Suhail Al-Salam, Satwat Hashmi Oct 2018

Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury: Apoptotic, Inflammatory And Oxidative Stress Role Of Galectin-3, Suhail Al-Salam, Satwat Hashmi

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Background/aims: Myocardial reperfusion has the potential to salvage the ischemic myocardium after a period of coronary occlusion. Reperfusion, however, can cause a wide spectrum of deleterious effects. Galectin-3 (GAL-3), a beta galactoside binding lectin, is closely associated with myocardial infarction (MI), myocardial fibrosis and heart failure. In our study, we investigated its role in ischemia-reperfusion injuries (IR) as this phenomenon is extremely relevant to the early intervention after acute MI.
Methods: C57B6/J wild type (WT) mice and GAL-3 knockout (KO) mice were used for murine model of IR injury in the heart where a period of 30 minutes ischemia was …

Role Of Leptin And Dyslipidemia In Chronic Kidney Disease, Sabeela Noor, Faiza Alam, Syeda Sadia Fatima, Mahnur Khan, Rehana Rehman

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are at an increased risk of cardiovascular complications and plasma leptin level is elevated in cardio renal syndrome. We wanted to explore leptin levels in patients with different stages of CKD and find its association with risk of cardiovascular disease. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Nephrology Department of Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) from January 2014 to September 2014. Group I comprised of controls (GFR=116±8.3, n = 44) acquired from general population, CKD patients were grouped as II, III and IV respectively with GFR; 85.77±9.9 (n = 42), 53.84±9.9 (n=42) and 20.22±8.4 (n …

Biochemical parameters like tumour necrosis alpha, calcium, magnesium, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and vitamin D were measured by solid phase enzyme amplified sensitivity immunoassay method. SPSS 16 was used to analyse the data.
Results: Of the 146 women, 34(23%) were normal, 93(67%) were osteopenic and 19(13%) were osteoporotic. There was significant difference in mean body mass …

Gossypiboma Diagnosed Fifteen Years After A Cesarean Section: A Case Report, Abdul Rehman, Noor Ul-Ain Baloch, Muhammad Awais

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Gossypiboma, a retained surgical sponge, is a rare complication following any surgical procedure and is primarily a result of human error. Such patients often have vague clinical presentations and the diagnosis often comes as a surprise. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman who had a long-standing history of lower abdominal discomfort. She was diagnosed with a gossypiboma fifteen years after a cesarean section. All general physicians, surgeons and radiologists must be aware of this rare but clinically significant entity.

Culturable Aerobic And Facultative Anaerobic Intestinal Bacterial Flora Of Black Cobra (Naja Naja Karachiensis) In Southern Pakistan, Junaid Iqbal, Mehwish Sagheer, Nazneen Tabassum, Ruqaiyyah Siddiqui, Naveed Ahmed Khan Jan 2014

Culturable Aerobic And Facultative Anaerobic Intestinal Bacterial Flora Of Black Cobra (Naja Naja Karachiensis) In Southern Pakistan, Junaid Iqbal, Mehwish Sagheer, Nazneen Tabassum, Ruqaiyyah Siddiqui, Naveed Ahmed Khan

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Using morphological analysis and biochemical testing, here for the first time, we determined the culturable gut bacterial flora (aerobes and facultative anaerobes) in the venomous Black Cobra (Naja naja karachiensis) from South Asia. The findings revealed that these snakes inhabit potentially pathogenic bacteria including Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shewanella putrefaciens, Aeromonas hydrophila, Salmonella sp., Moraxella sp., Bacillus sp., Ochrobactrum anthropi, and Providencia rettgeri. These findings are of concern, as injury from snake bite can result in wound infections and tissue necrosis leading to sepsis/necrotizing fasciitis and/or expose consumers of snake meat/medicine in the community to infections.

Total Parotidectomy Under Local Anesthesia: A Novel Technique, Kamran Shahid, Bilal Karim Siddiqui, Muhammad Hammad Tahir, Salman Bin Ayub, Ghulam Murtaza Memon, Adnan Yousuf, Arif Hussain, Osmani, Abdul Karim Siddiqui Feb 2007

Total Parotidectomy Under Local Anesthesia: A Novel Technique, Kamran Shahid, Bilal Karim Siddiqui, Muhammad Hammad Tahir, Salman Bin Ayub, Ghulam Murtaza Memon, Adnan Yousuf, Arif Hussain, Osmani, Abdul Karim Siddiqui

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Parotidectomy is a common procedure usually done for a parotid mass necessitating a histological diagnosis. Operation is normally performed under General anesthesia with a nerve stimulator to facilitate facial nerve stimulation. We describe a new technique with reports of three cases, making total parotidectomy under local anesthesia possible. The ascending cervical branch of cervical plexus and the auriculotemporal nerve were anesthetized by bupivacaine 0.25% (2mg/kg) and lignocaine with adrenaline 7 mg/kg. Effective onset of anesthesia was within 15-25 minutes and the operations lasted between 2-3 hours without any complications. This offers advantage in high-risk patients where general anesthesia is contraindicated. …

Seven patients were also referred by the department of Nephrology, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, Pakistan. Patients' medical records were reviewed for demographic, clinical, and follow up data.
Results: There were total of nine patients identified …

Heterogeneity Of Methotrexate Binding In Human Colon Tumor Cells, M P. Iqbal, N Mehboobali, M A. Waqar, M Ahmed Jun 1991

Heterogeneity Of Methotrexate Binding In Human Colon Tumor Cells, M P. Iqbal, N Mehboobali, M A. Waqar, M Ahmed

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

[3H]-methotrexate binding at pH 5.0 and pH 7.2 by the cytosol of tumor tissues and the surrounding normal areas of the gastrointestinal tract of patients suffering from colon or gastric cancer has been used to identify in these cells the presence of a binder of methotrexate having low-affinity for this drug in addition to the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. Scatchard analysis of the [3H]-methotrexate binding data by a colon tumor sample also reveals that there are two binders of this drug present in the cytosol of these cells. The association constant (Kass) for one binder of methotrexate is = 5.6 x …
