This report summarizes data collected by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) monthly trawl survey cruises for January to December 1999. The trawl survey is a long-term, broad scope monitoring program. Its primary goal is to monitor juvenile abundance for marine and estuarine finfish and invertebrates. A major objective is to provide annual indices of juvenile abundance for recreationally, commercially, and ecologically important species of sufficient accuracy and precision for both immediate resource management needs and long-term understanding of environmental influences on fishery resources. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has conducted a bottom trawl survey of some fashion since 1955. Historically, sampling has occurred as mid-channel transects at fixed locations spaced at approximately five mile intervals. In the early 1970's, work was performed on the Mobjack Bay and Piankatank River using the standard 30 ft. fishing gear from a large research platform, with a 16 ft. gear towed from an outboard skiff or Chesapeake deadrise at shallow stations (:$; 12 ft.). The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has conducted a bottom trawl survey of some fashion since 1955. Historically, sampling has occurred as mid-channel transects at fixed locations spaced at approximately five mile intervals. During the 1970's, the need for a random stratified survey of the main stem Bay and tributaries was realized and subsequently implemented. This program had a very large spatial coverage in various depth strata, but was very limited in its temporal component. Sampling occurred on a semi-annual basis primarily in January and February, and again in July (Wojcik and Van Engel, 1988a.) Based on previous results …

Large populations of softshell clams persist only in relatively shallow, sandy. mesohaline portions of Chesapeake Bay. These areas are mostly in Maryland, but can also occur in the Rappahannock River. Virginia. In some other portions of the bay, especially polyhaline portions. sparse populations of soft shell clams persist subtidally. Restricted populations exist intertidally.

Softshell clams grow rapidly in Chesapeake Bay, reaching commercial size in two years or less. They reproduce twice per year, in spring and fall, but probably only fall spawnings are important in maintaining population levels. The hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria, is found along the eastern coast of North America from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Texas. In Chesapeake Bay the hard clam is restricted to salinities above approximately 12 ppt. The abundances and distribution patterns of hard clams in Chesapeake Bay are based on studies performed nearly 20 years ago - a more extensive survey of hard clam resources is due. Statements concerning long term trends in populations are not feasible.

The basic anatomy of hard clams conform to that of venerid bivalves. Hard clams grow to a maximum shell length (anterior-posterior dimension) of …

The James River is the primary source of seed oysters for planting private beds in the Chesapeake Bay. A sharp decline in setting rates after 1960 accompanied cessation of oyster culture on private beds in the lower sector of the river. These broodstocks were eliminated and the beds were barren after 1960. High salinities permitted a new oyster disease caused by Minchinia nelsoni (MSX) to make planting in the lower river hazardous because of high mortalities (Andrews, 1964 and in press).

Studies of larval transport mechanisms were begun in the James River in 1950, and extensive sampling was done from …

Otter trawl cruises were conducted off the middle Atlantic coast of the U. S. from 1971 to 1975. More than 50,000 specimens of demersal fishes were captured during this program at depths of 75 m to 3000 m. Species assemblages were distributed along a coenocline with bathymetric areas of rapid faunal change (anantoclines) and of more gradual faunal change (aganoclines). Between 75 and 3000 m anantoclines were found at 150 to 200 m, 400 to 600 m, 900 to 1000 m, 1350 to 1500 m, and 1900 to 2100 m. Ichthyoplankton sampling gear is reviewed and evaluated with emphasis on power plant impact assessment. Effects of biotic and abiotic factors on gear accuracy are discussed. Difficulties associated with obtaining representative samples from patchy population distributions are acknowledged. A listing of commonly used sampling gear has been compiled and indexed by ecosystem. Meter nets and variations of meter nets are the most widely used gear for sampling fish eggs and larvae. Comparative gear evaluation has been performed based on information compiled in the report. The Aquaculture Thesaurus consists of the descriptors used in entering material into the National Aquaculture Information System {NAIS). Terms have been arranged in a format similar to that used in the Thesaurus of Water Resources Terms published by the U. S. Department of the Interior.

The National Aquaculture Information System is a NOAA project which provides computer assisted access to a broad range of information on growing marine, brackish and freshwater organisms. It was developed to answer the need for a centralized source of information in the U.S., and anyone with a need for information on aquaculture can use it.
