T he results of recent investigations by VIMS and collaborating scientists in Massachusetts and New Jersey indicate that clam strains produced from brood stocks of South Carolina and Florida origin are more susceptible to QPX (Quahog Parasite Unknown) disease than clam strains originating from Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts brood stocks. During a 3-year study clam strains produced at VIMS from brood stocks originating from Massachusetts, New Jersey, Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida were grown at sites in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia and evaluated for survival, growth, condition and QPX disease susceptibility. In the mid-1960s the bay scallop, Argopecten irradians, was identified by scientists at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) as having culture potential for Virginia waters. Mike Castagna at the VIMS Wachapreague Laboratory demonstrated the biological feasibility of culturing bay scallops from egg to market size within a one year period. At that time, culture for scallop meat production was not economically favorable and the need for better grow-out technology precluded further development of this industry in Virginia. Clam culture in-Virginia has recently received a ·great deal of attention due to the declining production of wild fishery stocks, and to the apparent success of some commercial clam farms. A 1994 survey of Virginia aquaculture by the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service identified hard clams as the most valuable cultured product in the Commonwealth; production in 1993 exceeded $11 million in gross sales.

This is a critical period for the future of the east coast oyster industry. This report documents the dramatic decline in industry output which has been the impetus for a publicly funded program to "revtalize" the industry. Oyster biologists argue over the severityy of the decline and the cause, and also the potential remedies. Should non-native oysters, specifically Crassostrea gigas, be introduced into the region to replace the native oyster production? This publication is devoted to predictions of the probability of invasion by the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha (and the quagga mussel, Dreissena sp.) to specific bodies of water in Virginia. Probability of invasion is divided into risk and susceptibility. Risk refers to the chance, relative to other sites, that a body of water will be inoculated with Dreissena, in sufficient number to establish a population. Inoculation can occur by natural dispersal, but in the mid-Atlantic region is most likely to-occur though accidental introduction by humans, especially via boat traffic.
