Survey Of Leased Oyster Grounds Adjacent To The James River Bridge At Newport News, Virginia, Dexter Haven, Paul Kendall Dec 1972

Survey Of Leased Oyster Grounds Adjacent To The James River Bridge At Newport News, Virginia, Dexter Haven, Paul Kendall

Reports

This report describes the condition of leased oyster' grounds in the area which is adjacent to the proposed construction site of the second James River Bridge. This survey was accomplished by taking numerous samples of the bottom with the aid of patent tongs and counting numbers of living oysters and hard clams. The quantity of shells taken.was noted and observations were made on the nature of the· bottom. During this study, which extended frorri 31 July to 11 August, 1972, nine individual tracts of leased bottom were investigated, and ~222 samples of the bottom were collected (Table 1).

A Check List Of The Biota Of Lower Chesapeake Bay : With Inclusions From The Upper Bay And The Virginian Sea, Marvin L. Wass Oct 1972

A Check List Of The Biota Of Lower Chesapeake Bay : With Inclusions From The Upper Bay And The Virginian Sea, Marvin L. Wass

Reports

The biota of Chesapeake Bay seems generally less known than that of New England and much of our West Coast. The present work attempts to mollify this discrepancy. The compilation has been revised and expanded to include plants and vertebrates. Inclusion of creatures not strictly aquatic but which may occasionally found their areas flooded by tidal waters has necessitated subjective declsions of limitation.

Includes:

  • Lower Plants
  • Wetland and Dune Plants
  • Phylum Protozoa
  • Free-living Invertebrates (except Protozoa)
  • Fishes of Chesapeake Bay and the Adjacent Coastal Plain
  • Herptiles of the Maryland and Virginia
  • Coastal Plain Birds Dependent on Open Water or Wetlands …

Hampton Roads Tunnel Corridor Survey Report For The Virginia Department Of Highways, Dexter S. Haven, Joseph G. Loesch

Reports

A survey of a proposed bridge tunnel corridor across Hampton Roads from Newport News to Portsmouth was undertaken by the Virginia ·Institute of .Marine Science at the request of the Virginia Department of Highways. The objective was the estimation of the densities of hard clams, oysters and bottom shell.

Biology And Utilization Of Anadromous Alosids: Annual Progress Report (October 1, 1971 - September 30, 1972), Jackson Davis, Walter J. Hoagman, John V. Merriner, Richard A. St. Pierre, Woodrow L. Wilson

Reports

Fishing effort for herring and shad has been stable for the past three years in the lower Chesapeake Bay and tributaries. River herring catch in 1972 was slightly above the 1971 landings but continued to be very low.

River herring landings in U.S. waters have declined as the c.atch has been increased by non-nationals. The catch per unit of effort has decreased from 122.5 in 1965 to 30.3 in 1972 in Virginia waters. Total mortality rates for river herring were without significant trend from 1965-1971.

Twice as much towing effort was expended in 1972 as in other years. The abundance …

The Active Pound Net Fishery In Virginia 1959-1972, Woodrow L. Wilson, Jackson W. Davis Jan 1972

The Active Pound Net Fishery In Virginia 1959-1972, Woodrow L. Wilson, Jackson W. Davis

Reports

An aerial survey of pound nets was conducted in the lower Chesapeake Bay and Virginia rivers from 1959 through 1972. The Potomac River was included from 1965 through 1972. Surveys were conducted monthly, excluding January, during this period.

The pound net is one of the most important fishing gears operated in Virginia waters. A brief description of the net is given. The number of pound nets in the fishery fluctuated from 1959 to 1966, but has been steadily declining since 1966. The term "active pound net" refers to a stand that has net hanging, and actively fishing at the time …

Feasibility Of Increasing Striped Bass Populations By Stocking Of Underutilized Nursery Grounds : Annual Progress Report 1971-1972, John V. Merriner, Walter J. Hogman Jan 1972

Feasibility Of Increasing Striped Bass Populations By Stocking Of Underutilized Nursery Grounds : Annual Progress Report 1971-1972, John V. Merriner, Walter J. Hogman

Reports

Numerous estuaries in the lower Chesapeake Bay region and coastal Virginia possess physical, chemical and biological properties favorable· to their use as nursery grounds for striped bass. Many of them, however, are not so utilized because of the absence of associated spawning grounds. This project was designed to investigate the feasibility of stocking such underutilized nursery grounds as a management device, while monitoring population parameters such as age composition, mortality rates and relative abundance of year classes .

Economic Potential Of Clam Operation, Michael Castagna Jan 1972

Economic Potential Of Clam Operation, Michael Castagna

Reports

The following estimates are based on the premise that the clam operation will be in an area where clam culture techniques will work. This means the seawater available t_o the hatchery is of suitable quality for this operation at least during the period that the clam larvae and juveniles are in that system. The food growing method (Glancy method) has been successfully used from Canada to Florida so should not be a problem.

A Study Of The Zooplankton Of Lower Chesapeake Bay : Nsf-Rann Annual Report, 1972, George C. Grant Jan 1972

A Study Of The Zooplankton Of Lower Chesapeake Bay : Nsf-Rann Annual Report, 1972, George C. Grant

Reports

Studies of zooplankton are necessary to any broader investigation of aquatic ecosystems. In estuaries such as the Chesapeake Bay, zooplankton function as both detritus feeders. and primary consumers of phytoplankton. Some of them, including chaetognaths, medusae and large copepods, are members of a higher trophic level. The diversity of zooplankton, especially in neiitic areas, contributes to the complexities of' such studies.

The present project was initiated wholly as a result of the interest of the National Science Foundation in Chesapeake Bay and the establishment of the Chesapeake Research Consortium. The design of the research was planned to integrate with ongoing …

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Ii Virginia Waters, Pamela S. Tennyson, Susan O. Barrick, Frank J. Wojcik, William J. Hargis Jr. Jan 1972

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Ii Virginia Waters, Pamela S. Tennyson, Susan O. Barrick, Frank J. Wojcik, William J. Hargis Jr.

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems carne the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.
