Anastrepha is the most diverse and economically important genus of Tephritidae in the American tropics and subtropics. The striking morphology of the third instars of Anastrepha caballeroi Norrbom, Anastrepha crebra Stone, Anastrepha haplacantha Norrbom & Korytkowski, Anastrepha korytkowskii Norrbom, Anastrepha nolazcoae Norrbom & Korytkowski, and three newly discovered and as yet formally unnamed species (Anastrepha sp. Peru-82, Anastrepha sp. nr. protuberans, and Anastrepha sp. Sur-16), and the more typical morphology of Anastrepha aphelocentema Stone, are described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Carotenoids serve various ecological roles in animals including coloration, immune responses, and vision. Carotenoid-derived coloration is greatly emphasized in the literature, particularly relating to mate choice and aposematic warning. However, the trade-offs between the color and non-color functions of carotenoids are not thoroughly explored. In the redheaded pine sawfly (Neodiprion lecontei), some larval populations have yellow pigmentation, using carotenoids derived from their diets for aposematic warning coloration. Other larval populations are white in color, having genetically lost the ability to produce the yellow pigment. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has a long history as a research model for studies on behaviour and group dynamics. When individuals are grouped in an environment and resources decrease, then they may behave co-operatively with one another or antagonistically compete. Hamilton’s Law states that if the benefit of helping a related individual out-weighs the cost to its direct fitness, then the individual’s indirect fitness will increase when they help their kin compared to helping an unrelated stranger. Yet it is unknown whether kinship mediates larval behaviour to encourage co-operation and/or lessen antagonistic behaviours between consanguineous individuals. In this thesis …

Animal Sentience

I focus on the possibility of sentience in zebrafish larvae. The evidence here prompts two intuitive reactions that are difficult to reconcile: the reaction that larvae, if sentient, should be protected in some way, and the reaction that larvae, if capable of nociception, should be used as replacements for adults. Both reactions are reasonable, but they can be reconciled only by constructing a framework for assigning degrees of protection in proportion to degrees of sentience.

We describe and illustrate the external morphology, oral disc, chondrocranium, and internal oral anatomy of Leptodactylus caatingae larvae. We analyze the internal oral anatomy using scanning electron microscopy of a larva in Gosner, stage 38 and chondrocranial anatomy is reported for Gosner stage 34. The tadpole at Gosner stage 38 has a globular body shape with low tail fins and a ventral oral disc bordered by two rows of marginal papillae on most of the disc, except for the anterior labium and a medial portion of the posterior labium where papillae are simple; a wide rostral gap is present, labial …

Headwater stream systems are productive habitats that are often at risk of human perturbation, and it is crucial that ecologists understand natural patterns and processes within these ecosystems. Using a multi-scale approach, I investigated factors influencing habitat associations of Ambystoma barbouri (streamside salamander) and Eurycea cirrigera (southern two-lined salamander) in a relatively undisturbed stream network in central Kentucky. I used likelihood ratio G-tests to identify associations between species and mesohabitat types (i.e., runs, riffles, and pools). The Structure And Defensive Efficacy Of Glandular Secretion Of The Larval Osmeterium In Graphium Agamemnon Agamemnon Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Jagannath Chattopadhyay

Histomorphological study of the larval (final instar) osmeterium gland in Graphium agamemnon agamemnon Linnaeus shows that each fully protruded Y-shaped osmeterium is composed of 2 elongated hollow tubular arms, which arise from a basal peduncle. The surface of the osmeterium has irregular folds, and papillae arise from some cells. There is an oval opening (gland pore, structurally less complicated than in other evolved species) in the proximal second seventh of the segment on each tubular arm on its posterior face. Patterns of larval amphibian distribution and abundance have historically been ascribed to direct predation. However, adult oviposition site selection is an alternative mechanism that can produce identical patterns and significantly influence community assembly. Although such behavioral habitat selection has been documented in several amphibian species whose larvae lack particular anti-predator defenses, the sensitivity of adult amphibians in detecting predator cues and avoiding these habitats has not yet been determined. If larval survivorship is greatly reduced in sites containing predatory fish, selection to detect and avoid habitats with low fish densities should be strong. Studies On Sediment Toxicity Bioassays Using Chironomus Thummi K., 1911 Larvae, Levent Bat, Mehmet Akbulut

The acute toxicity of zinc, copper and lead to freshwater dipteran Chironomus thummi larvae was evaluated by static bioassays, calculating the LC_{50} (lethality concentration for 50%). Mortality increased with increasing concentrations of zinc, copper and lead. The LC_{50}s of Zn, Cu and Pb for survival were 11.2, 19.1 and 14.3 µg g^{-1}, respectively. The results indicated that Zn had the greatest toxicity, followed by Pb and Cu. Individual weight increased with increasing Cu, Zn and Pb concentrations. The results are discussed and compared with those of other studies.

This study was conducted to determine optimum salinity for the larval growth, survival and development of Penaeus indicus. For this, PZI (protozoea 1) larvae were stocked in 2-L round bottom glass flasks in two replicates at 20, 25, 30 and 35 ppt salinities and were reared on live diets until PL (postlarvae) stages. The feeding ecology of preflexion and flexion-postflexion spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) and Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) larvae was evaluated and compared. Nutritional condition of spot larvae from the Gulf of Mexico was high, with no larvae classified as starving. This was probably due to an inability to sample starving larvae at sea because of predation pressure or was indicative of favorable feeding conditions and an absence of starvation in the collection area. In spite of morphological similarities between the species, significant differences in body shape existed.

Se presentan las características que permiten diferenciar las larvas de Phyllomedusa iheringi de las de otros anuros que habitan en nuestro territorio, junto con algunas observaciones sobre la biología de esta especie poco conocida en el Uruguay.

SUMMARY:

The characteristics that differentiate the larvae of Phyllomedusa iheringi from other anurans that live in Uruguay are presented here. Some observations on the biology of this species are also recorded.
