The Coccidian Parasites (Protozoa, Sporozoa) Of Rodents, Norman D. Levine, Virginia Ivens

Harold W. Manter Laboratory: Library Materials

This monograph summarizes the known information on taxonomy, morphology, life cycle, hosts, location in the host, pathogenicity, geographic distribution, and cross-transmission studies of the 196 named species of coccidia of rodents. These include 176 species of Eimeria, 9 of Isospora, 3 of Wenyonella, 2 each of Cryptosporidium and Klossiella, and 1 each of Dorisiella, Caryospora, Tyzzeria, and Klossia. In addition, similar data are given for those forms for which insufficient information is available to justify assigning them names.

Eimeria, which is the most common genus, has been described from only 15% …

A Comparative Population Study Of Small Vertebrates In The Uranium Areas Of The Upper Colorado River Basin Of Utah, Wilmer W. Tanner May 1965

A Comparative Population Study Of Small Vertebrates In The Uranium Areas Of The Upper Colorado River Basin Of Utah, Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

This paper constitutes a terminal report to the United States Atomic Energy Commission for contract AT(11-1)819. It provides not only a faunistic and floristic study of areas having a high and low surface radiation, but also includes a consideration of their general ecology. Major emphasis is placed on the variation of the external characteristics of the small vertebrates of these areas with a statistical analysis of those characters examined in the lizards. The study was conducted in southeastern Utah (Tanner 1963, see map) from October 1959 through 1964, and was conducted as a test of the variation effects of natural …

Observations On The Biology, Anatomy, And Morphology Of Otobius Lagophilus Cooley And Kohls, C. Selby Herring, D Elden Beck Feb 1965

Observations On The Biology, Anatomy, And Morphology Of Otobius Lagophilus Cooley And Kohls, C. Selby Herring, D Elden Beck

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The principal objective of this study is to bring up to date information on geographic distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host-parasite relationship of O. lagophilus in western North America. Notes on life history and disease transmission potential are included.

Data and information were obtained from three sources: (1) natural history collections and field records at Brigham Young University over the past twenty years; (2) the Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Hamilton, Montana; and (3) published literature.

All available collection records are presented in a table from which information on geographic distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host-parasite relationship was extracted. O. lagophilus is known …

Tenebrionidae Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site, Vasco M. Tanner, Willis A. Packham Feb 1965

Tenebrionidae Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site, Vasco M. Tanner, Willis A. Packham

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The intent of this study conducted over a period of three years was to ( 1 ) provide descriptions of the species of tenebrionids found at the Nevada Test Site, (2) determine their relative abundance, (3) determine their seasonal activity, and (4) ascertain their plant community relationships.

A total of 14,650 beetles representing 46 kinds of tenebrionids was collected with sunken can traps, by hand, and ultra-violet light. Collections were made at regular intervals in the following plant communities: Larrea-Franseria, Lycium, Atriplex-Kochia, Grayia-Lycium (disturbed and undisturbed areas), Salsola, Coleogyne, Pinyon-Juniper, and Mixed.

The data obtained from this study indicate that …

Experimental Studies On Habitat Preference And Thermoregulation Of Bufo Americanus, B. Hemiophrys And B. Cognatus, John R. Tester, A. Parker, Donald B. Siniff Jan 1965

Experimental Studies On Habitat Preference And Thermoregulation Of Bufo Americanus, B. Hemiophrys And B. Cognatus, John R. Tester, A. Parker, Donald B. Siniff

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper reports on responses lo habitat and thermoregulotion exhibited by three species of toads, Bufo omericanus, B. hemiophrys and 8. cognalus, under artificial conditions. The response of the toads to sparse, medium, and dense vegetative cover was investigated by establishing artificial cover types in a sheet-metal enclosure. Each of the three species spent more time in the dense cover than i11 sparse or medium cover. A second experiment to determine if the toads would be attracted by odor to samples of mud, water, and vegetation from their respective ranges suggested that the toads moved randomly to the habitat samples. …

Review Of Echinococcus Species In South Africa, Anna Johanna Maria Verster Jan 1965

Review Of Echinococcus Species In South Africa, Anna Johanna Maria Verster

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

1. The nominate subspecies of E. granulosus (Batsch, 1786) is redesignated from the type locality, Europe.

2. Five subspecies of E. granulosus are described from South African carnivores: E. g. granulosus, E. g. africanus, E. g. felidis, E. g. lycaontis and E. g. ortleppi.

3. E. g. granulosus has so far only been recovered from the Transvaal; E. g. ortleppi appears to be restricted to the Transvaal; E. g. africanus occurs in the Orange Free State and the Transvaal; E. g. lycaontis and E. g. felidis like their definitive hosts are restricted to the Transvaal.

4. …
