Turkish Journal of Zoology

To date, 13 species of Ponto-Caspian amphipods have been reported from the inland waters of Turkey. Two, probably overlooked species, Echinogammarus trichiatus and Dikerogammarus villosus, are here recorded for the first time from this country. Due to the atypical morphology, the identity of E. Trichiatus was also verified with molecular methods, based on the mtDNA COI barcode. Both species, along with five other co-occurring Ponto-Caspian amphipods, were collected from Lake Durusu in September 2007. Our finding reveals high diversity of amphipods in this water body. It also presents the southernmost known localities of both species, and expands the checklist of …

Gammarus Komareki Aznavensis Subsp. Nov., A New Amphipod Subspecies From Iran (Amphipoda: Gammaridae), Murat Özbek, Hamidreza Rasouli

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A new subspecies of freshwater amphipod, Gammarus komareki aznavensis subsp. nov., collected from Aznav County (Khalkhal-Ardabil), northwestern Iran, is described and illustrated. The new subspecies belongs to the Gammarus pulex-group and has characteristic features similar to Gammarus komareki. Shorter flagellum of antenna 1, kidney-shaped and bigger eyes, more setose outer margin of the exopodite of uropod 3, and shorter endopodite of uropod 3 are the most obvious features that differ from G. komareki. A detailed morphological description and illustrations of the new subspecies are given and differences from related species are discussed.

Distribution Of Littoral Benthic Amphipods Off The Levantine Coast Of Turkey With New Records, Ahmet Kerem Bakir, Tuncer Katağan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A total of 143 species belonging to Amphipoda were found at the depths between the supralittoral zone and 200 m along the Levantine coast of Turkey. Ten species (Ampelisca spinifer, Cheiriphotis mediterranea, Deutella shieckei, Ericthonius argenteus, Gammaropsis crenulata, Gammaropsis sophiae, Isaea montagui, Ischyrocerus inexpectatus, Liropus elongatus, and Melita bulla) were recorded for the first time in Turkey, while 69 species were new for the Levantine coast of Turkey. Platorchestia platensis was the only species observed out of water (supralittoral). The other encountered species showed distribution in various depths of between 0 and 200 m. The biogeographical categories of determined species …

Contribution To The Knowledge On The Distribution Of Malacostraca (Crustacea) Species Of Central And Southern Anatolia, With Some Ecological Notes, Murat Özbek, Süleyman Balik, Esat T. Topkara

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In order to contribute to the knowledge on the distribution of Malacostraca (Crustacea) species inhabiting freshwaters of central and southern parts of Anatolia, Turkey, sampling was performed at 69 stations between 29 May and 4 June 2006 and between 19 and 25 June 2006. Malacostraca specimens were found at 26 out of the 69 stations and were represented by 11 taxa (Gammarus agrarius, Gammarus argaeus, Gammarus anatoliensis, Gammarus balcanicus, Gammarus mladeni, Gammarus pseudosyriacus, Echinogammarus antalyae, Asellus aquaticus, Palaemonetes antennarius, Atyaepyra desmaresti orientalis, and Astacus leptodactylus). The zoogeographical distribution and ecology of the determined taxa are presented herein.

On The Occurrence Of Niphargus Valachicus Dobreanu & Manolache, 1933 (Amphipoda, Gammaridae) In The Western Black Sea Region Of Turkey, Mehmet Akbulut, Murat Sezgi̇n, Mehmet Çulha, Levent Bat

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the characteristic features, distribution and ecology of the amphipod Niphargus valachicus E. Dobreanu & C. Manolache, 1933 sampled at Sırakaraağaçlar Stream of Sinop, flowing into the Black Sea, are given. Four taxa of Niphargus genus, freshwater Amphipoda fauna have been identified in Turkey. In addition to these, Niphargus valachicus is a new record for the Turkish freshwater fauna.
