Efficacies Of Fenbendazole And Albendazole In The Treatment Of Commercial Turkeys Artificially Infected With Ascaridia Dissimilis, Jessica Perkins, Tom Yazwinski, Chris Tucker

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The goal of this research was to determine the extent of resistance that turkey roundworms, Ascaridia dissimilis, have developed to anti-parasitic chemicals used in commercial poultry operations. Roundworm infections in turkeys have resulted in monetary losses for the poultry industry for years, generally due to poor feed conversion. The infection itself is subclinical and many turkeys have a light to moderate worm burden. Since parasitisms are light, this leads to the infections being noticed only during processing. Ascaridia dissimilis infections consist of adult worms and developing larvae with the latter comprising most of the worm burden and causing the most …

The Effect Of Natural Antioxidants On Conjugated Linoleic Acid Yield During The Photoisomerization Of Soy Oil Linoleic Acid, Camille Schaffner, Andy Proctor

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is known to be effective in avoiding many obesity related diseases. Conjugated linoleic acid is a product of ruminant fermentation and 3.4 g/day are needed to obtain the clinical benefits. However, it is difficult to obtain sufficient CLA to realize these benefits from a healthy diet containing dairy and beef products, without increasing levels of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat. A 20% CLA soy oil with low saturated fat and no cholesterol has been produced by photoisomerization of linoleic acid in the triacylglyceride oil. Further increasing the CLA yields has been possible by addition of …

Equidae Milk Promises Substitutes For Cow And Human Breast Milk, Akbar Nikkhah

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Milk is the most nourishing natural biofluid. Milk bioactives contribute significantly to meeting nutrient requirements while minimizing the risks of cancers, traumas, and metabolic complexities. Some mothers may not be able to feed their infants breast milk for a prolonged period. Very young infants and the elderly may be intolerant to cow milk and its proteins and cholesterol. Thus, viable substitutes are needed to complement human breast milk in such cases. This review describes the most significant research findings to date and highlights the special nutritional and health properties of donkey and mare milks as promising substitutes for cow and …

Biotin Affects The Immune Response Of Piglets Inoculated With Porcine Circovirus Type 2, Chen Hong, Zhang Keying, Ding Xuemei, Chen Daiwen

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Weanling crossbred pigs were used in a 5-week trial to evaluate the effects of biotin and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) challenge on serum cytokine concentrations and humoral immunoresponse. Although not significant, there was a trend towards reduced interferon-\gamma concentration in the challenged pigs compared to the controls, especially at 14 and 21 days postinoculation (dpi). Biotin supplementation with 50 or 200 µg/kg biotin improved these levels, with higher doses producing an earlier and stronger response. Although the magnitude of the immune response was small and inconsistent, diet supplementation with 50 or 200 µg/kg biotin appeared to increase serum immunoglobulin …

Growth Performance And Intestinal Histomorphology In Egg-Type Growing Roosters Fed Recycled Food Waste Containing Effective Microorganisms, Jassada Ruttanavut, Koh En Yamauchi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

To evaluate the effects of a recycled food waste (eco-feed) containing effective microorganisms derived from Japanese mugwort silage juice (EJP) on growth performance and intestinal histomorphology, 48 male chickens of 14 days old were divided into 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% EJP diet groups. At 20 weeks of age, body weight gain was similar in the 20% EJP group but lower in the 40% and 60% EJP groups (P < 0.05) compared to that in the control group. The relative total intestinal length and weight tended to be long and heavy, respectively, in the 20% and 40% EJP groups, but short and light, respectively, in the 60% EJP group. Although numerous villi were found in the jejunum and ileum of all EJP groups, the villus height and size observed in these groups were smaller. Cell area and cell mitosis number in the duodenum and jejunum of all EJP groups were lower than those of the control group (P < 0.01). Epithelial cells on the villus apical surface of the 20% EJP group showed morphology similar to that of cells on the villus apical surface of the control group in all of the intestinal segments. The growth performance data suggested that EJP could be incorporated at up to a level of 20% in chicken diets. The intestinal histological results suggested that long-term feeding of an EJP diet at up to the 40% level may result in a long and heavy intestine by increasing the numbers of miniature intestinal villi.

Effects Of Zinc On Growth Performance And Biochemical Parameters Of Piglets, Kun-Kun Wang, Hua-Wei Cui, Jian-Yi Sun, Li-Chun Qian, Xiaoyan Weng

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of zinc on growth performance, activities of enzymes, and concentrations of hormones were investigated in this study. Crossbred (Duroc × Landrace × Large White) piglets (initial body weight: 26.66 ± 2.45 kg) were randomly assigned into 4 groups receiving a basal diet and were supplemented with 60, 300, 1000, or 3000 mg/kg of zinc (as ZnSO_4^.7H_2O). The results showed that supplementation of zinc at 3000 mg/kg increased (P < 0.05) the average daily feed intake, weight gain, gain/feed, and relative organ weight, and promoted the activities of alkaline phosphatase and Cu-Zn superoxide (P < 0.05) by 84.17% and 49.86%, respectively, when compared with the control group. It also led to higher hepatic metallothionein content and tissue zinc concentration (P < 0.05) than in the control group. Furthermore, the concentrations of insulin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the 3000 mg/kg group were increased (P < 0.05) by 55.19% and 26.53%, respectively, compared to the control group. The present study suggests that pharmacological dietary supplementation of zinc increased growth performance, activities of enzymes, tissue zinc concentrations, and plasma insulin and NPY concentrations. Key words: Zinc, growth performance, tissue zinc concentration, enzyme activity, hormone concentration, piglet

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Postmortem spermatozoa recovery is an important tool for harvesting germplasm from genetically meritorious animals and endangered species. The principal motive of this study was to find out whether ram spermatozoa within epididymides kept at 4 °C for 48 h retain their quality in terms of progressive motility, viability, and acrosomal status. Twenty-four testicles with attached epididymides were collected with 8 samples each processed at 0, 24, and 48 h of storage. A good number of motile spermatozoa could be recovered from epididymides by incision method with up to 48 h of storage, although their quality declined significantly (P < 0.05) as postmortem storage time increased (motility: 83.33 ± 1.05%, 63.33 ± 2.47%, and 44.17 ± 1.53%; and epididymal sperm output (millions): 3500.00 ± 73.97, 1220.00 ± 1.01, and 666.67 ± 19.78 for 0 (control), 24, and 48 h, respectively). Viability and intact acrosomes (%) were also acceptable, although they decreased significantly with up to 24 h of storage. In conclusion, ram epididymides could be stored at 4 °C for 48 h when epididymal spermatozoa cannot be immediately harvested and cryopreserved.

Prevalence And Patterns Of Antimicrobial Resistant Of Fecal Escherichia Coli Isolates Among Pigs On Eight Farrow-To-Finish Farms And Their Production Environments In Shandong Province, China, Hongchao Zhou, Lin Liu, Zhaofang Tian, Wenjuan Zhang

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The main objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Escherichia coli isolates in feces of pigs and their production environments on farms. A total of 560 isolates of Escherichia coli, from 112 samples obtained from weaner and finisher pigs, feed, water, and house sparrows on 8 farrow-to-finish farms, were tested for susceptibility to 16 antimicrobials. The prevalence of resistance varied widely (0.0% to 69.5%) among the antimicrobials tested. From the tested swines, 75.75% of the isolates were resistant to one or more antimicrobials. Resistance was significantly more frequent (P = 0.005, P < 0.01) in swine isolates compared to those from feed, water, and sparrows and significantly more frequent (P = 0.007, P < 0.01) in weaner pigs compared to finisher pigs. The findings indicate that resistance to a broad range of antimicrobials was prevalent among fecal E. coli isolates of swine on the study farms. Fortunately, E. coli was not isolated from the feed, water, and house sparrows.
