Assessment Of Applications For Authorisations For Aquaculture And Pearling In Coastal Waters Of Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development Aug 2017

Assessment Of Applications For Authorisations For Aquaculture And Pearling In Coastal Waters Of Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development

Fisheries administrative guidelines

Under s.246 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA) and under s.24 of the Pearling Act 1990 (PA) (collectively, the Acts), the Minister for Fisheries (Minister) may issue guidelines for the administration or enforcement of the Acts.

This Administrative Guideline (Guideline) aims to streamline the process for assessment of applications under s.92 and s.97 of the FRMA for aquaculture licences and leases and under s.23 of the PA for pearl oyster farm leases; and certain applications to vary a pearling lease or aquaculture licence.1 The Guideline is intended to provide guidance to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional …

The Effects Of Crossbreeding And Low Fish Meal Diets On Growth-Related Traits In Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha), Katarina H. Doughty May 2017

The Effects Of Crossbreeding And Low Fish Meal Diets On Growth-Related Traits In Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha), Katarina H. Doughty

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Growth rate is the most important trait that can be manipulated to create more efficient aquaculture. Crossbreeding, where different populations are bred, has the potential to increase performance through release from inbreeding depression. I crossed a farm population of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) with seven wild populations, then compared growth rate, feed conversion efficiency, swimming speed and metabolic rate between the crossbred and original farmed lines. Crossbreeding resulted in increased growth rates, but had no effect on the other traits. I next evaluated the feasibility of using a diet that replaced fish meal with corn gluten meal and …

The Role Of Phototaxis In The Initial Swim Bladder Inflation Of Larval Yellow Perch (Perca Flavescens)., Christopher Ryan Suchocki May 2017

The Role Of Phototaxis In The Initial Swim Bladder Inflation Of Larval Yellow Perch (Perca Flavescens)., Christopher Ryan Suchocki

Theses and Dissertations

The North Central Regional Aquaculture Center has designated the yellow perch (Perca flavescens) as a high priority species for culture. The demand for this species is high and it is estimated that the market could readily consume 50 to 100 million pounds per year. Tank culturing of yellow perch has several advantages over pond culture and this method has been growing in popularity, but is currently held back by problems in larval development. One of these problems, failed swim bladder inflation (SBI), is frequently reported in the literature as a bottleneck in the culture of many fishes. Unsuccessful SBI increases …

Ecosystem Metabolism Modeling Of Estuaries In Maine: Using Dissolved Oxygen As A Tool For Aquaculture Site Assessment, Katherine Miller May 2017

Ecosystem Metabolism Modeling Of Estuaries In Maine: Using Dissolved Oxygen As A Tool For Aquaculture Site Assessment, Katherine Miller

Honors College

The net primary productivity (NPP), also known as the net ecosystem metabolism, of an estuary is a value indicative of the growth and activity of an estuary’s primary producers, relative to the metabolic activity of its consumers. When NPP is high, estuaries exhibit autotrophic conditions that have the capacity to support fruitful bivalve aquaculture. For oyster farmers, the ability to monitor an estuary’s NPP would allow them to predict and prepare for seasonal changes to oyster growth that result from changes to their phytoplankton food source and access to dissolved oxygen (DO). Not only would this aid farmers on site …

Maine Infectious Salmon Anemia Virus Control Program Standards, Christopher Bartlett Jan 2017

Maine Infectious Salmon Anemia Virus Control Program Standards, Christopher Bartlett

Maine Sea Grant Publications

The United States Department of Agriculture, (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services, (APHIS), Veterinary Services, (VS) Infectious Salmon Anemia Virus Control Program Standards, hereafter referred to as the Standards, establish recommended procedures for the prevention and containment of Infectious Salmon Anemia virus (ISAV) in farm-raised Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The Standards provide guidelines for producers, APHIS-accredited veterinarians, other fish health personnel, laboratory personnel, and regulators. The eligibility of Atlantic salmon producers affected by ISA in Maine to receive indemnity is based, in part, on compliance with these Standards, and upon availability of any indemnity funds …

Effects Of Nonaerated Circulation Water Velocity On Nutrient Release From Aquaculture Pond Sediments, Xiangju Cheng, Dantong Zhu, Xixi Wang, Deguang Yu, Jun Xie Jan 2017

Effects Of Nonaerated Circulation Water Velocity On Nutrient Release From Aquaculture Pond Sediments, Xiangju Cheng, Dantong Zhu, Xixi Wang, Deguang Yu, Jun Xie

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Sustaining good water quality in aquaculture ponds is vital. Without an aerator, the dissolved oxygen in ponds comes primarily from mass transfer at the water-ambient atmosphere interface. As sediment can seriously affect water quality, this study used indoor experiments to examine the nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) release mechanisms and fluxes from sediment in aquaculture ponds with moving water but no aeration. The results showed that the ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) concentration in the overlying water was inversely proportional to flow velocity and that a higher flow velocity tended to result in a lower concentration in the overlying water, a …

Impact Of Aquaculture On The Livelihoods And Food Security Of Rural Communities, Rajee Olaganathan, Alicia Tang Kar Mun Jan 2017

Impact Of Aquaculture On The Livelihoods And Food Security Of Rural Communities, Rajee Olaganathan, Alicia Tang Kar Mun

Publications

Aquaculture production has prospered rapidly since the 1970s and is considered as a part of the rural development program in many countries. The impacts of aquaculture on the rural communities in terms of livelihood and food security are assessed in this paper. Aquaculture contributes to the livelihood of the poor through improved employment and income. Aquaculture creates job opportunities for rural communities, especially for illiterate women to earn side income for the household. With increased financial ability, household manage to reflect stronger purchasing power and have better access to the resources. However, there is a controversy among the researchers whether …

An Evaluation Of Nitrogen Supplementation And Processed Soy Fractions On The Performance Of Cultured Fishes, Brandon M. White Jan 2017

An Evaluation Of Nitrogen Supplementation And Processed Soy Fractions On The Performance Of Cultured Fishes, Brandon M. White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

World population growth has resulted in an increased demand for a sustainable food supply. This rapid growth coupled with an increased per capita consumption of seafood, has resulted in many of the world’s marine fisheries being over-exploited in an effort to meet the global demand for seafood. Aquaculture has attempted to fill the supply and demand gap created by the dwindling supply of fish in the world’s oceans. Fishmeal (FM) has traditionally been the primary protein ingredient in aquafeeds fed to farm-raised fish, however its unstable supply and increasing price have driven researchers to identify alternative protein sources. Soybean meal …
