Extensive description of the Virginia oyster resource and history of its utilization has been given by Haven, Hargis and Kendall (1981), and more recently reviewed by Hargis and Haven (1988). These contributions, among many others, describe a state of continuing decline. The James River, Virginia has served as the focal point for the Virginia oyster industry for over a century, being the source of the majority of seed oysters that were transplanted for grow-out to locations within the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay and much further afield in the Middle Atlantic states (Haven et al, 1981 ). Haplosporidium nelsoni is a protistan pathogen of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica, and has contributed to the decline of the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay. From comparison of the sequence data of the 16S-like rDNA of H. nelsoni with those of Minchinia teredinis and other related organisms, 2 oligonucleotides which were specific to H. nelsoni and suitable for use as PCR primers were identified. These primers amplified a 564 base pair fragment of the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene of H. nelsoni, but did not amplify genomic oyster DNA or the SSU rRNA genes of the haplosporidians Haplosporidium costale, …

Annual indices of juvenile abundance have been generated from trawl survey data for several species of key recreational importance in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay (spot, croaker, weakfish, summer flounder, black sea bass and striped bass, white and channel catfish) and four species of secondary importance (scup, white perch, northern puffer, and silver perch) for the period 1988-1995. No species has shown a continuous trend during the seven year period, although several species have revealed declines (spot, scup y-o-y white perch, northern puffer) or increases (Atlantic croaker and striped bass) in recent years. The susceptibility of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica to infection by the protozoan parasite Perkinsus marinus is influenced by temperature. Because of the crucial roles of heat shock proteins in cellular thermal tolerance and in host-parasite adaptations in other species, we compared the in vitro heat shock responses of cultured P. marin us and of oyster hemocytes. The parasite and host heat shock proteins were different in size and in immunochemical specificity. In addition, the thermal threshold for inducing the response was higher for P. marinus acclimated to the same temperature as the oysters. The results suggest that EI marinus …

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has conducted a trawl survey dating back to 1955. Over these forty years methods and objectives have varied according to funding sources and state and/or federal mandates. The present thrust of the program is to provide juvenile indices of relative abundance for recreationally, commercially, and ecologically important finfish and invertebrates. These measures of juvenile abundance are widely used as a key element in the management of the Atlantic States' coastal fishery resources. Estimates of juveniles (age-0) have proven to be a reliable and early indicator of future year-class strength. A review of previously …

Between 1930 and 1939, average annual landings of Crassostrea virginica from Chesapeake Bay was 32 million pounds (meat weight). During the period 1980-88, average annual landings declined to 14.6 million pounds. In 1990, landings declined to less than 3 million pounds of meats. It has been this consistent downward trend in landings, particularly since 1983, that has concerned that National Marine Fisheries Service, various state agencies, and members of the oyster industry. We quantified variability in daily settlement of blue crab postlarvae (megalopae) on identical artificial settlement substrates at up to 6 sites concurrently over a broad geographic expanse (similar to 1300 km) of the western North Atlantic (Delaware-South Carolina, USA). The 4-year study encompassed the blue crab recruitment season (generally July-November) from 1989-1992. Regional settlement was characterized by: (1) constant low levels of daily settlement punctuated by significantly non-random, episodic peaks of variable duration and intensity with peaks collectively accounting for at least half the total annual settlement at a site; (2) spatial and temporal variability leading to a general lack …

The efficacy of artificial settlement substrates in quantifying relative rates of settlement of blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, postlarvae (megalopae) was examined. The technique has been widely used to assess settlement at local (Chesapeake Bay) and broad geographic scales (Atlantic and Gulf Coasts). This analysis examined differences in settlement between two configurations of substrates and two depths of deployment, in relation to lunar day, month, year and hours of flood tide occurring at night. We examined a corollary to the hypothesis that striped bass regulate the blue crab population in Chesapeake Bay by preying on juveniles, an expected inverse correlation between striped bass and blue crab abundance. Abundance indices based on Virginia striped bass young-of-the-year beach seine data (1980-1992) were constructed for fish ages 1 - 8, and for the Virginia resident stock component, ages 1 - 5. Fishery-independent, pound net data for fall and spring were also used to construct indices of striped bass abundance in Rappahannock River (1986-1993). Weakfish, Cynoscion regalis, were collected in 1989-93 from commercial catches in the Chesapeake Bay region, and special collections of large fish were made in Delaware Bay. Ages were based on sectioned otoliths. Most weakfish were 200-600 mm TL and ages 1-4 years. Maximum age was 17 years from a 1985 Delaware Bay fish. Maximum current observed ages were 12 years in Chesapeake Bay and 11 years in Delaware Bay. However, fish older than age 6 were rare in both areas. There was no evidence that Delaware Bay fish reached a larger maximum size or maximum age than Chesapeake Bay fish. …

The blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, is found in all major coastal habitats along the mid-Atlantic, South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, including large embayments, barrier island-lagoonal systems, and coastal marsh, mangrove and seagrass systems. Ecologically important, blue crabs may control abundances of other estuarine benthic species (Hines et aI., 1990). The blue crab also supports valuable commercial and recreational fisheries from New Jersey to Texas; commercial landings of 249.3 million pounds of hard blue crabs in 1993 had a dockside value of 126.6 million dollars (NMFS, 1994). Clam culture in-Virginia has recently received a ·great deal of attention due to the declining production of wild fishery stocks, and to the apparent success of some commercial clam farms. A 1994 survey of Virginia aquaculture by the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service identified hard clams as the most valuable cultured product in the Commonwealth; production in 1993 exceeded $11 million in gross sales.
Be wary of reports that clam farming is easy and guarantees financial rewards. Farming clams is much more complicated than throwing clams overboard and returning a few years later to harvest them for market. The financial risks …

The blue crab, Callinectes sapiclus, fishery has been one of the most important fisheries of Virginia. The importance of the fishery in terms of commercial activities has substantially increased in recent years in response to declining resource levels of American Oyster, Crassostrea virginica, and a growing international and domestic demand for soft crabs, female hard crabs, and crab meat.

Filtration by suspension-feeding bivalves affects water quality and the postulated impacts include increased light penetration and enhanced benthic primary production. Such system-level predictions are extrapolated fiom still water experiments which neglect the effects of flow, seston composition, turbulent mixing and refiltration by oysters within groups. Flume experiments were used to investigate the effects of varying flow speed and seston composition on filtration capacity of oysters. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science has conducted a monitoring program of the juvenile finfish in the Chesapeake Bay tributary rivers of Virginia since 1955, the striped bass spawning rivers since 1967 and the main stem Chesapeake Bay since 1988. These data are used to develop juvenile indices for several recreationally important species including spot, croaker, summer flounder, weakfish, black seabass and striped bass. The indices are important as both an index of recruitment success and effectiveness of management actions and are used in interstate Fishery Management Plans (FMP's) by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and the Chesapeake …
