Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 1221. Student paper titled “Moonshining” in which Virginia Antonini details the process of distilling moonshine from harvest to bottling. Antonini describes the equipment used to produce moonshine and includes several stories told by her informant, a man only referred to as “Jim,” about his methods and various run-ins with the law. The author also includes her mother’s wine recipe and additional “home brew” stories.

Student paper titled “Winemaking: The Old and New Way” in which Charles Genau details the process of wine production from harvest, to fermentation, bottling, and distribution. Genau compares and contrasts methods of traditional winemaking with contemporary approaches. He also gathered his information from two winemakers of different ages and ethnic backgrounds. The paper contains two illustrations of the winemaking process.

The integration of crop and livestock systems has been recognized for its potential to reduce the environmental impacts associated with agriculture and improve farmer livelihoods. However, to date, most research has focused on the integration of cattle into crop and pasture systems. Here we examine the integration of sheep into vineyards and assess farmers’ perceived benefits and costs of the practice. Viticulture expansion has led to significant land use change in recent years and new environmental challenges, particularly with respect to herbicide use. In the summer of 2014, Linfield College and Whitman College archivists Rachael Woody and Melissa Salrin teamed up to document the history of the Walla Walla wine industry. While collaboration in the archives isn’t new, Woody and Salrin offer their perspective on the benefits of such partnerships even when the institutions wish to acquire the same materials and work with the same donors. The authors argue this project can serve as a blueprint for other repositories that wish to document community history and/or work collaboratively with a competing institution. Bosnia-Herzegovina (B-H) remains one of the most underdeveloped countries on the European Continent yet it holds great potential as a tourist destination for outdoor adventurers, history enthusiasts, and now, wine connoisseurs. The southern part of this merged nation has always been an area of wine production, but the industry has been slow to develop into a net exporter of its wines. The author and many of the industry’s supporters believe that it would be more lucrative to follow in the footsteps of its western neighbor, Croatia, and develop the wine industry through wine tourism.
