Effects Of Exercise When Transitioning From Free Choice Tall Fescue (Lolium Arundinaceum) Grass Diet In Late Summer To Free Choice Tall Fescue Hay Diet In Late Fall On Plasma Fructosamine Concentrations, Insulin Levels, Body Weight, And Body Condition Scores Of Stock Horse Mares And Gelding, Riley Brown
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Equine exercise may influence a horse’s metabolic and physiological functions. Studies can help to prove this linkage, and to better understand the nutritional requirements of the horse. The parameters that are being evaluated are plasma-fructosamine concentrations, insulin levels, body weight (lbs.), and body condition score (BCS) as a measurement of obesity. Eight horses used in this study were split into two groups; Worked horses were exercised three times a week while the unworked horses were not exercised. All eight horses were fed an ad libitum diet of tall fescue grass and hay for 127 days.
Forage samples were collected to …
Annotating Gene Expression And Regulatory Elements In Tissues From Healthy Thoroughbred Horses And Identifying Candidate Mutations Associated With Perosomus Elumbis In An Angus Calf, Alexa Barber
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Genome annotation has a direct impact on the success of genomic studies. Transcriptome analyses and chromatin immunoprecipitation and sequencing (ChIP-seq) have been used to functionally annotate genomes. These methods can identify protein-coding genes, non-coding transcripts, and cis-regulatory elements across the genome. The primary objective of the first study was to functionally annotate the equine genome through the assessment of nine tissues: adipose, brain, heart, lamina, liver, lung, skeletal, muscle, testis, and ovary. In the first project, 150 bp, paired-end RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) libraries were generated in stallion tissues and compared to previously generated mare RNA-seq libraries to quantify variation in …
Aging Horses By Their Teeth, Karl Hoopes, Patricia Evans, Nancy Jack
Aging Horses By Their Teeth, Karl Hoopes, Patricia Evans, Nancy Jack
All Current Publications
This publication tells how to pinpoint a horses age, within a fairly narrow range, by examining its teeth. Being able to pinpoint age can be of use to owners of unregistered horses or horses whose age is unknown for any reason. Many health and nutrition management decisions are directly related to age and dental wear, making it even more important for all horse owners to have a general understanding of how a horse’s mouth changes with age. From a historical perspective, up until recently when organized associations started keeping birth dates on registered horses, most horse professionals took great pride …
Price Determinants Of Stock-Type Horses Sold At Public Online Auctions, Michelle Kibler, Jada M. Thompson
Price Determinants Of Stock-Type Horses Sold At Public Online Auctions, Michelle Kibler, Jada M. Thompson
Faculty Publications - Agriculture
There is a shift in livestock auction sales in consolidation of live markets and movement toward virtual marketplaces. We examine buyer preferences for nonracing stock-type horses sold through virtual auctions to better understand how animals are sold and their valuation. A shift towards online sales of equine has impacted the number of potential buyers through increased exposure to sale horses. Using data collected from online auctions, we estimate factors influencing propensity to sell as well as price determinants in this market platform. We find many factors contribute to the likelihood of a horse selling and to the final sale price.

Body Condition Scoring For Horses, Karl Hoopes, Eric Thacker, Linden Greenhalgh
All Current Publications
Horse enthusiasts are often concerned about their horse’s health, appearance and performance. A major key to accomplishing these three goals is to keep your horse at a desirable body condition, or degree of fat cover. However, being able to accurately evaluate a horse to tell if they are over or underweight has been a subjective practice for many years. As with all aspects of horse ownership, horse owners have different opinions on what is an ideal body weight for an individual horse. Also, because horses come in all shapes and sizes, many horse owners are not able to objectively evaluate …

West Nile Virus (WNV) was first introduced to the United States in 1999. Since then, the disease has spread to all of our equine populations. Spread by mosquitos from infected birds to horses, WNV can cross the blood-brain barrier to cause an encephalomyelitis. Clinical signs can include weakness, ataxia, muscle twitching, coma, and even death. Prevention, by vaccination and reducing mosquito numbers, is much more effective than treating the disease.

Sport horse disciplines include dressage, eventing, and hunter-jumper horses. In Kentucky, sport horse enthusiasts are fortunate enough to be near the Kentucky Horse Park, a park known worldwide for its shows and courses. In 2010, the park hosted the World Equestrian Games, marking the first time that the World Equestrian Games had been held outside of Europe. Kentucky Equine Survey
The last thorough equine inventory in Kentucky was undertaken in 1977, leaving the state’s equine industry with 35 years of changes, growth and contraction that were neither measured nor analyzed.
In response to these needs, in 2011, the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Horse Council, with support by industry organizations spearheaded by the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers’ Club and Kentucky Thoroughbred Association/Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, and initial support from the University of Louisville, succeeded in securing funding for a large-scale, comprehensive equine survey upon which future industry plans could be built. This was …
