The Farm Service Agency guaranteed loan program is an important source of credit for family-sized farming operations in Arkansas and the other states of the U.S. This program provides loan guarantees to borrowers who are otherwise unable to obtain credit from traditional lenders at reasonable rates and terms. This study identifies those factors related to the program’s loss claim rate performance over the years fiscal 1989 through 1998 using state-level data from forty states. For both the operating loan and farm ownership loan programs, farm operator financial variables, interest rates, and commercial bank characteristics are found to be statistically significant …

Price premiums for organic crops drew the attention of increasing numbers of farmers in the Northern Great Plains and Upper Midwest during the 1990s. Continuing low prices for crops grown with 'conventional' farming methods during the late 1990s caused a growing number of farmers to explore the possibilities of switching to organic methods and obtaining organic certification. As part of the sustainable agriculture research program in the Economics Department at South Dakota State University (SDSU), we have been comparing 'organic' and 'conventional' crop prices over the past six years. Many farmers in Arkansas and other parts of the United States are experiencing financial stress. The purpose of this special report is to highlight the situation of Arkansas farmers and to offer an outlook for 2001. The report emphasizes the production, price, income, financial, farmland value, and interest rate outlook for Arkansas farmers and considers the impact of the macro economy on agriculture. In addition, price risk management and pre-harvest marketing strategies for farmers are presented.

Historical Cattle And Beef Prices, Seasonal Patterns, And Futures Basis For Nebraska, 1960-2000, Dillion Feuz, Paul Burgener, Tom Holman

Prices for different classes of feeder steers and heifers, slaughter steers and heifers, slaughter cows and bulls are reported in Tables 1-23. These prices are analyzed in the text of this publication. Discounts and premiums for various weights, grades and sex are identified. Each price series is analyzed to determine long term price trends and seasonal patterns. Stocker, feeder and live cattle basis are calculated using USDA monthly average reported cash prices and the monthly average futures prices, Tables 14- 15, 23. Carcass cut-out values are reported in Tables 24-26.

There are several economically significant crops grown in the Nebraska Panhandle. There are, collectively, in excess of 2 million acres in corn, wheat, sorghum, proso millet, dry edible beans, sunflowers, and alfalfa hay in the area. There are some unique geographic, ecological and demographic features that influence crop prices in the area. This publication provides a basic price analysis for the crops in the Nebraska Panhandle to help growers to be able to make informed marketing and production decisions.
