Changes In Eastern South Dakota Crops Patterns: 1950s To 1990s, Thomas L. Dobbs, Lisa M. Carr

This report contains background data for a study on possible impacts of the 1996 Farm Bill ("Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act of 1996") on crop system diversity. The study, being conducted by the Economics Department at South Dakota State University (SDSU), is focused on the 7-county area of eastern South Dakota shown in the map on the following page. This area constitutes a major portion of the Big Sioux River drainage area in South Dakota. The aquifer underlying the Big Sioux River in these counties provides drinking water for a significant portion of the State's population. Therefore, agricultural practices …

Synchronizing Estrus And Improving Subsequent Production And Performance With Prostaglandin F2 Alpha And Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin, Bryan Kutz
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Two-hundred-seventy-two sows were utilized in two trials to evaluate the effects of prostaglandin and pregnant mare serum on reducing weaning to estrus interval, increasing the degree of estrus synchrony and improving fertility at estrus resulting in improved pregnancy rates and subsequent litter performance. Sows were randomly allotted to treatments. In trial 1, sows were assigned to one of three treatments: T1 (n=18; l0mg of PGF2α /hd 24-48 hrs. after parturition), T2 (n=20; lOmg of PGF 2 α /hd at weaning) and controls (n=20). No differences (P>.05) were observed for survival rate and 21D litter wt. among treated and the …

Data from usable pesticide survey responses was entered in a computer database and checked for entry errors. A database record was stored for each unique combination of grower, crop, pesticide, and target pest(s). All character data (such as brand names) were standardized for consistent usage and spelling. Specific methods used to enter and standardize data and to perform calculations are described below:

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
The effectiveness of management practices in improving quality of runoff from agricultural land areas has been reported based primarily on results from plot- and field-scale studies. There is limited information available on watershed scales, particularly when the dominant agricultural land use is pasture. The objective of this study was to determine whether a program of Best Management Practice (BMP) implementation in the Lincoln Lake watershed of northwestern Arkansas was effective in reducing storm stream flow concentrations and mass transport of nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphorus (PO4-P), total phosphorus …

Development Of New Generation Cooperatives, Mike Turner
Development Of New Generation Cooperatives, Mike Turner
Cornhusker Economics
Dr. Mike Cook, Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri and his students have interviewed over 50 newly created agricultural cooperatives. The purpose of this study was to determine the steps taken to establish a new business. In each case the newly formed business was to establish a value-added opportunity for agricultural producers. The steps taken included the following:
Factors Affecting The Coordination Of Agricultural Production And Marketing, Jeffrey S. Royer
Factors Affecting The Coordination Of Agricultural Production And Marketing, Jeffrey S. Royer
Cornhusker Economics
Agricultural markets depend considerably less on open market transactions than 40 years ago. Increasingly, the production and marketing of agricultural products have been coordinated by forward contracting, production and marketing contracts, and vertical integration. The degree to which these alternative marketing mechanisms have been employed varies across commodities and products. Production contracts, marketing contracts, and vertical integration dominate in several livestock markets, including broilers, turkeys, eggs and milk, and in most specialty crop markets, including fruits, vegetables and sugar beets. Market transactions have continued to be more important for field crops and the cattle and hog markets although contract production …
