Estimating Commercial Expansion From Irrigation Development In The Oahe Unit, John Thompson, Ottar Nervik Nov 1953

Estimating Commercial Expansion From Irrigation Development In The Oahe Unit, John Thompson, Ottar Nervik

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Commercial activity in an economy that is predominantly agricultural is very sensitive to changes in fanning conditions. It is generally agreed by businessmen in agricultural areas that the success of their business operation is largely dependent upon the number and prosperity of farmers in their trade areas. For this reason business men often encourage proposals to increase the number of farms in their trade areas and support measures designed to improve the economic position of farmers. In South Dakota, where rainfall is considered a limiting factor in agricultural production, considerable interest has been taken in irrigation as a, means for …

Economic Analysis Of Forage Production And Utilization In Dakota And Dixon Counties, Nebraska, Howard W. Ottoson Nov 1953

Economic Analysis Of Forage Production And Utilization In Dakota And Dixon Counties, Nebraska, Howard W. Ottoson

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Soil erosion remains a serious problem on many Nebraska farms despite programs of financial assistance, technical aid, and education by several national and state agencies. One reason that soil conserving adjustments in land use have not been made by farmers is that considerable uncertainty surrounds the economics of soil erosion control on the farm level. This study is an attempt to increase knowledge and reduce some of the uncertainty with regard to the economics of erosion control in a specific area.

Farm Labor, Power And Machinery Performance For Selected Operations Under Dryland And Irrigated Conditions In Central South Dakota, James Ulvilden

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The problems of farm managers are everlasting. They are constantly in the process of examining alternative methods of production and alter native combinations of resources in an attempt to attain a higher and more stable income. For this farm planning, a vast amount of physical data on the cost and returns of alternative plans is needed. It is important that the physical data be as accurate as possible, because the farm plan is no better than the information upon which it is based. Technological progress has been very rapid in agriculture and thus it is important to keep up with …

Achieving Farm Ownership In South Dakota Through The Farm Ownership Program Of The Farmers Home Administration, Canute M. Johnson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The desire for secure tenure in ownership of land has given rise to the associated ideal of the family farm. Implementation of this ideal has been one aspect of political and governmental agricultural policy through out our national life. Although federal agricultural policies and legislation have not always been consistently directed' toward this end, Congress has frequently extended federal assistance in one form or another in support of this ideal. Federal assistance for this purpose has most often come during periods of agricultural distress when demands upon Congress for such assistance have been great. Currently, the Farmers Home Administration's Farm …

Farm To Retail Price Spreads, Edward Dailey Jun 1953

Farm To Retail Price Spreads, Edward Dailey

SDSU Extension Circulars

he differences between the farm value and the retail cost of farm-food has long been a sore point with both consumers and producers. Whenever food prices rise noticeably consumers are inclined to believe that farmers are receiving the benefit. Farmers look at the prices in the towns and cities and then at the prices they are paid and wonder who gets the difference. Higher consumer incomes and prices paid to let farmers during recent war years have let the controversy die down somewhat, but know that prices are declining old queries are urgently renewed.

Control Household Insects, John A. Lofgren May 1953

Control Household Insects, John A. Lofgren

SDSU Extension Circulars

The development and general acceptance of the new insecticides has greatly helped housewives in their battles with insects found in the home. Yet the use of these chemicals does not rule out the importance of sanitation and good housekeeping in preventing the establishment of these pests. Sanitation is a basic principle of pest control. Insects found in South Dakota homes destroy and contaminate foods and ruin fabrics. Some attack our dwellings and other buildings; others bite or annoy humans, carrying diseases and causing irritation or secondary infections. The presence of other insects merely constitutes a nuisance. Even the most well-kept …

Hay Stack Movers For South Dakota, Ted Welchart Apr 1953

Hay Stack Movers For South Dakota, Ted Welchart

SDSU Extension Circulars

Farmers and ranchers whose average hay production exceeds ,350 tons per year have been faced with a serious labor shortage .and are in need of a means of cutting the cost of production. As a result, a new method commonly called hay sledding has been developed. Hay sledding first began in the sandhills of Nebraska. This method spread to many surrounding areas when the application of power winches made it possible to use three-plow, and in some cases two-plow tractors, for this operation.

Today's Storage, Isabel Mcgibney Mar 1953

Today's Storage, Isabel Mcgibney

SDSU Extension Circulars

Plans for a livable home provide for adequate storage. Plenty of good storage space will save time and energy for the family and will simplify home life. Most houses built fifty or more years ago have very few closets. Many of these houses are still being used and need more storage space. The trend is for more built-ins-many and different kinds of closets, cabinets, chests and storage walls. Some of these storage walls are portable but look built-in. Whether you are building new, remodeling, or trying to make your home more livable, plan for lots of good storage. It may …

Shelterbelts For South Dakota, E.K. Ferrell Mar 1953

Shelterbelts For South Dakota, E.K. Ferrell

SDSU Extension Circulars

Tree plantings will make· your farm home and its surroundings a more pleasant and comfortable place to live. Tests have shown that a good shelterbelt can cut your fuel bill 32%. Snowdrifts can be kept out of your farm yard and driveways by planting trees in the right places. Livestock make better gains on less feed when protected from cold winter winds. Your garden and orchard will be much more successful protected from wind. Shelterbelts slow down the speed of the wind for a distance of about 20 times the height of the shelterbelt. In other words, a shelterbelt 30 …

Debeaking Poultry To Control Cannibalism And Featherpicking, Boyd Bonzer, Glen Hart

SDSU Extension Circulars

Debeaking is the practice of taking off part of the upper beak of a bird. This removes the part they pinch and tear flesh with, making it extremely difficult for them to be cannibalistic. The process can be accomplished with an electric debeaker, using a hot blade that cauterizes the wound as it cuts, preventing excessive bleeding.

Potatoes, John Noonan Feb 1953

Potatoes, John Noonan

SDSU Extension Circulars

Potatoes, a low cost energy food, were first mentioned in the chronicles of the Spanish conquerors of Peru around the year 1586. These Spanish sailors took the tubers to Spain and gradually they were . grown all over Europe. They were not popular at first, but by the 18th century became a staple part of European diet. Now, potatoes are one of the most important food crops of Europe, and they are grown in nearly every country in the world. In former years, potatoes were grown on most farms in South Dakota and by many small growers, but in the …

Commercial Fertilizers For Winter Wheat In Relation To The Properties Of Nebraska Soils, R. A. Olson, H. F. Rhoades

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

It is the purpose of this bulletin to report the investigations that have been made correlating soil properties and fertilization practices with yields of winter wheat. Since the success or failure of fertilization practices is so dependent on specific soil conditions, an attempt has been made here to further characterize the major soils of the different sections of the state which are devoted to wheat production and to analyze fertilizer practices and results in relation to the soil properties determined. The data are summarized for the four sections of the state designated as southeastern, east-south-central, west-south-central and western Nebraska. These …
