Two problems for developing economies confronted with food shortages are (1) how to acquire sufficient food and still stabilize food prices in the short-run and (2) how to increase food production and realize food self-sufficiency in the long-run. Solving these two problems is often considered a precondition to achieving steady economic growth and industrialization. An Economic Profile Of Farms And Ranches In South Dakota, Herbert R. Allen

This publication is in response to numerous" questions regarding the number of farms in different size groups within the State of South Dakota. Particular emphasis is placed upon identification of farms under economic size classifications. Data are presented by areas of the state and by counties. Data has been obtained from the 1949, 1959 and 1969 Census of Agriculture. Data on the economic characteristics of farm families is not readily available and it was therefore determined that census data on farms (as distinguished from farm families) was the most useful kind of data for identification of any economic profile.
