Energy Conservation With Irrigation Water Management, Robert Hill May 1999

Energy Conservation With Irrigation Water Management, Robert Hill

All Current Publications

Irrigators in Utah experienced rapidly increasing energy costs from the mid 1970s to the late 1980s. These costs remain relatively high. Those who are pumping from deep wells are particularly interested in ways to cut back on energy use without doing away with profitability or production

How Good Is Your Water Measurement?, Robert Hill May 1999

How Good Is Your Water Measurement?, Robert Hill

All Current Publications

Accurate water measurement is essential to maintaining equity of water delivery within an irrigation company or water districts. Good management of our scarce water resource is dependent upon quantifying supplies and uses with accurate measurement techniques. State water rights adjudication and management procedures often require installation of water measurement devices and keeping records of flows.

Managing To Reduce Nitrate Leaching: What Is In It For The Farmer?, Gilbert D. Miller, Jay C. Andersen

All Archived Publications

Nitrates leached into groundwater may be associated with the following: (1) methemoglobinemia (blue baby) in humans and other mammals; (2)cardiovascular collapse and shock in horses; (3) possibility of cancer (EPA); and (4) eutrophication of water bodies (IFIA) when nitrate contaminated groundwater reaches surface water through wells or springs. Nitrate leaching is not only a possible source of environmental damage but also the loss of an input before it is used in production.

Herbicide Control Of Tall Larkspurs On Mountain Rangeland, M.H. Ralphs, D.B. Nielsen, J.O. Evans, C.A. Call

Archived Agriculture Publications

Tall larkspurs kill more cattle on mountain rangelands than any other plant or disease. Tall larkspurs are principal components of tall forb communities and occur in patches associated with snow drifts in mountain big sagebrush, aspen and subalpine plant communities. Controlling larkspur patches can substantially reduce cattle deaths (3). Larkspur will never be eradicated, but if its density could be reduced to where a cow could not eat enough larkspur, fast enough, death losses can be reduced.
