The results of the fourth year of a five year research and development project to develop soil management practices and cropping systems to prevent waterlogging and increase the productivity of waterlogged lands in Western Australia. The concept of raised beds was used to alleviate or prevent waterlogging.

The project aim was to map the distribution of waterlogging occurrences relative to soil type and climate; to develop soil, water and crop management practices applied to the concept of raised beds to alleviate or prevent waterlogging; to establish the economics of raised bed farming, relative to geographic location and waterlogging frequency.

This report has been produced to provide more detail on the land capability assessments presented in the Wellington-Blackwood Land Resources Survey (Tille 1996). In that report, the land capability of each of the soil-landscape subsystems has been summarised with a brief description. Capability ratings are provided here for each of the map units (including subsystem phases) which appear on the two map sheets (Tille et al. 1996) accompanying the Wellington-Blackwood Land Resources Survey.

The Camballin Irrigation Area was the first large scale rice growing area in Western Australia. It was hoped Camballin would develop into a highly productive irrigation area. The Department of Agriculture was directly involved in the area between 1958 and 1970. The report summarizes the research carried out during the period which paralleled the commercial operation. The trials were designed to solve the specific cropping problems encountered over the period.
