Interpretive Summary: The conversion of grasslands to shrublands in the western United States and in arid regions throughout the world is a serious concern to livestock producers and ecologists. This process of desertification not only reduces available forage for livestock and wildlife, but also leads to increased soil erosion and reduced biodiversity. These shrubs often contain chemicals that make them unpalatable to browsing animals. We have been conducting a long-term study on the impact of volatile plant chemicals such as terpenes on shrub consumption by livestock. Colorado Potato Beetle Resistance To Insecticides, Andrei Alyokhin, Mitchell Baker, David Mota-Sanchez, Galen Dively, Edward Grafius

Andrei Alyokhin

The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), is widely regarded as the most important insect defoliator of potatoes. Its current range covers about 16 million km2 in North America, Europe, and Asia and continues to expand. This insect has a complicated and diverse life history, which is well-suited to agricultural environments, and makes it a complex and challenging pest to control. Dispersal, closely connected with diapause, feeding, and reproduction, allow the Colorado potato beetle to employ "bet-hedging" reproductive strategies, distributing its offspring in both space (within and between fields) and time (within and between years). The Colorado potato beetle played …

Household's Olive Oil Consumption Preferences Socioeconomic And Demographic Differences, Gulgun Yildiz Ti̇ryaki̇

Dr. Gülgün YILDIZ TIRYAKI

Present study indicates specific consumer characteristics that affect consumer preferences for virgin, refined and blend olive oils. The findings of the study suggest that socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of household and household head such as household income, household size, education, age and gender of household head, household with working wife, residential areas (rural-urban), and regional differences were statistically significant factors and play an important role on olive oil consumption choices among Turkish households. Because olive oil production and manufacturing firms are increasing very rapidly in Turkey, the results of this study provide some relatively new information about consumer olive oil …
