2021 Seedless Pickling Cucumber Variety Trial, Ben Phillips, Jessica Good Dec 2021

2021 Seedless Pickling Cucumber Variety Trial, Ben Phillips, Jessica Good

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

A pickling cucumber variety trial was planted at the Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center (43.399097, -83.694497, Frankenmuth, Michigan). Bejo (BJ), Nunhems (NU), Rijk Zwaan (RZ), and Sakata (SK) seed companies donated parthenocarpic (seedless) varieties for mechanical once-over harvest. The top five varieties each had Total Percent Recovery scores of 100%. When arranged in order of their highest combined clean yields of the most profitable fruit sizes (2B + 3A + 3B), they were NU 2106 (711 bu/a), NU 2105 (699 bu/a), RZ 16 (639 bu/a), RZ 11 (446 bu/a), and BJ Aristan (303 bu/a).

Indiana ranks sixth in cantaloupe production in the US. A total of 1,800 acres of cantaloupes were planted in Indiana with a production value of $8.6 million in 2018 (USDA 2021). Melon produced in Indiana is primarily eastern-type cantaloupes. Traditional eastern-type cantaloupes have less pronounced netting, larger fruit size, softer flesh and shorter shelf life compared with western-type cantaloupes. They are harvested at quarter-slip to full-slip stage, and require frequent harvest. Recently, extended shelf life varieties have been developed and are becoming attractive in the eastern market. This variety trial included 11 traditional eastern-type cantaloupes, as well as extended shelf-life …

Arkansas Wheat Performance Tests 2020-2021, J. F. Carlin, R. D. Bond, D. E. Moon, R. B. Morgan

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Wheat variety performance tests are conducted each year in Ark- ansas by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences. The tests provide informa- tion to companies developing varieties and marketing seed within the state and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating variety recommendations for small-grain producers. The tests are conducted at the Northeast Research and Extension Center at Keiser, the Vegetable Substation near Kibler, the Lon Mann Cotton Research Station near Marianna, the Jackson County Extension Center near Newport, the Pine Tree Research Station near Colt, …

Soil moisture deficiency is a major factor in determining crop yields in water-limited agricultural production regions. Evapotranspiration (ET), which consists of crop water use through transpiration and water loss through direct soil evaporation, is a good indicator of soil moisture availability and vegetation health. ET therefore has been an integral part of many yield estimation efforts. The Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) is an ET-based crop stress indicator that describes temporal anomalies in a normalized evapotranspiration metric as derived from satellite remote sensing. ESI has demonstrated the capacity to explain regional yield variability in water-limited regions. However, its performance in some …

Does Integrating Crops With Livestock Production Impact Soil Properties And Crop Production?, Lindsey Anderson May 2021

Does Integrating Crops With Livestock Production Impact Soil Properties And Crop Production?, Lindsey Anderson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Re-integrating crop and livestock production through cover crop (CC) and corn residue grazing could efficiently utilize resources and ensure profitability while improving environmental quality, but how this integration affects soils and crops is not well understood. We conducted two studies to address this. In the first study, we evaluated the impact of cattle (1.3-3.7 head ha-1) grazing an oat (Avena sativa L.) CC on soil and crop yields in two adjacent irrigated no-till corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max L.) fields on silt loam soils in eastern Nebraska. Field I was grazed twice, while Field …

Phenotypic Plasticity Of Diverse Sorghum Varieties In Response To Nitrogen Deficit Stress, Mackenzie Zwiener Apr 2021

Phenotypic Plasticity Of Diverse Sorghum Varieties In Response To Nitrogen Deficit Stress, Mackenzie Zwiener

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The movement of nutrients from old vegetative tissue to young leaves and reproductive organs is known as senescence. Senescence can be influenced by the environment of a plant, such as, drought, heat, and nutrient stress. These environmental stressors can also influence canopy architecture. Crop canopy consists of several traits including: leaf number, angle, length and width. Past research in crops like maize and rice have shown significant influences of more erect leaves, including, the ability for increased planting density, which optimizes light interception and increases yield. In a field trial of a sorghum association panel including 345 different sorghum varieties …

Background: Improving grain yield in cereals especially in wheat is a main objective for plant breeders. One of the main constrains for improving this trait is the G × E interaction (GEI) which affects the performance of wheat genotypes in different environments. Selecting high yielding genotypes that can be used for a target set of environments is needed. Phenotypic selection can be misleading due to the environmental conditions. Incorporating information from phenotypic and genomic analyses can be useful in selecting the higher yielding genotypes for a group of environments. Results: A set of 270 F3:6 wheat genotypes in the …

2021 Standard-Size Triploid Watermelon Variety Evaluation In Indiana, Wenjing Guan, Dan Egel, Dennis Nowaskie, Dean Haseman

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

A total of 6,700 acres of watermelons were planted in Indiana in 2020 with a production value of $46.9 million (USDA 2021). Production in Indiana in 2020 was increased from 6,500 acres and $35.3 million production value in 2019. Primary watermelon type grown in Indiana is standard-sized triploid watermelons. Variety selection based on yield, disease resistance and fruit quality is a key decision in watermelon production. The objective of this study is to provide watermelon producers and seed companies with the updated information on the performance of watermelon varieties grown in Indiana.

Effects Of Using Low Tunnel And Grafted Plants For Watermelon Production Under Low Temperature Stress In Indiana, Wenjing Guan Jan 2021

Effects Of Using Low Tunnel And Grafted Plants For Watermelon Production Under Low Temperature Stress In Indiana, Wenjing Guan

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

This study evaluated the effect of using low tunnel and grafted plants for early-season watermelon production in Indiana. Results of the study indicated that grafted seedless watermelon plants can better tolerate cold stress in the early watermelon season compared to non-grafted seedless watermelon plants. Grafted plants with ‘Camelforce’ rootstock had better old tolerance than that of ‘Carolina Strong Back’ rootstock. The effect of using low tunnels to improve plant survival rate under extreme weather conditions is limited, which depend on temperate stress and cold tolerance of the plants.

2021 Personal-Size Triploid Watermelon Variety Evaluation In Indiana, Wenjing Guan, Dan Egel, Dennis Nowaskie, Dean Haseman

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Personal-size triploid watermelons are usually defined as weighing 4.4 to 8.8 lbs (Vinson et al., 2010). The ideal size is about 6-7 lbs. They open have firm flesh and high lycopene content and attract certain consumers. This variety trial included 12 personal-size triploid watermelons. Yield and fruit quality parameters were evaluated.
