Foreword

Thirty-three years ago I started work in Esperance on broadleaf crops. One of the best things my boss set up for me was arranging visits with several lupin farmers so I could follow their crops from seeding, through the growing season, to harvest. It was a great way to quickly get an idea of the choices farmers make and the reasons why.

With today’s busy lives, most farmers would be hard pressed to have the luxury of visiting many other farmers multiple times to learn how to grow a crop. …

An important domestic and export vegetable industry is located on the sands of the Swan Coastal Plain (SCP) in Western Australia. The total value of the vegetable industry on the SCP was estimated at $90M in 1996/7 or about 50% of the total value of the industry. This vegetable production has been located on good quality sands such as the Spearwood and yellow Karrakatta sands, close to the coast, since the 1950s. However in recent years competition for this land for urban and industrial use has forced vegetable production onto soils with poorer water and phosphorus retention capacity such as …

This report summarises work undertaken to provide ground control for digital terrain models(DTMs) of the Quindabellup and Wambellup sub-catchments. The DTMs will be generated using digital photogrammetry; the ground control was obtained using differential Global Positioning System (D.GPS). Description of Bench Marks (BMs) and summary sheets of Standard Survey Marks (SSMs) located in the general area, were obtained from the Department of Land Administration(DOLA). A ground survey was carried out to confirm the location and condition of BMs and SSMs in the two sub-catchments. Five SSMs were selected as reference points for the D.GPS survey. It is Department of Agriculture policy that regulation is only used when all other approaches to address land degradation have failed. Our thrust is to encourage land holders to move towards using land within its capabilities as they continue to adopt sustainable farming systems. Underlying this approach is a self regulatory philosophy with land conservation district committees playing an important management and coordination role. The Mobrup LCDC has persevered for three years with its efforts to produce a catchment plan. They readily acknowledge that their work is just beginning as they now wrestle with this working plan to form something which will have application on each individual's enterprise to ensure a sustainable future for this catchment.This report is a collation of their ideas, an inventory of works done in the catchment and the best advice which research and local knowledge can provide.

The North Stirling Land Conservation District is located between Katanning and Albany on the northern edge of the Stirling Ranges in south-western Western Australia.It includes parts of the Shires of Cranbrook and Tambellup, covering approximately 100,000ha of the catchment of the North Stirling basin. The basin is a flat area formed on Eocene sediments with poorly defined drainage lines and many salt lakes. It is surrounded by low granite and sandstone hills. The climate is Mediterranean, with cool wet winters and hot dry summers. Average annual rainfall ranges from 375-500 mm per annum. There is very little surface or underground …

The Southern Wheatbelt Region Remnant Vegetation Survey was funded by the Save the Bush program, and aimed at surveying pieces of on-farm remnant vegetation in the "Great Southern" of Western Australia. At the outset a total of 13 shires were selected for survey, namely: Broomehill, Corrigin, Dumbleyung, Katanning, Kent, Kondinin, Kulin, Lake Grace, Narrogin, Tambellup, Wagin, Wickepin, Woodanilling. However, time constraints (available funding indicated a time frame of 40 weeks for the project to be completed) meant that subsequently Kent and Lake Grace shires (two of the largest) had to be dropped from the survey to allow for proper completion …

A computer program called NPDECIDE has been developed by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture to assist with decisions relating to the use of phosphorus fertiliser on cereal crops. NPDECIDE functions by estimating the response of the crop to combinations of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilisers, and by indicating the likely profit from the use of these materials. In order to carry out this task, NPDECIDE must be able to calculate the availability to the growing plants of nitrogen from the fertilisers and from organic material in the soil.

It will require the total cooperation of all members of the Soil Conservation District to remedy the area's problems. The first priority is for the control and better use of water on the recharge areas. The wheat/wheat/lupin rotation at present offers the best economic option. Lupins are well suited to the areas of lighter land. If lupins are planted on waterlogged soils or otherwise unsuitable soils, problems will arise and perhaps prejudice their use on the widespread suitable areas. The use of trees below rocky outcrops is an important measure to prevent excessive recharge of the deeper aquifers. Where trees …

This project began with a requirement to produce a poster display for the Soil Conservation Districts Regional Workshops, in July 1988. A multi-dimensional display was produced at each of three workshops, accompanied by extensive publicity cover. As a result of the success of the displays, it was decided to maximise the exposure possible and tackle the Agricultural Show circuit. The Soil Show then travelled 7900 km, taking in 12 venues involving 16 days of public exposure in 10 weeks. It attracted up to 340 people per hour and won a number of awards. This report deals with the area of responsibility of the Moora District Office of the W.A. Department of Agriculture. The Moora advisory district consists of seven shires which cover 2,811,400 hectares. Agriculture in the advisory district varies according to climate and soil type, Sheep and cattle production are the main enterprises in the high rainfall (coastal) areas. Mixed cereal sheep production is the main system in the medium and low rainfall areas with cereals increasing in importance as annual rainfall diminishes.

The main features in which farming methods and the environment in Israel differ from those in Western Australia, as they appeared to me, are:- the dominant sedimentary and limestone geology with its accompanying soil and moisture conditions population pressure which puts a premium on agricultural productivity and research the widespread use of sprinkler irrigation. These factors interact in various ways so that, although many problems are similar in the two countries (both have many pioneering problems remaining) the approaches to them vary considerably.
