Modernization of traditional small-scale irrigation tanks in India is becoming increasingly popular. This is due to high costs of the alternative, of developing and constructing large-scale projects in rural areas. Examination of management strategies, resource allocation, and collective action has become paramount for promoting food security and livelihoods in water-stressed areas of Southeast Asia. Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing techniques are valuable to assessing the management of these irrigation systems, specifically small water storage reservoirs that capture runoff from the monsoon known as irrigation tanks. Econometric Estimation Of Groundwater Depth Change For The High Plains Aquifer, Jonathan R. Sims

This article presents a new method for estimating changes in depth to groundwater at a yearly, county level and incorporates these estimates as the dependent variable of econometric models for the High Plains aquifer. The High Plains (Ogallala) aquifer underlies eight states in the central United States and is the primary source of irrigation water for this large food producing region. The stock of groundwater is a finite, non-renewable resource with minimal recharge in most areas. This report traces the demand for water in various sectors of the economy of South Dakota. Expected trends in water demand are projected. The conclusions show that from 1960 to 1985 the overall demand for water withdrawals increased at an annual rate of 3.275 percent. The public supplied water for industrial and commercial use sector and the irrigation sector of increased at the highest rates.

South Dakota ranks twentieth in the nation in its irrigated acreage. Depending on how "irrigation" is defined, South Dakota has between 450,000 and 500,000 acres of irriqated land. About 375,000 acres has been developed under State-issued permits by private individuals and groups. An additional 66,450 acres comprise the Belle Fourche and Angostura Federal Irrigation Projects, although in any one year not all of this land is necessarily irrigated. About 52,300 acres of "dry draw, spreader" irrigation involves the intermittent backing up of water behind dams in small creeks for occasional irrigations by farmers and ranchers in the West River Region. …

The economics of dryland versus irrigated crop production in two of South Dakota's ·fast-irrigation-growth counties -- Brookings and Turner are examined in this paper. Special attention is given to the economic impacts on the farm economy of rising energy prices and high interest rates. The analysis is in terms of conditions experienced during the 1981 crop year and projected conditions through 1990.

These projects include both surface and groundwater resources. That some development, whether public or private, will take place seems to be a foregone conclusion. Irrigation development has been and will continue to be a key issue facing the people of the state of South Dakota. As irrigated acreage increases, benefits accrue throughout the State. The irrigator's income earning potential is expanded and income variability is reduced as drought impacts on yields are ameliorated. In addition, a more stable, larger quantity of feed can be produced for livestock production. This may allm-1 for expansion in the livestock industry or less importation of feedstuffs into an area. Scottsbluff Pinto is the name of a new variety of pinto field bean being released this year by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. The new bean variety is a selection from a cross between Great Northern and the common pinto bean. In a bean-breeding program conducted for the past several years by the Department of Plant Pathology, attempts have been made to obtain improved varieties of both field and garden beans for Nebraska. Although the breeding program was primarily concerned with the development of disease-resistant varieties, it was observed that Scottsbluff Pinto, possessing no notable disease resistance, has been outstanding …
