Phytophthora Diseases Of Cutflower Crops, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

Phytophthora root rot is the most common soil borne disease causing plant death in native cut flower production. It is also a pathogen of exotic cutflower crops such as rose, lily, carnation, proteas and gerbera. The fungus, Phytophthora cinnamomi, the cause of jarrah dieback is the pathogen that first comes to mind when Phytophthora is mentioned. This has one of the widest host ranges of all Phytophthora species, particularly amongst native Australia species. P.nicotianae also has a wide host range, infecting a wide range of exotic, as well as Australian native flower crops. There are also a number of …

Nematodes In Western Australian Vineyards, Vivien Vanstone, Neil Lantzke Jan 2006

Nematodes In Western Australian Vineyards, Vivien Vanstone, Neil Lantzke

Bulletins 4000 -

Nematodes are worm-like microscopic animals that live in the soil. There are numerous soil-inhabiting nematode species, but not all are harmful to plants. Some nematodes are plant-parasitic, feeding on and damaging roots, including those of grapevine. Feeding activities of these nematodes reduce the vine’s ability to take up water and nutrients from the soil, leading to lack of vigour, symptoms of nutrient deficiency, wilting, lower yield, vine decline and, in severe cases, vine death. Nematode feeding sites can also lead to entry of other disease-causing organisms (e.g. fungi or bacteria), resulting in rapid vine decline.

Nematodes can survive in the …

A Comparison Of Logging And Fire Disturbance On Biophysical Attributes Of The Northern Jarrah Forest, Alexander W. Watson Jan 2006

A Comparison Of Logging And Fire Disturbance On Biophysical Attributes Of The Northern Jarrah Forest, Alexander W. Watson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Ecologically sustainable forest management (ESFM) serves dual purposes: 1) to ensure the conservation of biodiversity, and 2) in production forest (forest managed for the production of timber and woodchips), to maintain an economically viable timber industry in perpetuity. A central axiom of ESFM is that any manipulation of a forest ecosystem should emulate the `natural' disturbance patterns of the forest. This is based on the assumption that forest communities have evolved with endogenous disturbance regimes and will be better able to cope if exogenous disturbance (e.g., logging) remains within natural levels and spatial and temporal bounds of intensity. The objective …

Increased Demand For Wool Apparel In Western European Markets: Effect On Australian Wool Auctions, Nazrul Islam, John Stanton, Emma Kopke Nov 2005

Increased Demand For Wool Apparel In Western European Markets: Effect On Australian Wool Auctions, Nazrul Islam, John Stanton, Emma Kopke

Agriculture reports

The need for marketing activities in retail markets for wool apparel is a current and reoccurring industry debate. This paper reports on the impact of these activities, as a change of demand for pure wool apparels at retail, on the price and quantity of raw wool cleared through Australian wool auctions. The analysis uses a world wool trade model developed by the Department of Agriculture Western Australian and the University of Western Australia which tracks global flows of wool and wool products from production to retail in 10 regional markets. The impact of demand is presented for selected wool garments …

Production Techniques For Crimson Seedless Table Grapes In Western Australia, Ian Cameron Nov 2005

Production Techniques For Crimson Seedless Table Grapes In Western Australia, Ian Cameron

Viticulture published reports

Crimson Seedless is a late season, red seedless table grape developed by D. Ramming and R. Tarailo in Fresno California for the United States Department of Agriculture. It was bred in 1979 when a white, late ripening seedless hybrid variety was crossed with Red Emperor (see Figure 1). The seedling, which became Crimson Seedless, was selected in 1983 but not released to industry in California until 1989.

Production techniques for Crimson Seedless were largely unknown when the variety was released to industry in Western Australia in 1996. Specific management techniques suitable for Californian conditions had been described by various authors. …

Fisheries Occasional Publication No. 32 - Allocation Of The Western Australian Abalone Resource Between User Groups, Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

In this submission to the Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee (IFAAC), the Department will outline what it believes are the most practical and cost effective ways of managing a system for allocating the abalone resource between the commercial, customary and recreational sectors.

In preparing this submission, it has been noted that because of the limited data on recreational catch outside of the metropolitan area, the Sustainable Harvest Limit (SHL) set for the fishery relates only to the area that is equivalent to Area 7 of the commercial fishery. Further, it is acknowledged that the Minister has approved that proportional catch …

Fisheries Occasional Publication No. 27 - Review Of Pearl Oyster Hatchery Policy - Phase Ii - Policy Direction, Department Of Fisheries, Western Australia Sep 2005

Fisheries Occasional Publication No. 27 - Review Of Pearl Oyster Hatchery Policy - Phase Ii - Policy Direction, Department Of Fisheries, Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

The Australian pearling industry referred to in this document relates to the Pinctada maxima pearl oyster fishery, the overwhelming majority of which operates in Western Australia and Northern Territory.

The key policy focus was to achieve an alternative supply of shell upon which to conduct the pearl culture process and to develop grow-out competence within the Western Australian pearling industry from the use of hatchery bred pearl oyster spat. It was clearly recognised that it was not economically justifiable for all licensees to have their own hatchery operation but it was felt that all licensees should have the ability to …

Management Of The Proposed South Coast Trawl Fishery. A Discussion Paper., Department Of Fisheries. Aug 2005

Management Of The Proposed South Coast Trawl Fishery. A Discussion Paper., Department Of Fisheries.

Fisheries Management Papers

In late 1987, the Minister approved a development plan for the South Coast Inshore Trawl Fishery (Fisheries Management Paper No. 13) and made a number of notices regulating trawling activities in the Recherche Archipelago. Fishing Boat Licences were subsequently ‘endorsed’ by reference to those notices. The development plan was declared to be for a period ending 31 December 1989, subject to extension for a further year if necessary. Despite the considerable interest in the fishery during 1986 to 1989, fishing results demonstrated that the economic returns were marginal and a number of operators withdrew from participation in the fishery (at …

Improving Profit In The Flower Growing Business, Gerry Parlevliet

Agriculture reports

Flower growing is a business. It can be a very profitable business. Just as in any enterprise the success depends very much on the knowledge, skill, tools and business acumen the owner brings to the operation. All small businesses face similar hurdles to achieving success. This bulletin will provide some experiences, tools, suggestions for new flower businesses and for those that …
