Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Estimates of organic carbon (Corg) storage by seagrass meadows which consider inter-habitat variability are essential to understand their potential to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) and derive robust global and regional estimates of blue carbon storage. In this study, we provide baseline estimates of seagrass extent, and soil Corg stocks and accumulation rates from different seagrass habitats at Rottnest Island (in Amphibolis spp., Posidonia spp., Halophila ovalis, and mixed Posidonia/Amphibolis spp. meadows). The Corg stocks in 0.5 m thick seagrass soil deposits, derived from 24 cores, were 5.1 ± 0.7 kg Corg m–2 …

Organic Chemistry Insights For The Exceptional Soil Carbon Storage Of The Seagrass Posidonia Australis, Oscar Serrano, Mohammad Rozaimi, Paul Lavery, Ronald J. Smernik

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The high organic carbon (OC) stores in seagrass meadows have led to their recognition as significant Blue Carbon sinks, though the diagenetic conditions that enable OC retention in seagrass soils remain poorly understood. In this study, seagrass soils were sampled from a Posidonia australis meadow in Oyster Harbour (Albany; south-western Australia) to investigate the preservation of sedimentary OC. We analysed soil characteristics (colour, grain size and redox potential), radiocarbon age, and characterised the soil organic matter (OM) using solid state CP/MAS 13C NMR spectroscopy to examine the preservation of OM down the soil profile. There was minimal change in organic …

Quantifying The Heterogeneity Of The Immunoglobulin G N-Glycome In An Ageing Australian Population: The Busselton Healthy Ageing Study, Alyce Russell Jan 2020

Quantifying The Heterogeneity Of The Immunoglobulin G N-Glycome In An Ageing Australian Population: The Busselton Healthy Ageing Study, Alyce Russell

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The use of immunoglobulin G N-glycomics to study chronic non-communicable disorders and other complex phenotypes emerged following the Human Genome Project. The consortium discovered that most phenotypes were too complex to be explained by genetics alone. Thus, the biological importance of epigenetics was recognised; heritable modifications to gene expression rather than the genome itself. Nglycosylation is a form of epigenetic regulation known as a post-translational modification. It stabilises the immunoglobulin G structure and alters downstream responses elicited by the antibody and is extensively studied as a candidate biomarker in the post-genomic era.

The N-glycosylation of immunoglobulin G itself is complex, …

Tropicalisation Of Temperate Seagrass Meadows In Western Australia: Predicting The Impact Of Tropical Herbivorous Fishes On Temperate Seagrass Meadows, Maria Samsonova Jan 2020

Tropicalisation Of Temperate Seagrass Meadows In Western Australia: Predicting The Impact Of Tropical Herbivorous Fishes On Temperate Seagrass Meadows, Maria Samsonova

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Rising sea temperatures through climate change produce shifts in the distribution of tropical species to temperate regions, a process termed “tropicalisation”. The poleward expansion of tropical herbivores into temperate seagrass meadows is predicted to increase grazing pressure and alter ecosystem services and processes in these seagrass systems. This study attempted to examine the effects of tropicalisation on temperate seagrass meadows along the western coast of Australia, where the increasing abundance of tropical consumers such as the herbivorous Siganus fuscescens has already been documented. Through the assessment of fish assemblages in seagrass meadows and the grazing levels on seagrass in 2001 …

An Investigation Into The Spatial Distribution, Habitat Selection And Resource Usage Of The Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes) Inhabiting Urban Reserves Within Perth, Western Australia, Michael Thomas Main

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

I attempted to track a population of urban foxes in Kings Park, but due to collar failure, only one collar was retrieved. The GPS telemetry data from this fox produced home range estimates for minimum convex polygon (MCP) and kernel density (KD) of 0.302 km² and 0.331 km², respectively. The fox was predominantly active at night, with a ten-fold increase in movement during nocturnal periods when compared to daytime movements. Roads and man-made tracks were important for facilitating movement of the fox through its home range, with almost 97% of location fixes recorded within 100m of these features. The fox …

Analysis Of The Value Of A Ewe In The Wa Sheep Industry, John Young, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Nov 2019

Analysis Of The Value Of A Ewe In The Wa Sheep Industry, John Young, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Animal production and livestock published reports

The WA flock is at a historically low level, however, sheep profitability is at record highs so rebuilding the state flock is an industry priority. Minimising ewe losses is a necessary component of the flock rebuilding. As a result of the feed shortage and possible grain shortage with high prices likely due to demand for grain from the east coast, local farmers may be tempted to underfeed their ewes during the summer/autumn period. Awareness and good information regarding the cost of mis-managing ewe nutrition will help minimize this temptation.

Recovering A Collapsed Abalone Stock Through Translocation. Seafood Crc Project No. 2011/762, Lachlan W.S. Strain, Jamin M. Brown, Anthony M. Hart

Fisheries Research Reports

A Roe’s Abalone (Haliotis roei) fishery in Western Australia (Area 8) suffered catastrophic mortality (99.9%) due to an anomalous environmental event in the summer of 2011. During this extreme marine heatwave there was a sustained period of elevated sea surface temperatures that rose to lethal levels for this species and effectively wiped out an entire stock at its northern distribution. Natural recovery within the foreseeable future was considered unlikely, thus providing a unique opportunity to test fishery restoration strategies for abalone. Over the course of this assisted recovery program (5.5 years) no natural recovery was observed in the region most …

Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia Annual Report 2018/2019, Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

There were four key areas in which the Council focused during the year:

  • the attributes required by a biosecurity 'combat' agency to effectively sustain a biosecurity response
  • funding for biosecurity research and development in WA
  • border biosecurity; and
  • WA's preparedness for myrtle rust

Developing constructive advice to Government requires a comprehensive understanding of the needs and challenges of industry, Government and the community. It also requires an understanding of how changes to the biosecurity system might impact these groups and affect WA's biosecurity status. During 2018/19 the Council continued to monitor biosecurity-related developments at national and State levels; provided feedback …

Development Of An Industry-Based Habitat Mapping/Monitoring System Frdc Project No 2011/021, Simon De Lestang, Matthew B. Pember, Dirk Slawinski

Fisheries Research Reports

Mapping / monitoring in the marine environment can be a very costly exercise. Scientists from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development; Fisheries Division (FD) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have developed a small, low-cost automated camera system that, when fitted to commercial fishing gear, can achieve this at minimal cost. The POTBot (Pictures Of The Bottom) system is a cheap, small “smart” camera that can track its position globally and the date and time, and can record high-definition video and water temperature readings when it determines it has been deployed into the ocean.
