Several changes have occurred in the cattle feeding business which have focused attention on grain processing. The first of these was, the arrival of big feedlots provided an opportunity to use larger and more sophisticated processing equipment at reasonable cost per ton of feed produced. Also, the need to minimize feed separation and digestive disturbances encouraged the use of more sophisticated methods of processing.

During the summer of 1943 reports were received of rotted tubers occurring in fields of early potatoes in central Nebraska. The fact that the tuber rot was present at harvest time and was associated with the early death of the plants rather than occurring as a postharvest disease indicated the presence of a disease factor previously unreported in Nebraska.

The strawberry is more widely grown than any other fruit in Nebraska and is the most valuable of the small fruits. Its total value is greater than that of any of the other fruit crops grown with the exception of apples, cherries, and grapes. It thrives well in all sections where moisture is not too limited and is found almost always in home gardens. It is also produced commercially to some extent, especially near the larger cities in the eastern end of the state.

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The present study was based on records of the dairy herd of the University of Nebraska for the period 1896 to 1934, and covers five breeds, Holsteins, Jerseys, Guernseys, Ayrshires, and milking Shorthorns. In all, 2,090 cows have been included. The purpose was to determine the influence of the age of the bull, the age of the cow, and the season of the year upon the number of services required for conception, and to determine also the influence of these factors upon the sex ratio of calves born, number of twins born, and the percentage of abortion.

It seems especially appropriate at this time to publish a history of the College of Agriculture of the University of Nebraska. The year 1922 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the formal establishment of the college by the Board of Regents, while the year 1924 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the enrollment of the first students in agricultural subjects. It is hoped and intended that this little volume shall preserve for the future much valuable material that would otherwise soon be forgotten.
