Turkish Journal of Zoology

The purpose of this study was to use Microtus guentheri to monitor gamma radioactivity levels in the Mersin region of southern Mediterranean Turkey, where the nation's first nuclear power plant will be built. Prior to our study there was no information available on the radioactivity levels of living organisms in this region. Concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs were determined by gamma spectrometry using a high-purity germanium detector and our results were compared with the associated dose rates in the world. The average value of gamma dose rates obtained in this study (7.59 nGy h-1) was in the range …

Rumen Ciliate Biota Of Water Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis Linnaeus, 1758) In Kastamonu, Turkey, Gözde Gürelli̇

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Species composition and distribution of rumen ciliates were investigated in the rumen contents of six Anatolian water buffaloes living in Kastamonu, Turkey. Thirty-seven species and 19 morphotypes belonging to 11 genera were identified, all being first reports of rumen ciliates from Anatolian water buffaloes. The mean number of ciliates was 70.5 ± 62.3 × 104 cells in 1 mL of rumen contents, while the average number of ciliate species per host was 17.5 ± 3.6. Dasytricha ruminantium, Entodinium simulans, and En. longinucleatum were found to be the dominant species occurring in all animals. Entodinium ellipsoideum, Eudiplodinium dilobum, and Ostracodinium munham …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

To date, 13 species of Ponto-Caspian amphipods have been reported from the inland waters of Turkey. Two, probably overlooked species, Echinogammarus trichiatus and Dikerogammarus villosus, are here recorded for the first time from this country. Due to the atypical morphology, the identity of E. Trichiatus was also verified with molecular methods, based on the mtDNA COI barcode. Both species, along with five other co-occurring Ponto-Caspian amphipods, were collected from Lake Durusu in September 2007. Our finding reveals high diversity of amphipods in this water body. It also presents the southernmost known localities of both species, and expands the checklist of …

Cladonia Trapezuntica (Cladoniaceae, Lichenized Ascomycota): A Robust Morphotype Of Pycnothelia Papillaria, A Taxonomic Study With Conservational Survey, Ayhan Şenkardeşler, Demet Cansaran Duman, Laszlo Lökös, Teuvo Ahti

Turkish Journal of Botany

The long-neglected lichen described as Cladonia trapezuntica was rediscovered at its type locality in Turkey thanks to historical maps available at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Molecular, morphological, and chemical analyses were applied to determine whether C. Trapezuntica is a distinct species or rather falls within the phenotypic variation of Pycnothelia papillaria. Although most of the podetia appear to be unusual for P. Papillaria, the molecular evidence indicates that C. Trapezuntica should be considered as a synonym of P. Papillaria, and the cushion-like growth form, taller podetia with irregular to dichotomously or trichotomously branching pattern, and scarce primary thallus …

Ecological Wood Anatomy Of Fraxinus L. In Turkey (Oleaceae): Intraspecific And Interspecific Variation, Funda Erşen-Bak, Nesi̇me Merev

Turkish Journal of Botany

Wood anatomy features of eight taxa (four species) of the genus Fraxinus L. indigenous to Turkey were examined. Wood samples were collected from different altitudes of their natural growth areas. Study Of Phylogenetic Relationship Of Turkish Species Ofmatthiola (Brassicaceae) Based On Issr Amplification, Beki̇r Doğan, Mustafa Çeli̇k, Murat Ünal, Abdurrahman Sefali, Esra Marti̇n, Ayla Kaya

Turkish Journal of Botany

Matthiola W.T.Aiton is a taxonomically complex genus in which there are many problems, mostly with Matthiola longipetala and M. Odoratissima. Matthiola species native to Turkey were collected from various locations in Anatolia, and their DNA was isolated. Revision studies performed on the basis of molecular data obtained from studies conducted in recent years have made the phylogenetic relationships and systematic positions of the taxa more apparent and reliable. Consequently, the remaining taxonomic problems among the species have been resolved through the use of DNA-based molecular analysis methods, which, unlike phenotype studies, are not affected by environmental factors. The inter-simple sequence …
