Ten New Genera Of Agathidini (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Agathidinae) From Southeast Asia, Michael J. Sharkey, Eric G. Chapman
Entomology Faculty Publications
The Agathidini (Braconidae: Agathidinae) genera of Southeast Asia are revised based on a phylogenetic analysis of COI and 28S. Ten new genera are proposed, i.e., Agathigma, Asperagathis, Chimaeragathis, Cymagathis, Liragathis, Leuroagathis, Scabagathis, Trochantagathis, Xanthagathis, and Zosteragathis. An illustrated key to the Southeast Asian genera of this tribe is presented. Species from Thailand are keyed and described for all genera of Agathidini except Bassus and Zosteragathis which have too many species for this publication and will be dealt with separately. The phylogenetic analyses indicate that Bassus s.s. is polyphyletic. However, there …

Taxonomy is the discipline responsible for charting the world’s organismic diversity, understanding ancestor/descendant relationships, and organizing all species according to a unified taxonomic classification system. Taxonomists document the attributes (characters) of organisms, with emphasis on those can be used to distinguish species from each other. Character information is compiled in the scientific literature as text, tables, and images. The information is presented according to conventions that vary among taxonomic domains; such conventions facilitate comparison among similar species, even when descriptions are published by different authors.
There is considerable uncertainty within the taxonomic community as to how to re-use images that …

Two New Genera Of Songbirds Represent Endemic Radiations From The Shola Sky Islands Of The Western Ghats, India, Sushma Reddy, V. V. Robin, C. K. Vishnudas, Pooja Gupta, Frank E. Rheindt, Daniel M. Hooper, Uma Ramakrishnan
Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
A long-standing view of Indian biodiversity is that while rich in species, there are few endemics or in-situ radiations within the subcontinent. One exception is the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, an isolated mountain range with many endemic species. Understanding the origins of the montane-restricted species is crucial to illuminate both taxonomic and environmental history.

The Family Rhabdoviridae: Mono- And Bipartite Negative-Sense Rna Viruses With Diverse Genome Organization And Common Evolutionary Origins, Ralf G. Dietzgen, Hideki Kondo, Michael M. Goodin, Gael Kurath, Nikos Vasilakis
Plant Pathology Faculty Publications
The family Rhabdoviridae consists of mostly enveloped, bullet-shaped or bacilliform viruses with a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA genome that infect vertebrates, invertebrates or plants. This ecological diversity is reflected by the diversity and complexity of their genomes. Five canonical structural protein genes are conserved in all rhabdoviruses, but may be overprinted, overlapped or interspersed with several novel and diverse accessory genes. This review gives an overview of the characteristics and diversity of rhabdoviruses, their taxonomic classification, replication mechanism, properties of classical rhabdoviruses such as rabies virus and rhabdoviruses with complex genomes, rhabdoviruses infecting aquatic species, and plant rhabdoviruses with both mono- …

Species Delimitation And Description Of Mesocriconema Nebraskense N. Sp. (Nematoda: Criconematidae), A Morphologically Cryptic, Parthenogenetic Species From North American Grasslands, Magdalena Olson, Timothy Harris, Rebecca Higgins, Peter Mullin, Kirsten Powers, Sean Olson, Thomas O. Powers
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Nematode surveys of North American grasslands conducted from 2010 to 2015 frequently recovered a species of criconematid nematode morphologically resembling Mesocriconema curvatum. These specimens were recovered from remnant native prairies in the central tallgrass ecoregion of North America, and not from surrounding agroecosystems. Historical records indicate that M. curvatum is a cosmopolitan species feeding on a wide range of agronomic and native plants. DNA barcoding indicates North American grasslands contain at least 10 phylogenetically distinct lineages of Mesocriconema that resemble, but are not, M. curvatum. Analysis of the two most common lineages reveals two distinctly different population structures. …

Taxonomic Status Of A Newly Described Island Population Of The Smooth Newtlissotriton Vulgaris (Linnaeus, 1758) From Bozcaada (Çanakkale, Turkey), Nurşen Çördük, Çi̇ğdem Gül, Murat Tosunoğlu, Konstantinos Sotiropoulos
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of the recently recorded smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) population from the island of Bozcaada (Çanakkale, Turkey) is clarified on the basis of morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses. The L. vulgaris population from Bozcaada presents body proportions and morphological features of subsp. schmidtlerorum, such as small body length, absence of the tail filament, and dorsal crest with pointed free margin. Similarly, phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences (ND4, 16S rRNA) place the Bozcaada population within Clade E of the recent L. vulgaris phylogeny, which consists of L. v. schmidtlerorum populations.

Komarekiella Atlantica Gen. Et Sp. Nov. (Nostocaceae, Cyanobacteria): A New Subaerial Taxon From The Atlantic Rainforest And Kauai, Hawaii, Jeffrey R. Johansen, Guilherme Scotta Hentschke, Nicole Pietrasiak, Janaina Rigonato, Marli F. Fiore, Célia Leite Sant’Anna
2017 Faculty Bibliography
Six strains of Cyanobacteria sampled in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest and one strain from Kauai, Hawaii, were studied using morphological and molecular approaches, including 16S rRNA gene phylogenies and 16S–23S ITS secondary structures, and are herein described as Komarekilla atlantica gen. et sp. nov.. Morphologically they are similar to Nostoc, Desmonostoc, Halotia, and Mojavia and indistinguishable from Chlorogloeopsis. The parsimony and Bayesian phylogenies of the 16S rDNA show that these strains are close to nostocacean strains, in strongly supported clades and separated from all other genera. The secondary structures of the 16S–23S ITS were very consistent between strains of K. …

Morphological Variation In The Monardella Odoratissima – Monardella Villosa Complex, Monica Estiandan
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In this study, morphological characters were investigated to better characterize the species boundaries between members of the Monardella odoratissima – M. villosa complex (Lamiaeceae). Traditionally, it has been very difficult to identify and separate members of this complex. Monardella linoides, M. purpurea, and M. sheltonii populations are distributed in the overlapping boundaries of these two species (M. odoratissima and M. villosa) and considered within the complex as well. Previous studies and floral manuals have found that the vegetative plant parts from these five Monardella species intergrade with the other taxa in the complex throughout their distribution in California and in …

Ictv Virus Taxonomy Profile: Circoviridae, Mya Breitbart, Eric Delwart, Karyna Rosario, Joaquim Segales, Arvind Varsani
Marine Science Faculty Publications
The family Circoviridae comprises viruses with small, circular, single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) genomes, including the smallest known animal viruses. Members of this family are classified into two genera, Circovirus and Cyclovirus, which are distinguished by the position of the origin of replication relative to the coding regions and the length of the intergenic regions. Within each genus, the species demarcation threshold is 80 % genome-wide nucleotide sequence identity. This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the taxonomy of the Circoviridae, which is available at www.ictv.global/report/circoviridae.

Poa jubata A.Kern. is an ephemeral, southeastern European species of which little is known. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of Poa L., including all previously identified major lineages, shows this species to be isolated, with a genotype here designated as J (plastid) j (nrDNA). It is assigned to the monotypic P. sect. Jubatae sect. nov. The section is differentiated from other Poa sections in having 5-nerved upper glumes, very narrow palea flanges, an annual habit, and erect solitary culms. Poa jubata occurs along coastal regions of the Balkans and is rather rare. Two new collections were made in 2015 in Thrace, …

The Bee Fauna Of The Horse Mountain And Grouse Mountain Region, Humboldt County, California, Carrie Lopez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Recent concerns about the ecological well-being of bee communities in California and elsewhere have increased the need for monitoring programs and studies that evaluate the impact of habitat loss and alteration on bee diversity and abundance. Such studies depend critically on the expertise of people trained in taxonomy, but their numbers have declined in recent years. My primary goal was to gain a comprehensive first-hand experience with bee identification by documenting the fauna of a previously unstudied area in the mountains of northwestern California and by writing an identification key, intended for dedicated non-specialists, to the area’s 35 species of …

An Anthostomella-like taxon was obtained from Pandanus odorifer (Forssk.) Kuntze (Pandanaceae) collected in Krabi Province in Thailand. Morphological data plus phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, RPB2, and β-tubulin sequence data clearly separate this Anthostomella-like taxon from other known genera in Xylariaceae. In this paper, we introduce this taxon as a new genus, Anthostomelloides, in the family Xylariaceae, with A. krabiensis as the type. A detailed morphological description, phylogenetic tree, photomicrographs of A. krabiensis, keys to Anthostomella-like genera, and a comparison of A. krabiensis with the morphologically similar taxa in Xylariaceae are provided.
