There is an increasingly high suspicion of occupational health diseases amongst workers in sawmill factories. Hence this study aimed to determine the microbial diversity in some sawmill factories in Okada, Edo State, Nigeria to evaluate potential implications of the factory’s processing area on the health of the workers and wood merchants. Bacteria and fungi count in the bioaerosols within the processing area of each factory was performed with the passive air sampling technique. Samples of soil, mulch, and the soil/mulch interface zone were collected from commercial highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) fields typical in their use of mulch under Arkansas conditions. Mulches included J-year-old hardwood sawdust, 5-year-old hardwood sawdust, and 1-year-old pine needle mulch. Herbicide adsorption (Kd values) of the samples was determined for diuron, terbacil, and simazine. The soils, mulches, and interfaces adsorbed nearly 10 times as much diuron and more than twice as much simazine as terbacil. Adsorption of the herbicides was three to five times greater to the mulches than to the soils. Adsorption was significantly correlated with the organic …

Cellulose is the most abundant, naturally renewable material on earth. It, and hemicellulose, make up about 70% of the dry weight of shrubs and trees. The cellulose of woody plants, however, is largely unavailable to ruminants because of the highly crystalline nature of the cellulose molecule and the existence of a lignin-carbohydrate complex. If convenient ways can be found to enhance the availability of wood cellulose to enzymatic or microbiological systems, wood residues could provide an additional renewable energy feed supply for a world that can maintain no contingency reserve of feedstuffs.
