First Records Of Megachile Apicalis (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) For Illinois Found In Heavily Urbanized Areas Within The City Of Chicago, Andrea M. Gruver, Paul J. Caradonna Sep 2020

First Records Of Megachile Apicalis (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) For Illinois Found In Heavily Urbanized Areas Within The City Of Chicago, Andrea M. Gruver, Paul J. Caradonna

The Great Lakes Entomologist

We provide the first record of the non-native Megachile apicalis Spinola (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) in Illinois. Thirty Megachile apicalis specimens were collected in the summer of 2018 in a highly urban area of Chicago, IL, USA. Our findings suggest that the range of Megachile apicalis appears to be rapidly expanding across North America, inward from both the East and Western Coasts. Megachile apicalis in Chicago has a broad activity period, can take advantage of abundant non-native floral food resources, and has competitive nesting behavior, all of which may facilitate its successful establishment in disturbed urban environments, as well as its continued …

Ambigolimax valentianus (A. Férussac, 1822), the three-band garden slug, is originally native to the Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal, and the Balearic Islands); however, it has been spread by human activities to many other parts of the world. There is no distributional record of the slug in Turkey to date. The species was recorded for the first time in Turkey during a biological survey carried out in the accommodation area of Dicle University (Diyarbakır) in October 2017. Some of the slugs were transferred to the laboratory for their morphological determination and dissection. Notably, more than 50 species of slugs dwell on …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The colonial ascidian Aplidium tabarquense Ramos-Espla 1991 was recorded in Montenegro during a monitory survey carried out by scuba divers on an underwater outfall of the wastewater discharge system in Traste Bay. Several colonies were present on artificial substrata at a depth of 27 m. This is the first record of the species in the South Adriatic Sea. Further observations are recommended both to delineate the effective distribution and population density of A. tabarquense in the Mediterranean Sea and to widen the knowledge on ascidian diversity along Montenegro's coasts.

Notes On The Nests Of Augochloropsis Metallica Fulgida And Megachile Mucida In Central Michigan (Hymenoptera: Halictidae, Megachilidae), Jason Gibbs

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Notes on the nesting biology of two ground-nesting species are provided from Central Michigan. A single nest of Augochloropsis metallica fulgida was excavated on 12 July 2014 in Shiawassee County. There were two female nest inhabitants. Examination of mandibular wear, wing wear and ovarial development suggests one female was acting as a worker caste. Also, a nesting aggregation of Megachile mucida was observed in Ingham County. Information on nest architecture and cell construction is based on excavations of several nests during 7–15 June 2014. Megachile mucida is recorded as a new host species for the cleptoparasite Coelioxys sodalis. This is …

Resaca Supports Range Expansion Of Invasive Apple Snails (Pomacea Maculata Perry, 1810; Caenogastropoda: Ampullariidae) To The Rio Grande Valley, Texas, Kathryn E. Perez, Victoria Garcia Gamboa, Caitlin M. Schneider, Romi L. Burks

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Resacas, or oxbow lakes, form from old river channels. In the Rio Grande, resacas provide habitat for diverse wildlife, including native and non-native species. Biologists unexpectedly found pink egg masses on emergent vegetation (November 2015) and later adult apple snails (May 2016) within a resaca at a former fish hatchery in Brownsville, Texas. This report extends the non-native range of Pomacea maculata Perry, 1810 by 429 km southeast in Texas. Our findings imply that abandoned waterbodies, such as fish hatcheries, can act as unrecognized conduits for non-native invasive species.
