Cashmere Marketing Is A New Income Source For Central Asian Livestock Farmers, R. H. Behnke, C. Kerven, S. Aryngaziev, N. Malmakov, H. Redden, A. Smailov, K. A. Galvin

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Some indigenous goats in the Central Asian republics of Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan produce good quality cashmere (Millar 1986). International processors have recently been buying this cashmere. (Kerven et al., 2005), but Central Asian producers are not equipped to take full advantage of these new marketing opportunities. The U.S. AID Global Livestock-Collaborative Research Support Program project, "Developing Institutions and capacity for sheep and fiber marketing in Central Asia" is working to increase the income of small-scale livestock farmers through improved cashmere marketing.

Examining Consumer Perceptions And Behaviors Toward Hemp-Based Products, Hannah Lacasse Jan 2021

Examining Consumer Perceptions And Behaviors Toward Hemp-Based Products, Hannah Lacasse

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Although its relevance has ebbed and flowed, hemp production has persisted over several centuries. Over time, its popularity has been interrupted by competing products, public health concerns and regulatory barriers. A renaissance of hemp production has emerged in the U.S., particularly after regulatory barriers fell in 2014 and 2018. This has given rise to a growing market of diverse hemp-based food, medicinal, textile and industrial products. Adding to the political, technological and financial challenges facing this nascent industry is a demonstrated need for consumer behavior research on how products made with hemp-based ingredients are received, if at all, by consumers. …

Consumer Food Socialization In The School And Home, Ashley Deutsch Cermin Jul 2020

Consumer Food Socialization In The School And Home, Ashley Deutsch Cermin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Consumer socialization literature has focused on individual socialization agents and their isolated effects. However, as John (1999) pointed out, children do not grow up in a social vacuum. Instead, the multitude of agents socializing children find their narratives interacting and their effects continually shaped and co-created. To understand how school-age children learn about food, I interrogate the complexity of socialization in three essays.

In the first essay, I take an ethnographic approach to investigate the interactive effect peers and adults, namely service workers, have on children’s food socialization in a public-school lunchroom. By combining a Loseke’s (2007) layered narrative model …

Mongolian Pastoralism–Nomadism And Marketing, Ralph Van Gelder, Nigel Brown, Dorlig Shombodon Apr 2020

Mongolian Pastoralism–Nomadism And Marketing, Ralph Van Gelder, Nigel Brown, Dorlig Shombodon

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Mongolian pastoralism is a treasured “art” and tradition, honoured for its resourcefulness and maintained by the national social and political environment, but in the modern world it is an anachronism. Modern market requirements, enforced by domestic and international consumers, are rendering current Mongolian pastoralism unsustainable. Traditional nomadic herding is a subsistence activity. The products of modern herders are traded in domestic and international markets, hence modern nomadic herding is a profit making activity, in which product specification to satisfy consumers has to be the driver for grazing management and pasture utilisation considerations.

An online marketing strategy resulted in 39% of clients becoming aware of and …

Marketing Toward The Future, Niki Whitley, Susan Schoenian Jan 2020

Marketing Toward The Future, Niki Whitley, Susan Schoenian

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

Abstract

United States goat producers face many challenges with regards to marketing. Although the demand for goat products is increasing, the market is fractured. There is a general lack of infrastructure and many producers do not sell their animals or products for fair or profitable prices. Production costs are too high, and there is a need to improve production efficiency. Imports pose a challenge to US goat producers, as domestic production cannot compete with the availability and lower cost of imports. Government regulations hinder market development because non-commercial slaughter is an important aspect of goat marketing, and regulations keep many …

Spatial Considerations For Implementing Two Direct-To-Consumer Food Models In Two States, Marilyn Sitaker, Jared T. Mcguirt, Weiwei Wang, Jane Kolodinsky, Rebecca A. Seguin

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Faculty Publications

To open new markets, some farmers have adapted direct-to-consumer (DTC) models, such as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), to reach new settings or audiences. We compared sociodemographic and geospatial contexts to farmers' experience with one of two DTC innovations: a cost-offset CSA for low-income families and food boxes distributed through rural convenience stores. We geocoded addresses of thirteen farms and DTC pickup sites in two U.S. states (Vermont and Washington) and calculated road network distances from pickup to supermarket, farmers' market, and farm. We compiled Census block-level demographic and transportation data, and compared it to postseason interviews to explore the effect …

Islands In A Sea Of Aaruul: Globalization And Mongolian Cheesemakers, Pearse Anderson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Despite being a sparsely-populated country with less than 2% of its land arable, Mongolia has developed a rich and complex food culture, notably for its meat and dairy products, which could soon be at an historic high thanks to the tens of millions of animals on Mongolian pastureland. Many Mongolians and non-Mongolians view the countryside as a sea of milk that is currently being underutilized for economic exploitation. Various projects, whether funded and organized by international NGOs, the Mongolian government, or private companies, have tried to use Mongolian’s dairy resources to fill Mongolian demand, with more recent private ventures also …
