Started in Fall 2015, Project OASIS (Optimizing Aquaponic Systems to Improve Sustainability) is an interdisciplinary capstone project with the goal of designing a sustainable and affordable small-scale aquaponic system for use in developing nations to tackle the problems of malnutrition and food insecurity. Aquaponics is a symbiotic relationship between fish and vegetables growing together in a recirculating system. The project’s goals were to minimize energy consumption and construction costs while using universally available materials. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software OpenFOAM was used to create transient and steady-state models of fish tanks to visualize velocity profiles, streamlines, and particle movement. …

The water that is available for beneficial use in Utah is quickly approaching full appropriation; water that has been claimed is nearing the amount that is available for use. The Division of Water Resources of the State of Utah has organized a three-part plan to "Plan, Conserve, Develop and Protect Utah's Water Resources." One of these three elements has a focus to "provide comprehensive water planning." Such planning is best achieved when current and accurate data on the uses of the state's water are available.

This publication describes the most common types of ventilation fans and compares their physical and performance characteristics.

Two general types of ventilation fans are commonly used for agricultural applications. Each type has many different blade diameters, materials, blade shapes, speeds, and motor horsepowers available. The desired airflow rate and the resistance to airflow through the ventilation system, or static pressure capabilities, are the two primary considerations when selecting a ventilation fan. Other considerations include maintenance requirements, noise levels, and energy efficiency.

This NebGuide describes how to use the calculation method to estimate the percent of the soil surface that will be covered with crop residue after using residue-disturbing implements and operations. Leaving crop residue on the soil surface is the easiest and most cost-effective method of reducing soil erosion. Research in Nebraska and other midwestern states found that leaving as little as 20 percent of the soil surface covered with crop residue can reduce soil erosion caused by rainfall and flowing water by one-half compared to residue-free conditions. Greater amounts of residue cover will further reduce erosion.

Heightened concerns for energy and soil conservation have caused producers to reduce the number of secondary tillage operations while trying to maintain satisfactory incorporation of herbicides. Many herbicides are carried into the soil by rainfall or sprinkler irrigation and do not require mechanical incorporation. However, some soil-applied herbicides require mechanical incorporation to reduce volatility and photodecomposition losses. These are Eradicane, Sutan+ and Treflan.
