Oyster setting in Virginia River systems dropped to the lowest level on record during 1972. Spatfall studies indicate this poor condition to be the direct result of the effects of tropical storm Agnes.

Agronomy Notes

Grain sorghum performance tests provide estimates of the relative performance of grain sorghum hybrids in Kentucky. These estimates, hopefully, will aid growers in their selection of a hybrid. The choice of the best grain sorghum hybrid for a given set of crop management conditions and environmental variables is an important step to profitable grain sorghum production. Hybrids should be selected that are well adapted to a given area and have records of high performance.

Grain sorghum performance tests were conducted at three locations in Kentucky in 1972. This report presents the yield and other agronomic data obtained at these locations.

Benthic communities are normally both physically and biologically regulated: However, if an interaction of the physical environment becomes significant, then the community becomes predominantly physically regulated. The arrival of "Hurricane Agnes", presumably causing a considerable reduction in salinity in nearby estuaries, would appear to create a significant physical stress on a benthic community. According to the "theory of environmental stability" (Sanders 1968) , the less stable the environmental parameters - such as salinity, oxygen., and temperature - the fewer species present.
