Odd Bedfellows & Marriage Of Necessity: Public Health And Politics In American Federalism, Gabriella Victoria Chianese Jan 2023

Odd Bedfellows & Marriage Of Necessity: Public Health And Politics In American Federalism, Gabriella Victoria Chianese

Honors Theses and Capstones

In the wake of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, while the public disagrees over mask mandates, required vaccinations, and social distancing, it seems like one common sentiment exists – a distaste for the odd bedfellows of politics and public health. There are those who cry for the compartmentalization of the science of public health and the art of politics to rectify this situation. In the wake of so much confusion and chaos, it is not unjustified to demand the depoliticization of public health; however, this response is unrealistic given the modern political climate, demonstrates a narrow understanding of the …

Predictors Of Summer Chloride Concentrations In Urban Aquatic Ecosystems, Georgianna S. Fischer Jan 2023

Predictors Of Summer Chloride Concentrations In Urban Aquatic Ecosystems, Georgianna S. Fischer

Honors Theses and Capstones

Urban aquatic ecosystems are highly threatened by excess concentrations of chloride (Cl-), which can negatively impact the biodiversity and functioning of aquatic ecosystems. High Cl- concentrations in most northern cities come primarily from road salt use for de-icing, in the form of NaCl. Specific pathways of runoff and hydrology of waterbodies will regulate Cl-concentrations in the months after the snowmelt season. This study attempted to understand the hydrologic controls on Cl- concentrations and identify how the hydrology of urban ecosystems may impact exposure to chloride in streams. To accomplish this, stream sites around the …

The Use Of Diatoms (Amphora Sp.) As Immunostimulant In Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Diet, Ekthida Thongdet Jan 2023

The Use Of Diatoms (Amphora Sp.) As Immunostimulant In Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Diet, Ekthida Thongdet

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Amphora sp. is one of the interesting microalgae due to its rapid growth, high lipid content, ranging from 40-60% of dry biomass, suitability as live food for commercial aquatic animal larvae such as shrimp and abalone. The objective of this study is to evaluate the potential of Amphora sp. isolated from four different locations in the Gulf of Thailand: Sichang Island (ASC), Samae Sarn Island (ASS), Pranburi (APB), and Laem Yai (ALY) as immunostimulant in Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) diet. Four Amphora sp. isolations were cultured and compared productivity. The results showed that ASC and ALY had higher productivity, …

Drones For Large-Scale Wildlife Surveys: Raw Data To Support Manuscript - Hodgson Et Al, Amanda Hodgson Jan 2023

Drones For Large-Scale Wildlife Surveys: Raw Data To Support Manuscript - Hodgson Et Al, Amanda Hodgson

Research Datasets

We conducted trial ScanEagle drone surveys of dugongs in Shark Bay, Western Australia, covering the full extent of the drone’s range (~ 100 km), concurrently with observer surveys, with drone flying above or just behind the piloted aircraft. We aimed to test the assumption that drone imagery could provide comparable detection rates of dugongs to human observers when influenced by same environmental conditions. Data in "All data for analysis - Shark Bay Hodgson et al" include a summary of the sightings from both platforms per transect segment, including associated environmental covariates. Also included are details of each dugong group sighted …
