Analysis Of Spore Shape Determination In Streptomyces, Ning Sun
Analysis Of Spore Shape Determination In Streptomyces, Ning Sun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Streptomycetes are Gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacteria that possess a complex life cycle with the alternation of vegetative mycelium, aerial mycelium, and spores. Streptomyces. coelicolor spore maturation is a complex process that involves spore shape metamorphosis from cylindrical pre-spores into ellipsoid spores, but the details of this process have remained enigmatic. Previously, our lab identified a novel gene ssdA that might play a role in spore shape determination using a transposon-based insertion mutagenesis in S. coelicolor. In this study, I isolated a S. coelicolor ssdA-null mutant that showed increased colony hydrophobicity and misshapen spores in sizes and shapes, confirming the …
Effects Of Scarification, Phytohormones, Stratification, Soil Types And Warming On The Germination And/Or Performance Of Three Tamaulipan Thornscrub Species, Paula Luera
Theses and Dissertations
The Tamaulipan thornforests of south Texas and northeast Mexico are an ecologically and economically important conservation hotspot. Thornforest restoration is limited by native tree and shrub seedling availability for planting. Seedling shortages arise from low seed availability and knowledge gaps regarding best practices for germinating and growing the 70+ thornforest species desired for restoration plantings. To fill key knowledge gaps, we investigated three ecologically important thornforest species with low or highly variable germination or seedling survival rates: Ebenopsis ebano, Cordia boissieri, and Zanthoxylum fagara. For each, we quantified the effects of different dosages of chemical seed treatments …

Journal of Bioresource Management
Seed germination is generally the critical step in seed establishment and thus the determination of successful crop production. This study was focused at examination of the biochemical and germination parameters effected by low water potential which was generated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 and mannitol, related to drought stress and growth of Waha durum wheat genotype. Two tests were carried out in a growth chamber; the first comprises seed germination into Petri dishes in the presence of different concentrations of the two osmoticums (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 % of PEG6000 and mannitol). The second test was carried out …
Suitable Seed Harvesting Time For Six Grass Species, Hossein Arzani, A. Fakhireh
Suitable Seed Harvesting Time For Six Grass Species, Hossein Arzani, A. Fakhireh
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Determination of the best period of seed harvesting was considered. Six grass species were selected. The research was conducted in three stations of Alborz, Sirachal and Homand Absard. According to maturing stages, seed collection for measuring seed water content (moisture content), weight of 1000 seeds and germination percentage has been done. The result showed that there were significant differences between harvesting time on seed germination for all species in all regions. Moisture content, germination rate, weight of 1000 seeds and seed shedding were important characteristics for determination of suitable seed harvesting time.

Species ranges are shifting due to anthropogenic climate change. However, it is unclear how climate variability affects species recruitment, an essential step in range expansion. Recruitment is challenging in drylands, where soil moisture is highly unpredictable. In Southwestern North America, creosotebush (Larrea tridentata) has expanded into Chihuahuan Desert grassland (CDG) dominated by black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda), and black grama is expanding into Great Plains grassland (GPG) dominated by blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis). To evaluate how precipitation variability affects germination and survivorship, we added blue and black grama seeds into a climate variability experiment in GPG in 2019 and 2020 and …

Vertical Metal Distributions In Brownfield Soils Drive Enzyme Activities And Plant Success, Eshariah N. Dyson
Vertical Metal Distributions In Brownfield Soils Drive Enzyme Activities And Plant Success, Eshariah N. Dyson
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The distribution of contaminants in polluted soils can vary through depth. We measured the vertical distributions of heavy metals and enzyme activities in the top 10 cm of side-by-side, vegetated and barren brownfield soils. The data showed metals significantly accumulated in the top 2 cm of barren soil and uniformly distributed through vegetated soil. When planted, germination rate was significantly lower in the previously barren soil, with the metal layer intact, compared to mixed barren soil. These data suggest a feedback loop in which plant roots redistribute metals, diluting metal-rich regions, yet germination remains initially limited by a metal cap. …

In the present study, the effects of elevated zinc concentrations on germination, physiological and biochemical parameters were investigated in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). Results indicate that zinc excess (1–5 mM ZnSO4) did not affect germination process, but it drastically reduced vigor index and radicle elongation, and induced oxidative stress. Exposure of basil plants to 400 and 800 µM Zn decreased aerial parts and roots dry biomass, root length and leaf number. Under these conditions, the reduction of plant growth was associated with the formation of branched and abnormally shaped brown roots. Translocation factor < 1 and bioconcentration factor > 1 was observed for 100 µM Zn …

Low oxygen or hermetic storage has been successfully used to store several commodities such as corn (Zea mays L.), cowpea (Vigna Savi), cocoa (Theobroma cocao), coffee (Coffea L.), and rice (Oryza sativa L.). However, previous research using hermetic storage for peanut or groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) had mixed results. Research was conducted to determine the effect on aflatoxin contamination, seed germination, and oil chemistry of shelled peanut hermetically stored in the Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags for up to 12 months. A 234 factorial study included 1) normal and high oleic peanut, 2) two initial moisture contents by four …
Biodegradable Plastic Degradation Products Alter Germination And Growth Of Aspergillus, Taylor Cofer
Biodegradable Plastic Degradation Products Alter Germination And Growth Of Aspergillus, Taylor Cofer
WWU Graduate School Collection
Although much work has been focused on micro and nano-plastics in soils, the bioactivity of common plastic additives (plasticizers) and monomers have been overlooked. One source of plastic pollution in agricultural soils is breakdown products from plastic soil covers called mulches. The plastics industry is attempting to make biodegradable plastic mulch (BPM) that have reduced environmental impacts and removal costs compared with those typically associated with conventional plastic mulches. Two common polymers added to BPMs are thermoplastic starch (TPS) and poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT). In this study, the effects of components that can leach from TPS and PBAT were investigated to determine …
