BioMedicine

A genome-wide association study (GWAS) can be conducted to systematically analyze the contributions of genetic factors to a wide variety of complex diseases. Nevertheless, existing GWASs have provided highly ethnic specific data. Accordingly, to provide data specific to Taiwan, we established a large-scale genetic database in a single medical institution at the China Medical University Hospital. With current technological limitations, microarray analysis can detect only a limited number of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with a minor allele frequency of >1%. Nevertheless, imputation represents a useful alternative means of expanding data. In this study, we compared four imputation algorithms in terms of …

Methods: This directed qualitative study was conducted in 2019 in Iran. Twenty-three patients with Multiple sclerosis were selected purposefully and interviewed individually. Qualitative content analysis was used for data analysis according to Hsieh and Shannon’s method.

Results: Seventy-six primary codes were detected as well as the following …

Differential Item Functioning Analysis On The Geriatric Depression Scale-15: An Iterative Hybrid Ordinal Logistic Regression, Elahe Allahyari Nov 2021

Differential Item Functioning Analysis On The Geriatric Depression Scale-15: An Iterative Hybrid Ordinal Logistic Regression, Elahe Allahyari

BioMedicine

The elderly population has extensively increased globally, so depression like a common problem in late life may convert to one of the economic, social, and health challenges of the 21st century. Due to the high cost of clinical diagnosis of depression, it is necessary to provide effective questionnaires like the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) for screening. But, the measurement invariance of GDS-15 is still unknown in the general population. In our study, 1473 participants of all Iranʼs ethnic groups were asked to answer GDS-15 and demographic factors such as human settlements, employment, disease, marital status, age, gender, homebound, financial …

BioMedicine

Nowadays, the incidence of obesity is a global challenge and it is estimated that the total number of overweight and obese adults will increase up to 1.35 billion by 2030. Evidence obtained from clinical and experimental studies shows that obesity may be associated with cognitive performance and executive function impairments. Considering various evidence for the poor episodic memory tasks and verbal learning as well as the destruction of cortical gray matter in the obese individuals, here, we collected some causal pathways for contribution of inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and hypertension in the development of brain disorders in obesity. The …

BioMedicine

Background: Breast cancer is a typical malignancy and the most common in the female and it is the primary reason behind cancer-related deaths of women around the world. The pathological role of the non-enzymatic change of proteins by reducing sugars become frequently shows in different kinds of cancer. Cancer cells generally rely upon aerobic glycolysis as the main source of energy. Impaired glucose metabolism is somewhat responsible for the aggregation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Methylglyoxal (MG), a glycolysis byproduct either contributes to the accumulation of AGEs. Enzymatic defense upon AGEs products exists in all mammalian cells. Aims: …

Comparison Between C4d Immunohistochemical Staining And Other Clinical- Hisopathological Findings In Iga Nephropathy, Hossein Samadi Kafil, Hamed Sharifi

BioMedicine

Introduction: IgAN occurs following abnormal IgA deposition in the glomerular mesangial regions. It is the most common primary glomerular disease and one of the causes of CKD-KRT, so it is necessary to identify clinical and histopathological findings that predict progression to CKD-KRT. In the physiopathology of this disease, C4d causes serious renal injuries and should be counted as a significant prognostic factor too. This study examined C4d biomarker and compare it with findings affecting prognosis, to determine the predictive value of the C4d in progression to CKD-KRT in IgAN.

Materials and methods: In this …

BioMedicine

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the complications in diabetes mellitus (DM) which caused by microvascular damage in the retina due to long term metabolic changes in diabetes. To date, there has been much research targeted on the determinant of genetic identification in DR patients. In DR, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) gene is accountable for breaking down the blood-retinal barrier and implicated in the role of neovascularization. It is thought that the polymorphism of VEGF -2578C/A (rs699947) contributed to the development of diabetic retinopathy in type 2 DM.

Aim: To determine whether the polymorphisms of VEGF-2578C/A are the …

Hormones Can Influence Drug Addiction-A Narrative Review, Morteza Karimian, Hamidreza Famitafreshi

BioMedicine

Drug addiction is a dangerous condition that is the concern of human societies. Nevertheless, several issues exist ahead of people with a drug use disorder during addiction. Accordingly, various types of studies have been conducted to understand better the problems that people with a drug use disorder encountered. People with a drug use disorder usually have a problem tolerating the withdrawal period and some relapse to drug abuse. Complementary studies further revealed that some hormones like oxytocin (OXT), vasopressin, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) axis hormones, sex hormones, thyroid hormones, and nutritional hormones are probably involved in addiction processes. These hormones completely …

Combined Posterior And Anterior Approaches For Cervical Intradural Disc Herniation: A Case Report, Yu-Hsiang Lin Feb 2021

Combined Posterior And Anterior Approaches For Cervical Intradural Disc Herniation: A Case Report, Yu-Hsiang Lin

BioMedicine

Intradural disc herniation (IDH) is an extremely rare condition. The authors report the case of a 53-year-old female who had neck and right shoulder pain associated with right-sided hemiparesis and hyperesthesia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine (C-spine) revealed central mass-like lesions that caused the compression of the right side of the spinal cord. The posterior surgical approach was used to remove two pieces of IDH. After surgery, the muscle strength in the right upper limb improved from Grade 0/5 to 4+/5 without surgery-related complications. Although there are some reports in literature on the radiologic features of cervical …

Contralateral Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Palsy In Revision Anterior Cervical Discectomy And Fusion (Acdf): A Cautionary Tale, Chenghan Wu, Eugene Wei Ren Yang, Kelvin Kah Ho Lor Feb 2021

Contralateral Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Palsy In Revision Anterior Cervical Discectomy And Fusion (Acdf): A Cautionary Tale, Chenghan Wu, Eugene Wei Ren Yang, Kelvin Kah Ho Lor

BioMedicine

Revision anterior cervical spine surgery has a higher risk of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP). We describe a unique case of an isolated RLNP contralateral to the side of the surgical approach in a patient who underwent revision anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for cervical myelopathy, and in whom pre-operative laryngoscopic evaluation had excluded a pre-existing occult RLNP. Scarring around the recurrent laryngeal nerve at the previous surgical site may have rendered it less mobile, resulting in it being more susceptible to compression from an inflated endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff or traction from surgical retractors. This case illustrates that …
